Structure of the Perineum• Skin covered
muscular region between the vagina and the anus.
• Diamond-shaped between the thighs
Function of the Perineum• Prevents involuntary seepage from the
rectum (keeps feces inside colon)
• Can be torn during childbirth.
Episiotomy = Cutting of Perineum
Structure of Uterus• Pear-shaped organ 3” long, 2” wide, 1”
thick that acts as a womb
• Located between bladder and rectum
• Ligaments hold it in place
• Made up of 3 layers– Endometrium – mucous membrane that has
large blood supply; where zygote attaches– Myometrium – thick layer of muscle to
support uterus and propel baby out– Periotoneum – layer furthest from baby
Function of the Uterus• Permits sperm to move toward the
fallopian tubes for fertilization
• Provides nutrients to embryo until placenta is formed
• Contracts to push baby out during labor
Uterus
Prolapsed Uterus• Ligaments and muscles holding the uterus
in place get weak
• Uterus moves and exits the vagina
