Fun Holidays to Celebrate in October

Meals on Wheels would like to wish good luck and farewell to our Lead Packer, Kathy Werner. Kathy has been working for Meals on Wheels for 13 years as a transporter and packer. She has helped count and pack every single meal for our congregate sites and home-bound seniors. She will be greatly missed by the Meals on Wheels staff and volun-teers.

Getting to Know Our SeniorsQuestion of the Month: What is your favorite meal from your past?

Michael from Hamburg replied, “The question about my favorite meal brought many memo-

Roughly 110 million adults in the U.S. are age 50 or older. If you’re one of them

or know someone who is, there’s something you need to know: As you age, your nutrition needs change. You may become less ac-tive, your metabolism slows, and your ability to absorb some nutri-ents becomes less effi cient. You need fewer calories to keep you going – which means the amount of nutrients in your food becomes even more important.

To help, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and nutrition scientists at the Jean Mayer U.S. Department of Agriculture Human Nutrition Re-search Center on Aging at Tufts University, with support from AARP Foundation, created My-Plate for Older Adults.

What’s on MyPlate for Older Adults?

Based on the federal govern-ment’s guide to forming healthy dietary habits, MyPlate for Old-er Adults makes good nutrition easy. Even better, it helps seniors with fi xed incomes select healthy foods within their budget. That includes showing how frozen, dried and canned fruits and veg-etables can be wise alternatives to fresh produce.

MyPlate for Older Adults en-courages eating whole grains, which are high in fi ber, as well

as plant-based proteins such as beans and tofu, along with fi sh and lean meat. Vegetables and fruits make up half the plate, re-fl ecting the importance of eating several servings a day in a range of colors. MyPlate for Older Adults also recommends using herbs and spices instead of salt to season food. Cutting back on salt can have big health benefi ts – es-pecially for older adults, who are at risk of hypertension.

You can use the MyPlate for Older Adults as a tool when you shop to help you decide on types and combinations of foods, and as a reminder that the foods you choose to eat should be rich in vitamins and minerals.

The rest of the recommenda-tions include:

• Brightly colored vegetables such as carrots and broccoli

• Deep-colored fruit such as ber-ries and peaches

• Whole, enriched and fortifi ed grains and cereals such as brown rice and 100 percent whole wheat bread

• Low-fat and nonfat dairy products such as yogurt and low-lactose milk

• Dry beans and nuts, fi sh, poul-try and eggs

• Liquid vegetable oils, soft spreads low in saturated and trans fats

• Lots of fl uids such as water and fat-free milk

• Physical activity such as walk-ing, resistance training and light cleaning.

Five Senior Health MythsEvery day, it’s estimated, 10,000 Americans turn 65 years old. Some of these people, unfortunately, have misconceptions that can jeopardize their health. Ma-jor health myths and misconceptions regarding senior health include:

1. If I feel fi ne, I am fi ne. Chronic infections can last so long that the way they feel becomes the “new normal,” when it shouldn’t be.

2. Sleep isn’t important anymore. Older adults need the same seven to nine hours of sleep they did when younger.

3. It’s too late to start exercising. Check with your doctor and start slowly, but there’s no reason why seniors can’t get in some exercise (even if they’ve never done it before).

4. Drink water only when thirsty. You may need hydration before you even notice or before you feel like you need it.

5. Dry mouth is just part of aging. Maintaining proper oral hygiene is important at any age, and espe-cially for denture wearers who, even with no teeth, ben-efi t from a regu-lar oral hygiene routine specially formulated for them, rather than simply accepting poor health.

Fortunately, Cleanadent paste from Dr. B Dental So-lutions is the only toothpaste available that is gentle enough to safely brush both the gums and oral ap-pliances (such as dentures, implants, overdentures and full-arch implant bridges), helping prevent and treat dry mouth, sore spots and infections. Thanks to its special low-abrasive formula, it will not scratch, tarnish or negatively affect dentures in any way (and will actually help keep them fresh, clean, as well as stain- and odor-free). The paste is formulat-ed with vitamins (A, D and E), aloe vera, coconut oil and tea tree oil to moisturize and revitalize the gums while removing microorganism-infested biofi lm. There are no artifi cial fl avors or colors.

Xerostomia (dry mouth) is among denture wearers’ most frequently cited problems.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness MonthThis is a great time for companies and individuals to increase awareness of the disease. Some ways that you can show your support for Breast Cancer Awareness month are: wear pink, take part in a breast cancer walk, or wear a pink ribbon.

Tasty Tips for Smarter Snacking1. Check your fl uid level – Are you thirsty rather than hungry?

Since it’s easy to confuse the signals for hunger and thirst, try drink-ing a refreshing glass of water before you dig into a snack. This will also assist with portion control.

2. Pay attention to your snacks – It’s easy to overeat (and still not feel satisfi ed) if you eat while driving, reading, or watching TV. Slow down and enjoy your snack: you’ll eat less and enjoy it more.

3. Pay attention to protein – Many snack foods are low in protein, as well as high in sugar and fat. Foods with protein (meat, dairy, nuts, and soy) provide more nutrients and have longer staying power.

4. Grab some nuts – A small handful of nuts (about an ounce) can satisfy your craving for something salty and provide some super nu-trition (vitamins, minerals, and proteins) at the same time.

5. Grab some vegetables – Nature’s fast food makes an excellent on-the-run snack. Keep sliced vegetables ready to go in the fridge and fi ll up a small bag before you head out the door.

6. Grab some fruit – Feeling like something sweet and fl avorful? Fresh, dried or canned fruit is a luscious treat any time of day. Keep several single-serving fruit choices on deck to avoid empty calorie snacks.

Health and Wellness – A Flu Vaccine is the Best Protection Against Flu

The best way to pro-tect against fl u and its potentially serious complications is with a fl u vaccine. The

CDC recommends that everyone six months of age and older get a sea-sonal fl u vaccine each year by the end of October. However, as long as fl u viruses are circulating, vaccina-tions should continue throughout fl u season, even into January or later.

Flu vaccination is especially im-portant for people 65 years and older because they are at high risk of developing serious complications from fl u. Immunity from vaccination sets in after about two weeks.

Flu vaccines are updated each season as needed to keep up with changing viruses. Also, immunity wanes over a year so annual vac-cination is needed to ensure the best possible protection against infl uen-za. A fl u vaccine protects against the fl u viruses that research indicates will be most common during the up-coming season. The 2018-2019 fl u vaccine has been updated from last season’s vaccine to better match cir-culating viruses.
