The convergence of the digital world with our physical world has the potential to transform our lives. By starting to combine data with individual knowledge we can drive new sustainable growth through what we call the Human Centric Intelligent Society.

Education can lead the way.

Just as the printing press enabled new and greater forms of learning, so technology and the internet is doing the same for this and future generations – inspiring and enhancing opportunities to gain knowledge.

The challenge for educational providers is how to combine technology with teaching to the advantage of students, propelling them forward onto the next stage of life.

Ensuring that educational providers have the infrastructure they need is an absolute priority. Without it, there is a risk of failing to meet targets as educational standards shift.

Fujitsu bring years of experience in education sectors around the world. Our real-world innovations are backed by well-funded research and development to ensure that the best technology is available to classrooms.

With the pressure on to balance student demands with restricted budgets, educational establishments need to invest wisely for long-term success. Fujitsu provides the solution with quality, intuitive products that are both accessible and affordable.

The infiltration of technology in learning affects every department. As a result, there is growing pressure on teachers, lecturers and IT departments to be well versed in IT troubleshooting. This detracts vital time and energy from teaching and for more productive initiatives. Fujitsu offers optimal technology for every educational environment that is both easy to use and easy to manage.

Allowing for innovation amongst teachers and students, many of whom come with existing IT skills, requires an IT infrastructure primed for growth. That is why Fujitsu solutions for Education build in the flexibility and scalability organisations require when needs change.

As students, staff and IT departments explore this new era of learning, Fujitsu is by their side – powering progressive education.

Helping children to take the first stepBy the time children enter school many are already familiar with technology, giving teachers a platform of knowledge on which to build. Crucially, Key Stages 1 and 2 offer an opportunity to consolidate basic skills so that children can progress further.

The question is whether schools are ready to do so. Infant and Junior schools that have the technology to enhance learning are setting the benchmark, both in terms of actual achievement and parental or governmental recognition.

There is an expectation on schools that children will have access to a wide range of the technology to facilitate learning and to prepare them for life. Fujitsu is helping to make the technology journey a reality, even at a time when budgets are being reduced. Quality tablets and laptops provide flexible solutions that can be shared across classrooms.

For teachers the challenge is often ensuring that 30 or so class computers work simultaneously. Technology can make learning more personalised and allow children to work at their own pace. Assessing children can be done instantly without the child even being aware of it. Fujitsu also recognises the concern that teachers see their roles moving from teaching to IT management. Our technology solutions help educational establishments overcome both obstacles.

Our commitment is to developing durable designs that work, are accessible to young people and give teachers the end-to-end support they need to deal with everyday challenges.

Becoming the university of choiceIn a world of fee funding, universities must compete for the brightest and best students. Offering students and staff access to High Performance Computing is just one example of how an institution can attract the right people through technology. This has seen IT become one of the most critical differentiating factors between institutions.

With the growth of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) new decisions have to be made. Although the choice of what devices to offer students on-site remains important, it is investment in Back Office infrastructure that can have the most significant impact. Students now value the ability to work anywhere at any time so those institutions that can adapt technology to suit these new requirements will be the ones that benefit.

Flexible IT has become the cornerstone of independent learning and this is where the solution lies. As tablets and other portable devices become the norm and students bring their own devices into buildings, the focus is placed firmly on network connectivity, the speed of applications and access to storage.

Recognising the importance of designing IT solutions not just for an entire institution but also for individual departments, Fujitsu can tailor IT infrastructure to meet different requirements. As the partner of choice for High Performance Computing, Fujitsu can provide research departments with a faster way to process, analyse and make use of vast quantities of data. We also recognise the need to work within strict financial plans. That is why we design powerful IT infrastructure that is within the budgets of universities and Higher Education institutions.

Higher Education & Universities

VirtualisationWith data storage increasing by up to 180% per organisation each year, flexible options are required. vShape from Fujitsu provides the answer.

Delivering complete virtualisation-in-a-box, vShape provides the performance, security and, most importantly, the scalability to expand IT resources in line with staff and student needs. As BYOD and the expansion of data gather pace within the Higher Education sector, faster storage and retrieval over quicker networks also hold the key to success in developing new ideas and academic research.

END USER DEVICESFor the device investments you do make, high spec technology is required to meet the demands of professional-level students and research staff. In the past, this computing capacity would have been out of reach to all but a limited number of Higher Education institutions. With affordable High Performance Computing options from Fujitsu this is no longer the case.

Our CELSIUS workstations combine cutting edge processing power with trouble-free usability for a professional solution to university requirements. The ultra high spec CELSIUS R930 workstation provides unsurpassed performance, particularly suited to fields once restricted to supercomputers, such as scientific research, simulation, visualisation and virtual reality. Enterprise grade applications run smoothly while tool-less expansion and individual configurations provide greater flexibility – particularly if desktops are pooled in shared computer rooms.

The Warren School

The Warren School was striving to improve performance and exam results. But teaching staff and students were being restricted by its existing, unreliable ICT system. So they chose Fujitsu to deliver an innovative and affordable ICT solution that would help it achieve its goals.

The challenge The Warren School in Essex is a mixed community comprehensive for 11 to 18 year olds. With almost 1,300 pupils it is slightly larger than average, and was striving to improve its performance and the GCSE and A-Level results of its pupils. It also sought to be a beacon of opportunity in the local community.

But the ambitions of its teaching staff and students alike were being thwarted by an old and unreliable ICT system. Like many schools, there was also a shortage of internal ICT resource and expertise and the all-too-familiar story of tight budgets.

Recognising these limitations, the school realised they needed to establish a partnership with a company that not only had the right technology at the right price, but could also help them realise their vision. This is when they engaged with Fujitsu.

The solution Fujitsu recommended two new PRIMERGY servers that would enable the school to transition from physical desktop computers to easily managed virtual desktops, providing a more flexible and future-proof way to manage ICT in the classroom.

In addition to this server replacement, the school selected the Fujitsu vShape 25 high-availability package, optimised to deliver up to 25 virtual machines (VMs). Using VMs enables the school to effectively move computers and resources around the school at the click of a button. Applications usually limited to computers in particular departments – such as an art and design package or a piece of maths software – can be delivered instantly to anywhere in the school, providing a more flexible use of classrooms.

Fujitsu vShape has also enabled The Warren School to offer staff and students remote access to files and applications. This will radically improve the way in which the students complete and submit homework. In the medium term vShape will also enable staff and students to bring their own devices (BYOD), such as tablets and laptops, to school and safely and securely connect to the network.

In summary

■ An agile solution moves high-performance ICT resources to where teachers and pupils need it

■ Reduced energy costs and more efficient use of support staff■ Motivated and engaged teachers and students, using the latest educational tools■ Flexible infrastructure enables further developments such as Bring Your Own Device

» We’re not only improving the way we work and teach but by enabling our staff and students to take advantage of the latest teaching resources, lessons are more stimulating and interactive and pupils are so much more motivated as a result.«

Andrew Szymanski, Network Manager, The Warren School

University Campus Suffolk

Faced with greatly reduced space in its new data centre, combined with aging legacy servers, University Campus Suffolk chose Fujitsu to implement a virtualised server environment.

The challenge Founded in 2007 University Campus Suffolk (UCS) is a new kind of higher education institution. It allows students to access the knowledge and resources of its two validating universities, the University of East Anglia and the University of Essex, as well as local colleges and the wider community.

Student numbers have continued to grow rapidly to almost 4,500 full-time students in 2011/12. But UCS’s VISION 2020 projects further growth in student numbers to more than 10,000. These plans have meant that existing services have had to be examined, and if necessary rebuilt to handle this growth challenge. At the same time, UCS faced greatly reduced space in its new data centre, combined with aging legacy servers. These factors led it to explore if a virtualised server environment could be the solution.

The solution Virtualisation was at the top of their agenda as it provides the ability to scale without needing a large footprint. It also makes maintenance a lot faster and simpler. The key for UCS was finding the right partner.

UCS looked specifically at Fujitsu’s new vShape solution and completely took it apart to test each separate component in detail. It soon became clear that it was robust and flexible enough to act as the foundation of a new virtualised server platform.

The Fujitsu vShape 100 package enables the rapid deployment of applications and allocation of resources at the click of a button. Virtual machine applications and workloads can be moved to other virtual servers in the solution. This keeps applications running while removing the need for planned downtime.

The new platform hosts the full range of services that a typical higher education institution offers, including student information, library, finance and research systems. And with UCS well on its way to complete virtualisation, it’s able to plan for other innovations. These include a paperless application system, which will bring UCS in line with UCAS requirements.

In summary

■ The vShape solution costs about 30% of the cost of a like-for-like physical hardware replacement

■ Power consumption is reduced by 80% – saving money and reducing UCS’s carbon footprint

■ Easier maintenance will minimise the burden on the ICT support staff and free time to focus on more strategic objectives

■ vShape brings best-in-class vendors together in one package but Fujitsu remains a single point of contact, making support transparent and effective

■ A subsequent phase of the project will reduce disaster recovery time to a matter of hours rather than the week it currently takes

Case Studies

» Virtualising our server environment with vShape is the beginning of a strategic partnership with Fujitsu which we are confident will last long in to the future and will produce more innovations that reduce costs, increase performance and deliver better schools.«

Peter O’Rourke, Director ICT services, University Campus Suffolk
