ObjectivesObjectives
1. Use functions like Sum and Average
2. Use a shortcut to compute the total for columns and rows

3.1 Introduction
• Spreadsheet allows you to enter formulae to perform calculations efficiently
• A ‘function’ is a built-in formula that comes with a spreadsheet program
• It is used in place of a long formula

3.1 Introduction
• The Sum function• In cell B10, instead of using the long formula
“=B3+B4+B5+B6+B7+B8+B9” to add up cells B3 to B9, a function “=SUM(B3:B9)” is used
The range B3:B9 indicates the
cells to be summed up

• The Average function• In cell B8, instead of using the formula
“=(B4+B5+B6)/3” to average up cells B4 to B6, a function “=AVERAGE(B4:B6)” is used

3.1 Introduction
• The Maximum and Minimum function• The Maximum function returns the maximum value
from a range of cells specified
• The maximum value in cells B4 to B10 is 60 and the Maximum function will find it

3.1 Introduction
• The Maximum and Minimum function (Cont’d)• The Minimum function returns the minimum value
from a range of cells specified• The minimum
value in cells B4 to B10 is 29 and the Minimum function will return this value

3.2 Copying Cell Contents
• To copy using click-and-drag
• Move the cursor pointer to the bottom-right corner of the cell to be copied
• When the mouse pointer changes to a plus sign, right click and drag to select the range that you want to copy to
• Release the mouse button at the end
• The cell content will be copied to the selected range

SummarySummary
1. A function is a built-in formula that comes with a spreadsheet program. It is used in place of long formulae.
2. The Sum function is used to find the total of the values in a range.
3. The Average function is used to find the average of the values in a range.
