Fulton County Sherriff’s Department Lt. Brad Ward is pictured with (left to right) Fulton FS Controller, Candace Hanson, Fulton FS Manager Mark Pedigo, and Fulton County Sheriff Jeff Standard following this year’s “I Shopped the Sheriff” Grocery Cart Race. The Sheriff’s team again won, this year collecting 292 food items worth $422.28. Team Fulton FS collected a commendable $912.41 worth of food items, but proved to be less efficient shoppers with only 179 items in their “haul”.

FCFB Women’s Committee volunteers assisted with the “I Shopped the Sheriff Grocery cart race by swapping out full carts with empty ones for the participants, unloading carts onto the counter, and bagging up and delivering collected food to the Lewistown Association of Churches Food Pantry. Nearly eight cart-loads of groceries were delivered following the event. Pictured is Linda Lane, Jane Mellert, Sue Stafford, Vanessa Williams, Shelley Connant-Sweatman, and Margaret Hall.

Checkers at the Lewistown County Market tally up the groceries of Team Fulton FS during the FCFB Women’s Committee “I Shopped the Sheriff” grocery cart race on June 5th. The race, held on National Hunger Awareness Day, spotlighted the food insecurity in the United States, despite us having the safest, most affordable, most abundant food supply in the world.

FCFB Women’s Committee volunteers and Fulton FS employees serve up lunch to the visiting group from St. Germaine in late May. Left to right are Linda Lane, Sue Stafford, and Tana Ridle.

Over 150 kids participated in the Annual Fulton/Mason Farm Safety Camp on June 23rd. At the Fire Safety Station, conducted by Lewistown Fire Department, a firefighter gives a camper a chance to handle the fire hose. Other stations included water safety, survivalist training, food safety, livestock safety, equipment and mower safety, and weather safety.

FCFB Vice President Wes Strode answers questions from some of our adopted St. Germaine students during the group’s tour at his family’s cattle farm on May 17th. The Strodes showed the kids the animals, barns, lots, equipment, and feed stuffs used to run their farm.

John Lock was one of our senior exhibitors leading the Young Leader Show Clinic on June 3rd at the Fulton County Fairgrounds. A dozen young exhibitors took part in the program, which was led by older 4-H members sharing their experience and knowledge with the up and comers. Other Senior exhibitors leading sessions that day were Jenna Spangler, Nathan Spangler, Ryan Spangler, and Kaylin Williams.

In Loving Memory ofHoward Vohland

We were deeply saddened by the passing of Past President Howard Vohland on June 7. He is sur-vived by his wife of 66 years Lois (Rohrer) Vohland; sons, Bill ( Brenda) Vohland and Bob (Deb) Vohland; grandchildren, Isaac (Ruth) Vohland, Caty (Colin) Campbell, Ross Vohland, Nathan Vohland and Seth (Natalie) Vohland; great-grandchildren, Sawyer and Finn Campbell, Livia and Audra Vohland and Henry Vohland and one on the way; and sister, Eileen Dillard.

Howard served as Fulton County Farm Bureau President from 1984 to 1990; a time of much change in the organization and its affiliate companies. Howard was, and remained, deeply committed to this organization he cared deeply about. He even became a Country Companies Agent for a time when his leadership was needed.

Howard was a graduate of Washington High School, and a Veteran of the Ko-rean. He was a Pioneer seed grower and seller, and was a Master Farmer in 1992. He was a member of the Fairview Reformed Church and a Charter Member of the Fulton Mason Camp of Gideons International. He was a member of the Masons, servedontheFultonCountySoil&WaterConservationDistrictBoard,1stFarmCredit Board, Fairview Farmers Elevator Board, and the Fulton County Farm Bu-reau Board.

Howard was the driving force in the formation of the Fulton County Farm Bu-reau Foundation. He served as President of the Board of Trustees from its creation in 1995 until his desire to retire in February of 2017. The future of the agricul-ture industry, and the guarantee that young people would be able to pursue careers within in it, was very important to Howard. It was evident to anyone who heard the emotion in his voice when he spoke of the Foundation and of the students who received scholarships from it.

We are humbled and honored to have had the privilege of Howard’s leadership and friendship for MANY years. We are so very thankful to the Vohland family for designating the Fulton County Farm Bureau Foundation for his memorials. His legacy will carry on though the generosity of those who knew and loved him.
