Appendix 2 - Notes and References [1] Mission in OneFPT, version 4 for BSC training 14 April 2013
[2] The content in this section are accumulated from communications with CTOs of FPT subsidiaries,
in October 2013
[3] In the context of FO, Mobility means content distribution, advertisement, collaboration on Mobile
[4] In the context of FTEL, Mobility means content distribution on Mobile
[5] CDN: Content Distribution Network
[6] In the context of FSO, Mobility means mobilization (moving from traditional tools to mobile tools)
in vertical domains (retail, transport, banking …)
[7] Examples for Smart System in context of FSO are: sale routing with GIS applications, sale data
analytics, voice interface in cloud and mobile services …
[8] Packaging existing solution of FIS in vertical domains (telecom, banking …)
[9] OSM: Open Street Map
[10] Examples for Digital platform for distribution in context of FTG are: claim management system,
real-time integration of distribution modules, store / warehouse management
[11] Demo labs are labs with equipment and solutions provided by partners to show for customer
and for FPT’s experiment
[12] Computer provided to schools need to be preloaded with English teaching software, customized
for Vietnam foreign language program
[13] Mainly based on ITR2012 (Infocomm Technology Roadmap 2012) of Singapore Infocomm
Agency, http://www.ida.gov.sg/Infocomm-Landscape/Technology/Technology-Roadmap, retrieved in
2013, and Gartner's Hype Cycle 2013 (Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, 9 August 2013). Italic
and bold font is given to technologies mentioned by Hype Cycle 2013 but not by ITR2012. Italic font is
given to selected technologies only mentioned by detailed Hype Cycles: telecom 2012, enterprise
architect 2012, mobile app 2012, BI 2012, device 2011-12, context-aware 2012, e-commerce 2012,
HCI 2012, smart city 2012, advertising 2012, education 2012
[14] The references models is presented independently with timeline, does not contain the content
of R&D, and are only relevant for providing general framework to organize R&D activities
[15] Cannon divides R&D into topics http://www.canon.com/technology/approach/
[16] Samsung outlines R&D in three layers. The Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT),
Samsung's technology competitiveness in core business areas, identifies growth engines for the
future, and oversees the securing and management of technology. The R&D centres of each business
focus on technology that is expected to deliver the most promising long-term results. Division
product development teams are responsible for commercialising products scheduled to hit the
market within one or two years.
http://www.samsung.com/in/aboutsamsung/ourbusinesses/researchdevelopment.html, retrieved in
2013. In FPT, R&D in FPT HO will be similarly R-focused, while subsidiaries’ R&D are D-focused. FPT
HO leads and coordinates its projects, while FPT subsidiaries may contribute rotating human
resources. In this way, R&D human resources in FPT Subsidiaries will gain “flying hour” and cross-
subsidiary cultures.
[17] Azuhata, S. (2011). Hitachi Establishes New R&D Framework to Spur Global Growth of the Social
Innovation Business. http://www.hitachi.com/New/cnews/110117d_pre.pdf, retrieved in 2013
[18] For each topic, the darker (upper) arrows show the research problems, and the lighter (lower)
arrows show applications in FPT business that are related to the research problems above them. The
research problems and business applications are chosen from the taxonomy in Appendix 1. In
Appendix 1, the business problems are either derived from Subsidiaries’ View (normal print) or from
Trend (italic print). Not all the business and research problems in Appendix 1, are included in the
Roadmap; only the most "sensible" and "doable" ones will be in the Roadmap. Sensible aspect is
measured by Sensibility, which is the number of potential applications in FPT subsidiaries, reflected
by the number of links from the R&D problems to business applications. Doable aspect is measured
by Doability, which is estimated on the scale of 10, with higher mark corresponding to the maturity
of technology (bold one has Doability greater than 5) and the human resource availability for FPT.
Among the selected business and research problems for the Roadmap, the ones with higher
Sensibility and Doability will generally be tackled before others in chronological order.
[19] The topic "Large Scale System" focuses on Engineering in setting up the infrastructures and
incorporating Scientific tools onto these infrastructures; while the "AI & Data Mining" focuses on
Scientific tool developments and "Human Machine Interface" or "Human Machine Interaction" (HMI)
deals also with some AI tools for explicitly interfacing with human. The topics cover most of
technologies interested by FPT subsidiaries, and are in accordance with FSOFT CTO's advices.
[20] This problem has Sensibility of 7 (serving 12 potential applications in FPT subsidiaries) and
Doability of 8/10 (estimated on the scale of 10, based on the technology maturity, in this case the
technology is matured with available reference architectures, and available human resource, in this
case 1 potential Ph.D. + engineers with some experiences from FPT HO & subs). This cover all Cloud
engineering (IaaS, PaaS - OpenStack/CloudStack, SaaS, ...) as well as BigData (MapReduce by Hadoop,
HDFS, Mahout, BigR, Data Visualization) on top of the Cloud. This infrastructure not only serves as
reference architectures for applications of Cloud in FTEL (IaaS), FSO (PaaS), FIS (SaaS), ... but also
serves for other BigData, AI & DataMining research projects within FPT HO & FTRI.
[21] This problem has Sensibility of 5 and Doability of 5/10. One possible way is to partner with
named player (e.g. Symantec) to set-up demo-lab of Cloud Security at FPT and adopt the security
standards of these demo labs to Cloud projects of FPT. Although not shown in the Roadmap, demo
lab can be setup by collaboration with FTG and FSOFT and will contribute to business applications in
FTG (FTG demo lab for cloud/bigdata) and FSOFT. ITR2012 estimate the cloud security standard
technology will be mature by 2015 to 2017. See more details at section 5.5.2.6 of

[23] FSOFT PaaS has already started; collaboration between Cloud for BigData and FSOFT PaaS will be
implemented by rotating human resources between projects and re-use of architecture and methods.
FSOFT might also be interested in IaaS, SaaS. Effort with FTG demo lab in Cloud security will
contribute to FSOFT PaaS in later phase.
[24] Collaboration between Cloud for BigData and FTEL IaaS will be implemented by rotating human
resources between projects and re-use of architecture and methods. Effort with FTG demo lab in
Cloud security will contribute to FTEL IaaS. And afterward, software defined network result will also
be applied to FTEL IaaS.
[25] SaaS of FIS is for SME (small & medium enterprises) and the solution for SME may be packed
with additional Mobility elements (with some solutions to be developed in other research topics).
Collaboration between Cloud for BigData and FIS SaaS will be implemented by rotating human
resources between projects and re-use of architecture and methods.
[26] Collaboration between Cloud for BigData and FE MOOC will be implemented by rotating human
resources between projects and re-use of architecture and methods.
[27] This problem has Sensibility of 6 and Doability of 8/10.
[28] This problem has Sensibility of 6 and Doability of 6/10. Due to the ever-increasing stream data,
stream data might only be feasibly processed/preprocessed in-mermory. See page 9 of
