Who is it for? Staff delivering or preparing to deliver functional skills in Englishand/or Maths
Outcomes: This five session, intensive training course will equip you withthe necessary skills, practical knowledge and resources toenable you to tackle the challenge of classroom delivery offunctional maths and English. The course covers generic themes
in sessions one and five, with specific input relevant to eitherFunctional maths or English in sessions two, three and four withresources and teaching approaches modelled by the tutors.After the first generic session participants can choose to followeither the English or maths specialist route.
Training provider: Delivered by two experienced practitioners and teachereducators (see attached trainer profiles)

Training outline:
The first workshop introduces some key messages about Functional Skills andrelated teaching approaches that underpin the delivery of the course. These arethen explored in different ways within the two specialist strands of the course:
the importance of developing Personal Learning and Thinking Skillsalongside Functional Skills
problem solving strategies active learning approaches
integrated approaches to delivery
revision strategies
use of e-learning tools
Functional English specialist route three sessionscovering:
a review of the demands of FE assessments
active learning approaches to developing reading and writing
developing awareness of context, audience and purpose
planning a piece of writing and organising ideas
exploring grammar: sentence structure, connectives, common errors
tips on supporting with spelling
use of e-learning tools
integrating speaking and listening skills
Functional Maths specialist route three sessions covering:
a review of the demands of functional maths across all levels
group, collaborative tasks
Throughout the programme arange of useful websites andfree resources will beexplored and recommended.
The course will be fullysupported throughout itslength via a blog so thatparticipants can collaborateand communicate betweensessions, with on-linemoderation from the tutors.

Trainer Profiles:
Julia SmithJulia is a Subject Specialist with Ofqual for Functional Skills as well as being aDevelopment Adviser for ACER (Association of Colleges in the Eastern Region)delivering bespoke functional skills training within the Eastern Counties. She alsoteaches functional and GCSE maths at a pupil referral unit in Ipswich.
Julia has also spent time working with City and Guilds developing their functionalskills qualifications, has authored for Heinemann and Braingames too. Prior tothis she was Curriculum Manager at Colchester Institute. She has also workedupon the Standards Unit materials, undertaken projects for the National Maths
Centre, NCETM and is currently the Maths Portal Manager for the OpenUniversity.
Bob ReadBob originally trained as a Special Needs teacher in secondary schools but inrecent years has worked extensively in the post 16 sector as a literacy subjectspecialist. He currently works as a Training and Development Adviser for ACER(Association of Colleges in the Eastern Region), supporting staff who offer Skillsfor Life and Functional Skills programmes in colleges of FE, adult and community
learning, private training providers, prisons and Young Offender Institutions.
