What is prepress?

• Prepress refers to the preparation of digital files for printing

•

It comes after the design and pagelayout stage,

• However, prepress planning is crucial

during those stages to insure thatfiles print properly.

• and Prepress Software



What is preflight?

• Preflight derives from the preflightchecklists that airplane pilots gothough prior to takeoff

• Preflight is the process of checkingand double-checking your digital filesand hard copies supplied to your

commercial service provider

Why is preflight important?

Most service providers charge extra forsuch things as:

•

Converting RGB images to CMYK • Outputting laser proofs

• Creating bleeds

• Resizing images

• And more

Good designers

• Use a preflight checklist

• Double-check their preflight checklist

at least twice before submission to aservice provider

This avoids:• Printing and finishing delays

• Added expenses

• Check placement of cropmarks and bleed allowances

• 1/8" (0.125”) for bleeds is typical butcould vary by printer

Ready Artwork• Use a digital format preferred andaccepted by your printer

• Verify software version and platform,PostScript or PDF requirements

• If supplying camera ready artwork,prepare it in accordance with theservice provider's requirements

File Submissions: Font

• Send both screen and printer fontsfor Type 1 fonts

• Send the same format (Type 1, TrueType, OpenType) as used in the

document

• Send all the fonts used, includingfonts in EPS graphics (or, convertfonts in graphics to outlines beforeplacing in page layout application)

File Submissions:Graphics

• Send all graphics used, in the rightformat as required by the serviceprovider and at the proper resolution

for the output device (Typically300dpi)

• Convert graphics from RGB to CMYK

• Supply original source files forgraphics

• If providing images for scanning,mark them for cro in include

Protocol• Label disks with your name, address,phone number, and any job numbersupplied by the service provider

• When sending files on disk, use atype of media supported by theservice provider, properly formatted

for their platform, and using asupported compression method

• Include only the most current version

of the document to be printed and no

• Never send your only copy of a file toyour service provider

• Make backups

Keep copies of all:

• Application files

• Fonts

• Images

Include a filled out job sheet (your ownor one supplied by the printer) thatincludes:

• Your name

• Company name

Address• Phone number

• Job number

Hard Copy: Proofs

• Include composite laser or colorproof printed after ALL changes andcorrections

Check proofs to ensure they accuratelyreflect the:

• Graphics

• Fonts

• Bleeds

• Check that all colors separateproperly

• Indicate on separation proofs whichcolor/plate it is

• Label all proofs with your contactinformation
