FUN WAYS TO TEACH MULTIPLICATION
4 x 4 = ?
THE DREADED MULTIPLICATION TABLES
TYPICALLY TAUGHT IN THE THIRD GRADE (AND REVIEWED FOR YEARS TO COME)
HAVE BEEN THE BANE OF STUDENTS, PARENTS, AND TEACHERS FOR YEARS.
FORTUNATELY, THERE ARE SOME ENGAGING WAYS TO DO IT!
MUSICAL MATH Putting facts to song always makes them more memorable—so do it! Make some of your own, or ask students to help.
USE TECHNOLOGY There are plenty of great games that can
help students practice their times tables.
GET ACTIVE For large classrooms, divide students into small groups and “multiply” them. Two groups of two students? Now we have four!
For smaller classrooms, place answer cards on one side of the room and students on the other. Have students race to the correct answer.
MAKE IT PERSONAL Have students make connections to some of their
favorite things and use them in sample problems.
