“Life Boat”1. Appoint one recorder and one reporter2. Be prepared to discuss w/ the big group (class)3. In your teams discuss the following scenario:

You and your teammates were in a shipwreck hitting some rocks somewhere off coast of Bermuda. No one knows where you are because your ship’s communication device was badly damaged in the crash. The ship is slowly taking on water and will shortly sink. Unfortunately, the ship has only one life boat and it is made for one person only (it will sink w/ 2 or more or if people cling to it’s sides). You have 2 minutes to discuss and decide who will get to go in the life boat.

Write down who, why, and the thought process

FTFD

• FTFD = Effective Questioning Techniques

• FACT• You can start by stating, “Did you know the current

divorce rate for all 1st time marriages is 50%? That’s one in every two marriages.”

Page 13: Fun & Interactive ways to teach relationship topics in Family Consumer Science

FTFD

• THINK• Why do you think this is the case?

• Why is there such a high divorce rate?• What’s going on?• Who do you think is impacted by divorce and why?

• Ask your students to take 2 minutes to discuss w/ their teammates (TBL)

• Have each team appoint one person to write their team’s #1 reason up on the board

• Have them prepared their reporter to share the team’s answers w/ the big class

FTFD

• FEEL• It’s important to dig deeper – using both sides of the brain• Ask the students to discuss w/ their teammates: • “How do you feel about divorce? Why?”• You may use visuals to help (see bottom image)

Page 15: Fun & Interactive ways to teach relationship topics in Family Consumer Science

FTFD

• DO• This is the action phase:• Have students work w/ their teammates to come up w/a

plan of action at the micro, exo, and or macro level (Bronfenbrenner) to address the issue of divorce

• Ask students to brainstorm a solution, write it down, and be prepared to share it w/ the big group (class).
