What is TOURISM?

• A social, cultural and economic phenomenon related to the movement of people to places outside their usual place of residence pleasure being the usual motivation.



Defining Tourism

Demand-sided definitions focus:

the behavior of tourists and what they need

and seek

Supply-sided definitions focus:describe the product offered to tourists, what

the tourists experience



Tourism’s Unique Features

• Not exactly an industry nor a group of industries

• A grouping or part of many industries

• Consumers come to the product, wherein location is part of the product

Tourism – “the activities of persons traveling to

and staying in places outside their usualenvironment for not more than one consecutiveyear for leisure, business and other purposes notrelated to the exercise of an activity remuneratedfrom within the place visited” (UN WorldTourism Organization)



How do we distinguish tourism from

other forms of travel?

Is the nature of travel not routine and repetitive?

Is there any distinct temporary motivation for travel

other than employment and migration?

Is the travel undertaken in exercise of free will?

Does it create any demand on tourism

facilities, including collective or private

accommodation which are generally available for

short periods and not for permanent use?



Essential Requirements for Tourism

Time - as the hours for leisure increase so does the opportunity

for travel. Changes in work days or hours, school calendars will affect how and when people can travel.

Money - the majority of travel requires discretionary income.

Discretionary income is money left over after all monetary obligations (food, rent and taxes) have been paid.

Mobility - is the access to transportation (car, bus, plane, train

or ship) and the hours required to get to their destination.

Motivation - is the reason people travel. Motivations may

include seeking novelty, education, meet new people, adventure or stress reduction.

Forms of Tourism



Domestic Tourism – involving residents of the

given country traveling only within this country



Inbound Tourism – involving non-residents

traveling in a given country



Outbound Tourism – involving residents

traveling in another country



Internal Tourism – comprises of domestic and

inbound tourism



National tourism – comprises of domestic and

outbound tourism



International tourism – consists of inbound and

outbound tourism

- any person who travels to a country other than that in which

s/he has his/her usual residence but outside his/her usual

environment for a period not exceeding 12 months and whose

main purpose of visit is other than the exercise of an activity

remunerated from within the country visited .

-a visitor who stays at

collective or private

accommodation in the

country visited

- a visitor who does not spend the night in a

collective or private accommodation in the

country visited; this definition includes cruise

passengers who arrive in a country on a cruise

ship and return to the ship each night to sleep on

board even though the ship remains in port for

several days; also included in this group are

owners or passengers of yachts and passengers on

a group tour accommodated in a train.

Similar to the international

tourism, domestic tourism

also distinguishes the tourist

from the same-day visitor.



Domestic Visitors

Domestic Same-day visitorsDomestic Tourists

- any person regardless of nationality, resident of the Philippines and who travels to

a place in the Philippines other than his usual place of environment for a period

not more than 365 days for any reason other than following an occupation

remunerated at the place visited. Minimum distance of travel covered is between

municipality and with purposes of trip as any of the following – pleasure

(holidays, culture, active sports, visit to relatives & friends other pleasure

purposes), professional (events, official mission, business), other purposes (short-

term studies, health, pilgrimage).

-stays at least one night

and not more than 365

days in a collective or

private accommodation

in a place visited.

-a domestic visitor who does not spend even a

night in a collective or private accommodation at

the place of visit.-More commonly referred to as “EXCURTIONIST”.



What are tourism products?



Tourism Products

Consist of “the elements of the

trip, consisting of what s/he does on the

way to his/her destination and when

staying there, comprise the elements of the

tourism product” (Burkhart, 1981).
