(StatePoint) Summertime is all about trips to the pool, beach and park. And it also means time spent in the sun.

Over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined, according to The Skin Cancer Foundation, making proper sun protection a must. As you enjoy time outdoors, it’s important to understand and follow sun safety guidelines.

Sun Protection for FamiliesA new survey reveals some surprising facts. When moms with children younger than 18

were asked about the correct amount of sunscreen needed to apply to the face and body, fewer than half knew the right amount. And nearly two in 10 were unaware that after an initial slathering of sunscreen, they needed to reapply more. So says a new survey of moms commissioned by NO-AD Sun Care.

“The correct amount of sunscreen to be ap-plied -- or reapplied -- is one ounce,” says Bre-vard, Florida-based dermatologist, Dr. Richard C. Kirkpatrick. “Think of a shot glass of sunscreen or an amount the size of a golf ball.”

Parents should apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to themselves and children 15 minutes before going out in the sun to give it time to bond to skin, and then reapply at least every two hours or after swimming, sweating and immediately after towel drying.

More than half of moms responding believe the proper time to apply sunscreen is as soon as they start feeling skin burn.

“By the time you feel your skin burning, the sun’s UV rays are damaging your cells’ DNA. Skin cancers get a foothold when this damage affects the DNA of genes that control skin cell growth,”

says Dr. Kirkpatrick. The cost of sun protection may become a con-

cern as families begin to apply the proper amount of sunscreen. If that is the case, one cost effective choice is NO-AD, which offers a selection of products that are affordable and widely available.

Sun Protection for WomenBeautiful summer skin is all about making

safe sun care a habit. A routine is easier when you find products you will love to use. Look for

Do You Practice Safe Sun Habits?lightweight, fast-absorbing formulas comprised of ingredients that have benefits for skin. For exam-ple, Ocean Potion offers formulas with sea kelp, Vitamins D3 and E, and a pleasant orange cream scent. The line is PABA-free, (which is an allergen for some people.) For those who want to avoid the sun altogether, a self-tanner such as Ocean Potion EverGlow, can help you get the sun kissed look without the exposure.

Don’t let summer fun distract you from pro-tecting skin from harmful UV rays, every time you leave the house.

“What better place than Monterey Bay for kids to explore and learn to care about the won-ders of the ocean,” says PG local, Pat Rutowski, now the new Managing Director of Camp SEA Lab, a local and regional Marine Science education program that grows campers who want to be stewards of not only our amazing coast but also the world’s ocean.

Pat is a familiar face around Pacific Grove. If her name sounds familiar, she’s been on the Board of the Pacific Grove Library when the group ran adult spelling bees, and on the Board of the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History when they held Family Fun Days. Pat led a Pacific Grove Girl Scout troop and worked for both of the two largest employers in the area: Monterey Bay Aquarium in Outreach (the Aquaravan) and Visitor Programs (10 years), and at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula as Director of Education (14 years). You may also recognize Pat from Monterey iMPRoV performances at The Works and PG Arts Center.

Now she’s come full circle to Camp SEA Lab having been an integral part of the first pilot summer camp program 17 years ago. The program that Pat helped initiate has grown and ex-panded under the School of Natural Sciences at California State University, Monterey Bay, and has held to its mission of providing hands-on Outdoor School for grades 5 to 8 and Summer Camps that offer campers ages 8 to 16 the following three opportunities:

Science: experience Marine Science concepts and technology by visiting local marine labs and meeting scientists.

Education: explore our rocky coast and sandy shores, discover marine life, and encounter the diverse web of life that calls the ocean home.

Adventure: engage in exciting activities such as kayaking, surfing, sailing, boogie boarding, snorkeling or tidepooling!

Throughout, young people gain skills in teamwork, make new friends and gain self-confi-dence to enable them to become ocean stewards, working to take care of our local ocean resourc-es. Returning campers have unique experiences each year as each week focuses on a different theme with unique activities and trips to marine environments around the bay.

Through its amazing journey these past 17 years, Camp SEA Lab has impacted many local residents as well as campers from further afield:

“I just wanted to let you know how much my grandson enjoyed his time at Camp Sea Lab. He even convinced me to go kayaking with him the next Saturday. We had a lovely time!”

“Our 14-year-old is a Camp Sea Lab “graduate.” Our 8-year-old could not wait to attend. Moving here as an adult I wanted my children to get the experiences I never had and WOW, Camp Sea lab each session, provides that and more...with caring, educated, fun staff. Worth every penny!”

Pat truly looks forward to being part of this and future summers of providing excellent Ma-rine Science adventures for local children. To get more information about these programs call 831-582-3681 or visit our website: campsealab.org. See you at Camp SEA Lab!

Inaugural WAVE program offers free activities for Pacific Grove kids

WAVE is a three-week summer day coed camp for ages 10-12, offered free of charge to Pacific Grove kids. WAVE was developed to encourage activity in athletics, the arts (art, dance, and music), and to further education in health, nutrition, and fitness.

Classes and activities will be led by the teachers and coaches from Pacific Grove High School, and all activ-ities will take place on the high school campus. WAVE staff believes this will promote interaction with future mentors, provide motivation and give an introduction to the future they will have in the Pacific Grove School District.

The program is committed to developing respect for self and others, instilling the importance of following the rules, loyalty, and sportmanship. Most important, say organizers, is to have fun with their peers. “The WAVE program is a character building experience and our staff is committed to helping build our youth into oustanding young citizens!” says Executive Director, Darryl Smith. The program is open to boys and girls who live in Pacific Grove or attend Pacific Grove schools.

There will be a parents’ orientation meeting on Friday, July 7, 2017 from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the high school gymnasium. The fun begins on July 10 at 8:30 a.m. and continues until July 28.

More information can be had by seeing their notice on page 2 of this publication, or by calling Darryl Smith at 408-960-5194 or emailing [email protected].

Do you remember the Cedar Street Times article last year, about volunteers trying to build a nonprofit White Stag Camp on 160 acres of newly-purchased land off Carmel Valley Road at Los Padres National Forest? Boy, have they made prog-ress!

Volunteers have been working hard all winter, even during the storms, to improve White Stag Piney Creek Camp. Each area now has flush toilets and shower facil-ities. Campers can now cool off in the swimming pool and hike directly into the Los Padres National Forest!

Session 1 is June 18-24 and Ses-sion 2 is July 16-22. To register, email

I’ve Got That White Stag Feeling, Down in My Heart!!to: [email protected] or call 1-800-559-3188. More info is at www.whitestagcamp.org. The pro-gram is open to boys and girls who have completed the 5th grade and are not yet 19 years old. Camp fee is $479, if registration is complete and paid in full by April 30.

White Stag Leadership De-velopment training is over 55 years old and teaches youth a specific set of leadership competencies. It’s a lot more than “just camping” – it’s outdoor adventure while learning for life.

During the training week, camp-ers get repeated opportunities to learn and practice leadership skills in small and large group settings. They

develop plans for applying these skills in their home organizations, family, and community. Experienced adults and trained youth leaders closely and continually monitor all elements of the program.

For more than 30 years, the all-volunteer, nonprofit White Stag Leadership Development Academy Inc. has operated area leadership camps for thousands of youth, on rented or “temporary use” land. The Central Coast team purchased the former Rio Alto Gun Club property last year.

“We have always leveraged the outdoors as our classroom to provide a fast-paced, fun, enthusiastic, and challenging week of camp, using the

White Stag leadership methodology” said Steve Cardinalli, board member. “This is an incredible opportunity for youth to invest a week of their life in exchange for an experience to learn core leadership skills in a stunning outdoor setting that will positively impact their lives forever.”

The 2016 camp had more than 500 coed campers, in two week-long sessions, including more than 40 from Taiwan, China and other foreign countries. Many campers came from Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, 4H Clubs, Future Farmers of America and other youth organiza-tions, but no camping experience is necessary.

The next session starts June 7. Kids interested in drama and dancing can attend Ragamuffin Musical Theatre beginning June 12 and perform in “Singing in the Rain.” There are also sports camps offered at Adventure Day Camp.
