Round Table is internationally a friendship organization,

founded in Norwich, England by Louis Marchesi, then a

Rotarian in 1927. From a small group of 8 members, to-

day it has grown to 43,000 members across 52 countries

representing every corner of the world. Round Table

came to India in 1957 with the formation of Madras

Round Table No 1 on November 14th 1962 by John Barton

with 100 members. Over the past five decades it has

grown to become a 3,350 member strong association.

From the day of its inception, Round Table has been a

non-religious, non-political and non-sectarian organiza-

tion offering its members the best opportunity to connect

with each other, have fun whilst giving something back to

their community.

Round Table India has around 200 Tables located in 76

cities and towns, comprising of businessmen, entrepre-

neurs, technocrats and professionals, men who can rise

above personal concerns to seek and serve the larger

needs of the community.

About Round Table India

Even after 67 years of independence, Millions of Indian

children have never, ever been to school. Illiteracy is a

self-fulfilling curse that perpetuates the chain of poverty,

degradation and child labor. To reach out to this group of

underprivileged children, since the year 1996, RTI across

the country started adopting projects aimed at providing

quality school infrastructure, and then in 1998 this project

was formalized and thus born the National Project of

Round Table India “Freedom Through Education” - In

pursuit of educating underprivileged children”

Round Table India’s focus on Infrastructure-Building is

aimed at promoting Education for Posterity and hence

RTI has put in colossal efforts to build FTE School

Blocks across the nation.

Why Education??? “Education is

the most

powerful

weapon

which you

can use to

change the

world…”

About Round

Why Education???

Less than half of India's children between the age 6 and 14 go to school.

A little over one-third of all children who enroll in grade one reach grade

eight.

At least 35 million children aged 6 - 14 years do not attend school.

53% of girls in the age group of 5 to 9 years are illiterate.

In India, only 53% of habitation has a primary school.

In India, only 20% of habitation has a secondary school.

On an average an upper primary school is 3 km away in 22% of areas under

habitations.

In nearly 60% of schools, there are less than two teachers to teach Classes I

to V.

On an average, there are less than three teachers per primary school. They

have to manage classes from I to V every day.

High cost of private education and need to work to support their families and

little interest in studies are the reasons given by 3 in every four drop-outs as

the reason they leave.

Dropout rates increase alarmingly in class III to V, its 50% for boys, 58% for

girls.

In nearly 60% of schools, there are less than two teachers to teach Classes I

to V.

1 in 40, primary school in India is conducted in open spaces or tents.

In Andhra Pradesh (South India), 52 upper primary schools were operating

without a building in 2002, while in 1993, there were none.

In Maharashtra (West India), there were 10 schools operating without a build-

ing in 1993, this has climbed to 33 in 2002.

More than 50 per cent of girls fail to enroll in school; those that do are likely

to drop out by the age of 12.

Facts about Education in India

We believe

education is most

important as it

enables a child to

realize his or her

full potential; to

think, question

and judge

independently;

develop sense of

self-respect,

dignity and self-

confidence.

About Round

Why Education???

This movement will impact 5.1 Million children for the schools built till

June 2013

Almost one classroom has been constructed in the last 15 years

The phenomenon has been working across India and Round Table India

amongst the only “Zero Overhead” organization where every penny in the

project account is used only for projects.

Close to 1700 schools have been constructed

Close to 4650 Classrooms have been constructed

Close to 125 Crore Rupees is the fund that has been used in the construc-

tion of schools and playgrounds

RT India has gained an in-depth experience of handling FTE projects and

a well laid out Guidelines for construction is issued to all tables when a pro-

ject is been sanctioned.

Once a project is granted and as it progresses, a strict check is required to

ensure that all norms and procedures are followed.

A State-of-the-Art Secretariat in Chennai, doing the required follow-up

for first level of compliance and maintaining Archives & Documentation relat-

ed to the projects, enables the smooth functioning of the Administration.
