Welcometo City of Glasgow College

Whatever your background, your ambitions or your current abilities we have a course that will launch your career. The College structures its courses to offer a ladder of opportunity. You can start with a short course and if you have the ability, move on to more advanced courses.

Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures, ages and abilities - there is no such thing as a typical student these days. The thought of starting college can be intimidating - meeting new people, managing the workload, finding your way around the buildings and facilities, financing your studies - but remember that all new students are in the same position, so you are not alone!

This prospectus provides a summarised version of all our full time courses - further information can be found on our website at www.cityofglasgowcollege.ac.uk or you can email the contact provided at the end of each course.

The information below applies to the majority of our courses:-

• If you don’t have the required qualifications, we’ll consider you for a place based on your experience - contact course leaders for more information.

• Students studying for a two year HND can choose to leave after one year of study with an HNC.

• Some HND courses accept students direct into 2nd year of the HND - full details can be found on our website.

• Once you’ve finished your course, you have the option to move onto a higher level course:

NC/NQ - Apply for relevant HNC/HND courses at our college.

HNC/D - Apply for degree level courses.

• Alternatively, you can go into related employment. Full details on opportunities available after you’ve completed your course are available on our website.

“I chose City of Glasgow College for its reputation in the building industry. I had a great time at college, the lecturers always made the learning experience fun and challenging.”

“Through the support and encouragement of staff here at the college, I achieved far beyond any expectations I had, culminating in winning the Top Student Award at my graduation.”

If you meet the minimum entry requirements (and there are still places available) you will be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you will get the opportunity to find out more about the course and tell us why you are interested in this subject area.

This prospectus details the minimum entry requirements for courses. However, there are some courses which have additional selection requirements, i.e., practical assessments, portfolio, audition. Please visit the website for full details.

“I left school at 15 with almost no qualifications. Studying at the college helped me so much - without my HND Legal Services, I would never have progressed to a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at University of Glasgow.”

“A life changing experience. Having left school at an early age, I didn’t think I would ever attend college. However, I did - I found out so much about myself along the way, learned so much and loved every minute of it.”

“College matured me as well as made me more confident through its talented experienced staff and the chances given to students. The course was incredible with great links to external theatre and creative companies.”

“It’s great being able to follow my dream of becoming a deck officer in the merchant navy. Lecturers take a hands-on interest in your progress - it’s nice to have that support and encouragement to keep pushing for your best.”

Your second choice will only be activated if your first choice is full or you are unsuccessful in your first choice. This provides a better opportunity for all applicants to secure a place on their first choice course.

• We will acknowledge your application and send all future correspondence to the email address you provided on your application form. If you change this you need to let us know.

• Your application will be assessed in order by date received, and if you meet the entry requirements for the course, you will be sent an email inviting you to create an account (My Applications). Once logged on, this account allows you to:

• Book an interview date and time. • View all your course choices. • Accept or decline an offer of a place when made.

• Please note that you are booking an interview date in advance (sometimes 4-6 weeks in advance) and therefore a course may be full by the time you attend an interview. Where this happens we will make every effort to let you know before you attend an interview. However, we may still ask you to attend as applicants with offers may cancel and spaces can become available at short notice. Where the course is full and you have a successful interview you will be given a reserve offer.

MONEY MATTERSMost college students get financial support towards the cost of studying. For example most students do not have to pay course fees and many students receive support towards their living, travel, study and childcare expenses. The financial support you get depends on the level of course you study. The tables below show what you can apply for and who to contact.

FE FUNDING TABLE

Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) - 16-17 year-olds can get up to £30 per week depending on household income (this will be based on your parent’s earnings). EMA students will also be eligible to apply for a non means tested Bursary to cover travel and study costs.

Further Education Bursary - This is the main source of help with living expenses, travel and study costs for those over 18 years old. This award is means tested (based on household income i.e. parental/spouse earnings) and how much you receive will also depend on your age and personal circumstances.

Childcare Fund Support - The priority groups for childcare support are lone parents and low income families (evidenced by Working Tax Credits). Students studying full-time or part-time vocational programmes are eligible to apply. Support from the fund is discretionary, and only open to eligible students to meet the costs of formal/registered childcare.

Further Education Hardship Fund - This Fund is primarily for emergency use to enable students to remain in education when situations arise that may prevent them from continuing with their studies. Awards are based on an assessment of your income and expenditure and are made at the discretion of the college.

Student Development - Learning Support can provide assistance with any specialist or additional equipment or support required in class.

Help for Students with a Disability - If you require additional assistance because of a disability you may be eligible for additional support from Bursaries e.g. help with the cost of travel if you incur additional transport costs as a result of your disability.

HE FUNDING TABLE

Fees - Scottish students studying in Scotland do not have to pay tuition fees, but you must still apply to SAAS to have them paid to the College on your behalf. If you do not apply (or leave the course before the 1st December) you will be responsible for paying your fees and the College will invoice you direct.

Young Student Bursary - A grant you do not need to repay for students who are under 25 where household income is below £34,000.

Independent Students Bursary - A grant you do not need to repay for independent students where household income is below £17,000. Independent students are those who are over 25 or under 25 and are living with a partner or self-supporting.

Lone Parent Grant / Dependant Grant / Care Leavers Grant - Supplementary grants which you do not need to pay back if you live with an adult dependant with a low income, a child dependant where you are a lone parent or where you are a care leaver who may need assistance during long holiday periods like the summer break.

Disabled Students Allowance - If you have a disability, learning difficulty or mental health problem you may be eligible for additional help made up of a basic allowance, cost of special equipment or non medical personal help. If you think you might be eligible contact the College Learning Support section.

Student Loan - You don’t have to take out a Student Loan but it is the main source of living expenses for most students. Remember you only pay back the loan once you’ve left college or university and are earning more than £16,365. For advice on Student Loans contact our Student Advisors.

Childcare - The College can provide assistance with the cost of childcare. Priority is given to lone parents and low income families (evidenced by Working Tax Credits).

Hardship Funds - Students who are experiencing financial difficulty can apply to the college for additional support. It’s important to apply early as funds are limited.

Support For Learning - In addition to the Disabled Students Allowance offered by SAAS the college can offer practical support with equipment etc.
