Suddenly you may find the price has increased, or they have disappeared without finishing, or even starting, the work.

They may even pretend that they are working on your neighbour’s property and need access to yours to check a leak, or something similar. Once in your property they will spot something that needs urgent attention, and offer to fix it.

Please be vigilant, support your neighbours by keeping an eye on their property and remember you do not have to open the door or have to buy these products or services, or even let them in. AllotmentsStafford and Rural Homes are currently completing the legal paperwork required to tie up the final stages for the proposed allotments on Hilderstone Road, however the Council hopes to be in a position to let the first allotments very soon.

Dog FoulingThe Parish Council continues to receive numerous complaints of dog fouling across the parish. Please be aware it is illegal to leave your dog’s poo lying in a public area.

If the dog is in your care you must clean up any mess it makes. Being unaware that the dog has fouled, or not having anything with which to clean up the mess, is not an excuse.

Uttoxeter RoadThe blocked road drains by the junction with Adamthwaite Drive have again been reported to the County Council.

Stallington Road The County Council are proposing to make Cavell Court a one way system – the Parish Council considered there were more pressing issues along the Stallington Road.Speeding is still causing problems on the lane. Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership in collaboration with the police and County Council are monitoring the road so if you don’t want an unpleasant surprise coming through your letter box, please slow down.Heavy goods vehicles are still using Stallington Road as a short cut to get to Hilderstone Road, perhaps the only way to stop this will be for residents to report them to the Highways Dept 0300 111 8000 giving reg No and name on the vehicle. Springcroft SchoolJust before Christmas, Reception and Key Stage 1 performed this year’s Nativity, Babushka. It was truly amazing, the children looked ‘fab-u-lous’ in their costumes and it was a sheer joy to see them perform. The KS2 ‘Christmas Celebration in the Round’

was very moving and it was splendid to welcome so many parents into school. Year 2 also visited a local Nursing Home to perform songs from the Nativity and recalled the Christmas story for the residents. A very successful Christmas Fair was organised by our Springcroft Fundraisers which was really well supported by our local community. Since Christmas, we’ve had friends from Flash Ley Primary School in Stafford visit us to share our Goblin Engineering project, Year 3 have visited Derby Museum to further learn about Ancient Egypt, the whole of Key Stage 2 has visited the New Vic Theatre and seen their production of ‘The Wind in the Willows’, Year 6 have visited the Think Tank Museum in Birmingham, Year 1 have visited Gladstone Museum, Romeo & Juliet has been performed in school by a travelling Shakespeare Company, Year 5 parents have joined us for lunch, various parental workshops have taken place and our Fundraisers organised a Race Night which was great fun and raised further funds to support our children’s experiences here at Springcroft. Year 5 had an amazing week at Laches Wood Outdoor Education Centre the week before half term and Year 2 have

recently returned from a 3 day residential at Stanley Head Outdoor Education Centre. I was lucky enough to spend some time with both classes and they were great fun to be with. Both Laches Wood and Stanley Head staff made a point of praising our children. Their behaviour and positive attitude to exploring new experiences and challenges was a credit to themselves, their family and Springcroft.

Our very talented children have represented Springcroft in numerous sporting events. In the Cluster Kwik Cricket Tournament at Fenton Manor we finished second overall. Springcroft won the Cluster Handball competition at Blythe Bridge High School, and we look forward to finishing the term off by competing in the National Schools Dance Competition, the Blythe Bridge Cluster Year 2 Multi-skills and both the Blythe Bridge Cluster and Cheadle and District Schools Sport Association Football competitions for both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. We have had new windows and doors installed in Year 1, the fascia boards replaced around the whole school, and various plumbing, electrical and decorating work undertaken to ensure our children’s learning takes place in a comfortable and pleasant environment.

A special thank you to Mr Owen, our site supervisor, who I am sure you will agree, works very hard and always ensures that our school is safe and clean to learn in. Thank you Sir!

Have a wonderful Easter, and I look forward to updating everyone on life at Springcroft in the Summer.

Fulford Ward NewsWar MemorialAs in many villages around the country, Fulford’s War Memorial is situated in the parish Churchyard, the logical, respectful and peaceful place to honour the Fallen of the two World Wars to whom we owe so much. Although situated in the churchyard, the war memorial was originally funded after World War I through monies raised by public subscription.

The memorial column was cracked and leaning and has had to be completely dismantled, the three octagonal bases hoisted off, such that a new reinforced concrete foundation could be created. Funding for its current restoration has come from the Parish Council, the Local Staffordshire County Councillor’s Community Fund and also from Dilhorne Church’s annual tithe - but a further £2,500 was needed and to this end, requests for donations for the restoration were distributed around the village.

The scale and speed of the village’s response to the appeal was amazing and in a little over two weeks in December a combination of donations and fundraising had smashed through the target of £2,500 with the Fulford Village Group able to contribute to the renovation and maintenance of the village

war memorial. The rebuild and cleaning was completed in March.

Baulk Lane / Vicarage LaneCar drivers should be aware that this is an “Access Only” road – it has been noted that drivers are using it as a through route, and at inappropriate speeds. The police should be informed of any offending vehicle such that they can take action. This lane is also the worst area abused in terms of dog mess.

Tree Preservation Order (TPO)A Tree Preservation Order is an order made by a local planning authority to protect specific trees, groups of trees or woodlands in the interests of amenity.

A TPO makes the felling, lopping, wilful damage or destruction to trees (including root damage), without the written permission of this authority, a criminal offence.Stafford Borough Council has made a TPO in respect of the trees situated on Fulford Road between Highview Road and Long Lane.

BKVFulford have again entered the ‘Best Kept Village’ competition with residents encouraged to “look after their patch”. Together with group efforts around the village,

on the Village Green and the church car park, every effort is being made to be ready for the judges’ visits in May, June and July. Having gained third place last year, hopes are high that even better can be achieved in 2019 with all the effort that has been made around the village.

The hundred year old oak tree on Fulford Village Green reported as diseased by the Stafford Borough Arboriculture Officer (Tree Officer) has sadly had to be felled.

Fortunately a well developed replacement tree was located by Streetscene and after surveying the area to ensure it would be clear of any cables and drain pipes, they planted it. Other trees were pruned of their low hanging branches. Some of the boundary posts around the village green have also been replaced following representation by the Parish Council to the Borough Council.

Fulford Primary SchoolFulford Primary School is continuing to enjoy many activities inside and outside. As well as the children’s forest school day sessions along Cockieshall Lane, Class 1 and 2 have enjoyed a sunny village walk to meet Reverend Marion at St Nicholas Church. This was the first time many of the children had visited the Church with their school friends and they all sat and listened beautifully about the history and features of our local Church. Class 4 also completed the same activity and combined it with a ramble.

Class 1 and Class 2 will also celebrate Easter with a special service where they will share Easter songs. Thank you to Reverend Marion and her wardens for their time and support.

In January, we began a new whole school topic with a visit to the New Vic to watch Wind In The Willows. Friends and family of the school can enjoy the work displayed

in our library. Class 1 and 2 enhanced their chocolate topic learning with a visit to Cadbury World where they learnt about the history of chocolate, the production and of course the taste!Thank you to everyone for supporting our Comic Relief fundraising. As well as wearing red and eating donated cakes, we participated in activities, including yoga, circuits, mindful colouring, origami and basketball.

We also dressed up for World Book Day, shared our favourite texts and completed activities including writing a school poem. Our School Council went to Hilderstone Hall to share books by reading to the residents. This link is going to continue with our Reception children buddying up with the residents on a fortnightly basis to share hobbies and experiences, a very valuable experience which is beneficial to our young and old alike.

The children have also enjoyed an off timetable well-being day where they participated in their house groups in yoga, mindful colouring, memory jars and sport and an essential E-Safety day.

Our musicians have been very busy performing at the cluster schools concert at Forsbook and our Rock Steady bands have performed at their own concert.

The children have also been very busy designing and creating their Best Kept Village posters, which you will hopefully see displayed around the village in the near future. Finally, just to confirm we have now been able to extend our provision and together with the breakfast club at Little Learners we are now able to provide full wrap around care until 5:45pm.Have a lovely Easter from everyone at Fulford Primary School.Helen Sutton Headteacher

Flooding on Sandon RoadDuring the recent rain fall, Sandon Road has flooded several times by the entrance to Ridge Crescent, this may be due to a blocked highway gully. We have now informed Staffordshire County Council who are responsible for maintaining the highways gullies and they will be investigating the cause.

However, if we have heavy rainfall before the highway gully is cleared, please drive slowly and carefully through the water and be considerate of pedestrians who are in close proximity. Under section three of the Road Traffic Act 1988, it is illegal to splash someone as it amounts to driving “without reasonable consideration for other persons.” Those found guilty of deliberately driving through puddles and splashing pedestrians will likely be hit with a £100 fixed penalty notice and three penalty points if caught by police. However, should a motorist be deemed to be driving in a manner that “amounts to a clear act of incompetence, selfishness, impatience, and aggressiveness” then the maximum punishment of a £5,000 fine could be levelled.

To report a problem with a drain flooding on the highway network, please contact Staffordshire

County Council Highways department by Email: mailto:[email protected] [email protected]

or Phone: 0300 111 8000 (charged at a local rate). Alternatively, you can report an issue on the roads by using the online reporting system found at https://apps2.staffordshire.gov.uk/web/reportfault”https://apps2.staffordshire.gov.uk/web/reportfault.

Staffordshire County Council response times to reported issuesWhen works are scheduled, they are scheduled in accordance to their risk assessment outcome and other works raised throughout Staffordshire. Understandably, works which are considered high priority are completed first. Risk is determined on a number of factors and includes risk to life, property and serious harm.

Category 1 & 2Defects which pose an immediate risk take priority, and these are usually repaired within seven days. Please be aware that urgent works may include temporary repairs to make the location safe. Any temporary repairs will be followed by more permanent works at a later date.

Category 3Defects which are low risk will be grouped with similar works in the area so that we can be as efficient and cost effective as possible. Currently, over 50% of low risk repairs are completed within 60 days. The remaining reported defects will be repaired as soon as resources become available.

Check on the status of an existing reportIf you report an issue on the roads and leave your email address you will be provided with an update as soon as any progress is made on your report. Weeds on Windmill Hill Roundabout You may have noticed a build-up of weeds around the junction of Hilderstone Road and Windmill Hill. The unsightly weeds have caught the attention of a few local residence and we are pleased to report they have now had a spray of weed killer and will shortly be disappearing.

Meir Heath AcademyOnce again, we have had another busy term at Meir Heath Academy. From Easter assemblies to Year Three and Four’s production, we have been jam packed with lots of learning and exciting opportunities. Topics have included: Space for Reception, Traditional Tales for Year One, Chocolate for Year Two, Around the World for Year Three, Vikings for Year Four, World War Two for Year Five and Titanic for Year Six.

To help promote the enjoyment of topics, we always strive to create exciting learning opportunities and experiences. Year Two were lucky enough to visit the Kandi Factory to learn about chocolate and Year Five had an ‘evacuation’ day, where they waved goodbye to their loved ones.

They were also lucky enough to meet a real life evacuee, when Lily, a Great Grandmother to a girl in Year Five, came in to talk about her experiences.

Recently, we have subscribed to a maths website called Times Table Rock Stars. The children absolutely love it! They all have their own username and avatar (cartoon character), where they compete with their peers to see who is the fastest at times tables! Some classes have even contributed in a ‘Battle of the Bands’, where classes compete against each other. You know the children love something when they ask to stay in at lunchtimes to practise their times tables! To celebrate this fantastic new addition to Meir Heath, we get star times tables pupils (the fastest children and the most improved children) to come out in our Friday Celebration Assembly to show off and receive a certificate. We hope the motivation and determination continues (even the staff are loving it too!).

We also celebrated our annual, World Book Week from 4th March 2019, which started with a visit from a local poet. She shared her poetry with all classes and then set an activity for us all to complete an acrostic poem. We had surprise visitors in including David Marren, the Lord Mayor from Nantwich, who read to our Year Two children. All staff swapped over and read their favourite book to another class and parents also popped in for our D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read). To finish the week off, we held an art exhibition, where the children showed off their fantastic half term projects based around the picture book, Quest, by Aaron Becker.

We certainly don’t do things by halves at Meir Heath.

Rough Close and Barlaston CommonSome of you may have noticed recently that the bench conveniently located at the top of the common has been removed. Unfortunately, this is due to mindless vandalism that left the bench in a dangerous condition and subsequently removed due to health and safety.

The bench provided users of the common with a place to sit and admire the beautiful views across the Staffordshire and Shropshire countryside. Stafford Borough Council’s Conservation Officer is currently exploring options for a replacement bench and the Parish Council will update everyone as soon as possible.

Members of the public are encouraged to report any vandalism to Stafford Borough Council or alternatively through the Parish Clerk.

Telephone Box (Swynnerton Arms)As we reported some time ago the Parish Council adopted a number of redundant red telephone boxes across the Parish. These boxes have provided good alternative spaces for equipment such as the community defibrillators.

Currently, the condition of the telephone box outside of the Swynnerton Arms Public House is not at its best and the council is exploring options in relation to its renovation. Not only will this be more visually appealing at one of the village gateways but will also provide better conditions to continue housing the defibrillator.

Leadendale Lane ParkingResidents and Visitors to Leadendale Lane are politely asked to park sensibly and appropriately to ensure there is no damage to the grassed areas. Unfortunately, a number of vehicles have been parking on the grass verges and in bad weather have created a quagmire which is both unsightly and costly to repair.

‘Nottingham Knockers’ ScamAs you may have read in previous newsletters there has been a gang of burglars targeting neighbourhoods across the county known as the ‘Nottingham Knocker’s’.The way the gang operates is by an individual knocking on your door and pretending to be a reformed offender who has just released from prison and trying to do good. They claim to work for a company such as Betterware or Lakeland selling products they themselves have made on behalf of the company. To back up their claim they provide a convincing ‘peddlers licence’ to look legitimate

THIS IS FALSE!1.There is no such programme operated by the Prison Service or any company.2.The items they sell are often stolen or poorly made3. Their aim is to get you to leave your door open as you go to fetch cash or scope your building for a later return. After liaising with Staffordshire Police their advice is to say NO to these callers and where possible don’t answer the door to them. If you feel intimidated or suspicious you should call 101.

Mobile LibraryThe County Council review of the Mobile Libraries has maintained the visits to Fulford (Village Hall) every 3 weeks on a Wednesday from 12.15-12.45 (1, 15, 29 May; 12, 26 June; 10, 24 July; 7, 21 August; 4, 18 September; 2, 16, 30 October; 13, 27 November; 11 December). This service is only likely to survive the next review if it continues to be patronised.

Bus reviewThe review of the subsidies to bus services by the County Council resulted in many being withdrawn across the county and in particular the withdrawal of D&G Service 12 between Longton and Stone via Meir Heath, Fulford and Saverley Green. Our council has held two reviews with D&G and included other local parish councils; we are exploring possible funding to introduce a once a week service.

In an emergency, the public should continue to call 999, such as when a crime is in progress, when there is danger to life or when violence is being used or threatened.People should call 101 to report less urgent crime and disorder or to speak to their local officers.

105 for Electricity issuesYou can call 105 to report or get information about power cuts in your local area. You can also call 105 if you spot damage to electricity power lines and substations that could put you, or someone else, in danger. If there’s a serious immediate risk, you should call the emergency services too.

105 is a free service, available to people in England, Scotland and Wales.

You can call the number from mostlandlines and mobile phones.
