Teacher’s Day Celebration (5 Sept.)
The birthday of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan is
celebrated every year in the form of Teacher’s Day ,
when, again as per tradition Children attempt to
play the role of teacher in the classroom. Children of
Classes 3, 4 and 5 taught the classes 1 and 2 in small
batches of 10 each using view cards and charts. The
teachers in each centre talked to the children about
Dr S Radhakrishnan and the day is to honour
Scholarship. Children were encouraged to write a
short piece on Teacher and the younger children
drew artwork on similar theme.
Apna Skool honours all teachers with a small gift for each one. Teachers pledged themselves to follow the ideals
of the illustrious scholar teacher highly respected Sarvepalli Radhakrshnan.
World Literacy Day Celebration (8 Sept.) On the world Literacy Day, Teachers explained that to be known as Literate, one should be able to Read and Write
in at least one language. It is a vital need for everyone to be literate in order that they and the nation make
necessary progress. Children were quietly impressed and promised that they will themselves be the messengers of
this mission and will make their mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters and everyone in their neighbourhood
become literate. Apna Skool will use their students as Agents to bring about the mission of universal literacy
program. Children made a procession with suitable placards and slogans around their bastis (dwelling camps)
reciting songs celebrating Literacy such as 1) ka kha ga sikhoge agar kathin na hogi.
News Paper –
Each Apna Skool centre gets a copy of the daily newspaper. Teachers keep the children aware of important world
news, national news and local news. It is envisaged that the centres will soon start their own newspaper and
distribute news and views among themselves. Newspapers can serve as an important medium of social change
and it is good to have children aware of their environment and useful information through them.

Rohitesh Gupta, who had been an active
volunteer for Apna Skool, currently
pursuing his Phd at SUNY, Buffalo, NY
visited Apna Skool and interacted with
the Teachers and Students. It gave us all
a great pleasure welcoming him to Apna
Skool. He too appeared very pleased with
the response he got to his questions to
the children.
Health related activities: All children in Apna Skool are regularly administered VitaminB and C tablets every week. This month it was due to give a spoon of Vitamin A syrup to each child, which will be repeated after about 6 months.
Bal Sabha Children’s Club, activities of which are discussed and decided by the students themselves, meets every week on Saturdays.
Bal Jagran From the activity to peruse the daily newspaper emerged a children initiated Children Wall Paper, content for which consists of News happening in their own neighbourhood. Children make up the news pieces and compose them with artwork and paste them in School walls for everyone to read and benefit.

Vigyan Mela (15 and 16 Dec)
Venue: Swami Vivekanand Vidyalaya, Lodhar.
Like in the previous years Swami Vivekananda Vidyalaya at Lodhar organized a Vigyan Mela on December 15 and 16.
Alongwith the children of SVV Lodhar Apna Skool students from Dhamikheda, Panki, Panki Padhav, Tatyagan 1 and 2,
Avon, Mera Kalra 1 and Tamsaha centres participated. Children demonstrated cute experiments, explained their
models and described their scale models for all types of visitors in the Mela. Visitors included Professors and students
from IIT, parents of children and the village folk. The challenge for the Child Scientists is to explain their exhibits to
those who know about it well and so verify whether they are doing right; and also to those people for whom this is an
exciting experience and needs correct explanation.
Half Yearly Exam (15 Dec. to 31 Dec.)
The main objective of the Half yearly examinations at the Apna Skool centres, held during 15 Dec to 31 Dec is for
the Teachers to get an objective feedback on how well the children have learnt the lessons and plan out the
future course of teaching program. The answer papers of the children are corrected and given back to the
children, so they too know how well they have performed.
Extra-CurricularActivity –
(New Year Cards & Calendar Making)
As in previous years Apna Skool children made work to compose New Year Greeting Card as well as the New Year Calendar, soft copies were sent to all our well-wishers, donors and friends .
Visitors of the Month. Siddharth (Dec 18 -21, 2012) Dr Siddharth, who works in Boston University, was a visitor to many centres of Apna Skool during December. He showed children where Boston is located and explained how one may use the scale provided on it can be used to estimate how far it is from Kanpur. With the finger as a measuring
stick, he estimated the distance to be about 16000 km. In Science, as also in many aspects of life, measurement is important. One may not always have readily available proper measuring instruments such as a metre stick, weighing scale or thermometer. One should be able to use common things available to estimate and that is also a scientific art.
Nutrition Program
Mala Foundation (Belgium) sponsored Nutrition program plays a vital role in the proper development of
children in the Apna Skool system. We provide hot mid-day meals in 18 Apna Skool centres and dry
nutritional supplement in the remaining centres, where we lack facilities to prepare proper meals. We
monitor, as a part of the program height, weight and other details of the children and note systematic
improvement in their health parameters.
HIGHLIGHTS 1. About 60 % of students in Apna Skool Centres are continuing students from preceding year. (see
Table below.)
2. Girls outnumber boys in most centres.
3. We encourage social responsibility among children – they spread messages such as, of avoiding
plastic bags through making and selling paper bags as a part of their extra curricular activities.
4. Older children try to influence their parents to refrain from the evils of alcohol and petty quarrels.
