HEALTHY HEART COALITION OF FULTON COUNTY

Membership: The Healthy Heart Coalition (HHC) is a group of diverse organizations and

community residents that work together to improve the cardiovascular health outcomes in Fulton

County. In November 2011 over twenty-one organizations were represented at the kick-off

meeting for this coalition with a focus on creating a movement in the reduction of heart disease.

Mission Statement: The mission of HHC is to improve heart health in Fulton County by

implementing strategies that result in system, policy and environmental changes.

Statement of Need: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in Georgia

Approximately 9,041 hospitalizations occurred among Fulton County residents due to CVD in 2008. CVD accounted for nearly 30% of deaths in Fulton County; with 1,684 cardiovascular

deaths in 2008. The highest death rate is among Non-Hispanic Black men at 346 per 100,000.

Majority deaths are due to heart attacks, stroke and hypertensive heart disease.

Future Plans: The coalition seeks to develop an effective multifaceted approach to promoting

heart health by focusing on actions people can take themselves and actions that businesses,

community organizations, providers and other systems can take to prevent cardiovascular

disease. The coalition is ever evolving. We will continue to build our coalition with the overall

goal of reducing the rate of cardiovascular disease in Fulton County.

SMOKE FREE COALITION OF FULTON COUNTY

Membership: The Smoke-Free Coalition of Fulton County (SFCFC) is a diverse group of

concerned citizens who seek to reduce the health and economic burden of tobacco use and

increase awareness of tobacco control issues among community members and policy makers in

Fulton County.

Mission Statement: The mission of the Smoke Free Coalition of Fulton County is to protect

Fulton County residents from the dangers of second hand smoke through diverse collaborative

partnerships, to prevent and reduce the burden of tobacco use on Fulton County citizens through

education, awareness and to promote a tobacco free community that benefits the health of all

Fulton County residents.

Statement of Need: Tobacco use remains the single most preventable cause of death in the

United States. More deaths are causes each year by tobacco use than by deaths from alcohol,

illegal drug use, motor vehicle accidents, AIDS, murders and suicides combined. 15.9% of adult

Fulton County residents are current smokers, and tobacco use in Georgia results in $3.4 billion in

lost productivity costs among adults aged 35 years and older.

Future Plans: The Smoke Free Coalition of Fulton County will continue to work towards our

vision of a smoke-free county by supporting activities and programs that increase public

awareness in addressing tobacco use in Fulton County, implementing a social media campaign to

educate and mobilize citizens around the health benefits of clean, smoke free indoor air, and

educating decision makers about the public health impact of comprehensive smoke free policies.

The plan will be enhanced as each goal, objective and related activities are completed. Long term goals through 2014 are as follows.

SAFE KIDS FULTON COUNTY COALITION

Membership: Safe Kids Fulton County Coalition is dedicated to fighting the number one killer of children – unintentional injuries. The coalition includes safety officials, safety specialist and volunteers. Many of our members are equipped to teach safety skills and provide safety tips to parents, caregivers and children throughout Fulton County.

Mission Statement: The mission is to create an environment in Fulton County where children 14 and under are free from traumatic accidental injuries through: community partnerships, advocacy, public awareness and distribution of, and education on the proper uses of safety equipment.

Statement of Need: Injuries kill more children each year than diseases, kidnapping and drugs combined. Approximately 6,000 children are killed and 50,000 disabled annually as a result of traffic accidents, burns, drowning, falls, choking, poisoning and other injuries. In Fulton County, about 100 children 15 years of age and younger die each year from accidental injuries. For every fatality, approximately 45 children require hospitalization and 1,300 require emergency treatment.

Future Plans: Safe Kids Fulton will provide leadership to local communities in the effort to reduce accidental childhood injury. During the last ten years the unintentional injury death rate among Georgia’s children in Fulton County 14 and under has declined by 32 percent. We will continue to build our coalition with the overall goal to save children’s lives by developing and conducting programs that reduce or eliminate preventable, unintentional injuries and deaths among children.
