The Greater Bay Area (GBA) integrating Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong, combined with the “One Belt, One Road” initiative, is creating an energetic market that go beyond China and impacting the entire APAC region.

Forecasts predict that GBA will become the largest bay economy by 2020, bringing innovation, creativity and global opportunities.

Traditional industries and sectors such as Consulting and Finance are still going strong, while FMCG/Retail/Luxury have also been gaining their market shares, and recruitment needs, like never before. Tech and Fintech are the unavoidable players, a start-up yesterday could become a key organisation tomorrow. The opportunities are diverse, numerous and endless.

One noticeable fact is that the hunt for talents now has started much earlier than in the past. Some big financial institutions, as well as top consulting firms, start targeting graduates in June before they even join their campus!

Hong Kong is one of the world’s most competitive/freest economies and a vibrant international financial centre. Its financial services sector is one of the major economic pillars contributing to the city’s GDP and provides plenty of job opportunities in Banking, Fund Management, Securities, Insurance, Debt, Private Equity and the Fintech Sector.

Being the key financial and capital market in Asia, Hong Kong’s financial institutions are well positioned to capture opportunities on capital raising and deal making in the region, especially with the China’s Belt and Road Initiatives (BRI) and development of the Greater Bay Area. Financing demand, including green financing and green bonds, will continue to rise due to an increase in infrastructure projects under the BRI. It is expected that Hong Kong will continue to play a prominent role in capital raising, particularly in IPOs, bond issuance and the private equity sector. These initiatives will spark more China-focused career opportunities in the traditional finance industry.

Complementing as part of Hong Kong’ economic strategy, the Fintech sector is also burgeoning with a wave of new participants, such as start-ups and incumbent financial institutions that offer fintech solutions to global markets and worldwide users, including payment system and data analytics. With the surge in the number of participants in Fintech development, new career opportunities have been created in order to meet the demand of the talent market. Growing demands for talents in Fintech, Digital Finance and payment system are now following closely behind those of traditional IB and Asset Management. Most Graduate recruitment in Finance is done via Management Programmes which usually starts very early, thus be prepared to have your CV ready and have your interview skills polished by mid-September as the deadlines span across the end of September to the beginning of October.

Insurance is a booming sector that surfs on the latest tech development and digitalisation. This sector is now going through an overall revamp on its operation and there are many surprisingly exciting job opportunities for top talents.

The larger FMCG corporates such as P&G, Nestle, Unilever, Johnson & Johnson, and L’Oréal are commencing their campus recruitment process as early as September and application deadlines are set for October/November for Management Trainee programmes starting the following year. Their recruitment needs are mainly for the Hong Kong market, though some leading names are launching China-specific recruitment programmes, focusing on Shanghai, Beijing and Hangzhou. There is a true competition going on to snap up the best talents, therefore the earlier the better!

Companies that are based in China (such as ANTA and NetEase) have come to Hong Kong for the first time in 2018 for On-Campus Recruitment talks held at the larger Universities in Hong Kong where they have a good supply of Chinese students with International exposure (with curriculum taught in English).Tech companies such as Tencent, Facebook, Apple, and Google have a very structured recruitment process. They organise full recruitment days where they will meet, select and recruit talented graduates on the spot. Webinars and video conference systems are now commonly used to reach out to graduates. They are at the forefront of online tests and digitalisation of recruiting. Create your own video instead of a cover letter!

The start-up scene is bustling, leading names are collaborating with smaller structures to empower regional entrepreneurs with their industry knowledge, networking opportunities, resources, and funding in order to grow their business. These unconventional companies are very focused on getting their hands on talents with a new mind set; plenty of flexibility and agility, and a teamwork spirit combined with expertise and passion.

The consulting industry in Hong Kong is known for its leading position in the region. As one of the world’s leading business centres, Hong Kong is well positioned to provide consulting services to multinational corporations along with other companies in Hong Kong, on the Chinese mainland and in the region.

This scenario has attracted most international consulting firms to build their presence in Hong Kong. Still, the majority of consulting firms in Hong Kong remain local, small- to medium-sized general management consulting firms, which are typically set up by former consultants or former executives of multinational corporations.

Many of the consulting firms in Hong Kong provide various services in different industries and the industry continues to expand. Renowned for being a major international financial centre with a network of institutions and markets, helps provide an extensive client base and significant opportunities for management consulting in fields of corporate and business strategy as well as financial management.Overall, the key skills recruiters are looking* for are problem solving, teamwork and adaptability, with communication follows next. Resilience is perceived as a vital skill but is lacking in the newly graduated talents.

Hong Kong is a dynamic market in both the traditional and new sectors such as Fintech, AI. The start-ups ecosystem is supported by major players and graduates can find opportunities in either corporate roles or a more entrepreneurial career path.

Hong Kong, being the gateway to China, is also a place where more and more Chinese companies are coming to the city to target Mandarin speakers with an international background.
