Purple patches in radiator indicate blockages in radiator caused by build up of sludge within the radiator. This as you know causes the radiator to be much colder than it should be and is not heating up efficiently. This is causing your gas boiler to use more gas to heat up the radiator.

Poweflush advised to remove all sludge within the heating system. The installation of a Magnaclean filter will help to prevent this occuring in the future.
