Jose Joaquin Levi Lisondo is a coffee farmer from San Isidro El General in Costa Rica. He sells his coffee as Fairtrade through his local certified farmer co-operative, CoopeAgri.

As well as offering the security of the Fairtrade Minimum Price, Jose’s co-operative invested the Fairtrade Premium in a medical clinic. Farming can be a dangerous business and with little social security from the government, medical problems can end livelihoods.

‘I had an accident and had to go to hospital… the index finger of my left hand was amputated. But I was lucky because [CoopeAgri] could help me and also supported me financially.’

Our mission is a world where everyone who grows the products we rely on can make a secure living, support their family, and take control of their lives. It’s what anyone deserves, but it’s only possible if we reach more people like Jose.

You can help reach more people like Jose by raising money at a Fairtrade event. Read on for simple fundraising ideas that work.

The FAIRTRADE Mark is a powerful thing. Through fair prices, better wages and the Fairtrade Premium, Fairtrade is transforming the lives of 1.5 million people in 74 less developed countries around the world.

But we have a long way to go. While Fairtrade is providing a safety net to some farmers and workers, many more are still unable to get a fair deal for their crop, and are struggling to support their families.

Whatever you do to raise money, get creative and have fun. Here are five tried and tested ideas to get you going.

Coffee and cake morning This is the perfect chance for a catch up with friends or to make new ones. Hold your coffee and cake morning in a local community centre or church, or in your home, and get chinwagging.

Coffee connoisseurs: Add a twist by buying a selection of Fairtrade brands and hold a tasting session. Can your guests guess the country their coffee is from?

Dinner party Be the host with the most at a local community venue or in the splendour of your dining room. Ask for a donation to attend or have a collection box, and serve up a selection of delicious dishes cooked with Fairtrade ingredients. At a larger community event you could do a crowd pleasing favourite like curry.

Film night Mix entertainment and education at a film night. You don’t need a cinema, any space and a projector will do.

Many fundraising activities work really well as part of a larger awareness raising event. For example, if you’re planning a product tasting evening you could hold a raffle to win a selection of the products.

In 20 more, we want to make trade fair for everyone.

In a time of increasing uncertainty for the people who grow our food, Fairtrade can bring a more secure livelihood and hope for the future.

But we urgently need to reach more people and bring them a fair deal too.

Supporter Amy Ross, right, shares the secret recipe to a great evening of fun, fundraising and sharing Fairtrade.

The challenge was to host a dinner party, cook a delicious meal using Fairtrade ingredients and raise money to support projects that bring a fair deal to more people.

The first question was who to invite. I really wanted to get the word out and inspire some influential local people. So in addition to friends, family and a few colleagues, I also invited local MP Diane Abbott and food blogger Helena Smith (Eat Hackney). To my delight they accepted!

The next question was what to cook. I decided to keep it simple and go for dishes I’d made before, and use as many Fairtrade ingredients as possible, from the Tropical Wholefoods almonds guests nibbled on when they arrived, to the 100 percent Fairtrade banoffee pie for dessert.

It was a great success! The conversation flowed, the food disappeared, the guests mingled and everyone marvelled at the range of Fairtrade products. Guests were particularly interested in hearing about the project we were raising money for. And I was thrilled that by the time I was clearing away the dishes at the end of the night, we’d made close to £150!

In the coffee growing regions of west Kenya, traditionally the man of the household owns the land. This brings decision-making power and the earnings from the coffee bushes. It’s common for women to carry out the majority of the work, but receive no wage themselves and little say.

Fairtrade Africa is working with men to transfer ownership of some of the coffee bushes to their wives. This enables women to sell the harvested beans and earn an individual income for the first time. And evidence suggests they spend their income responsibly, to benefit the whole household.

This means:

• Women move towards more equal position in the household

• They can attend training to improve farming

• Women earn more money for their family

• More food on the table and more to spend on education

So far 300 women farmers have gained ownership of between 50 and 500 coffee bushes each. Fairtrade Africa is planning to bring these same benefits to another 150 women, as well as providing agricultural training and support in selling their coffee into local markets.

THE LEGAL StuFF Authorisation Private events don’t need authorisation. If your event is taking place in a public area you should inform the local police and council of your activities. If the council requires an authorisation letter from the charity, contact us on fundraising@fairtrade.org.uk

Keep cash at your event secure Use a lockable box and have two people count the money together.

Holding a raffle You should not need a licence as long as there are no cash prizes, you spend no more than £250 buying prizes, and the sale of tickets and announcements of results take place on the same premises. Contact your council for local regulations if unsure.

Sporting events Larger events open to the general public to join should have medical cover, for example St John Ambulance or the British Red Cross. You might also consider taking out public liability insurance or have indemnity forms for participants.
