Raising funds for an AV project may at first seem to be an impossible task. We understand the biggest worry for all

volunteers is the “Money Thing”. However, we have witnessed over 5,000 motivated individuals fly out on a plane

bound for the adventure of a lifetime. They know it’s possible…and so do we! We know YOU will feel a great

sense of achievement once you have taken ownership of your fundraising and reached your financial target.

Step oneStep one -- FIRST YOU NEED A PLANFIRST YOU NEED A PLAN

Every journey begins with the first step. A good place to start is the total amount you need to raise … so, break it down.

* The amount of spending money will vary hugely in terms of what activities you want to do and the country you are going to. Generally, work on a 1/3 increase in Africa and Latin America over Asia for spending money. Full details about activity costs are in our country specific Instructions.

Step twoStep two -- DIVIDE YOUR EFFORTS INTO THREEDIVIDE YOUR EFFORTS INTO THREE

We suggest you divide your target into three smaller targets and use different approaches:

1. Employment1. Employment 2. Fundraising events 3. Sponsorship2. Fundraising events 3. Sponsorship

You may find one method works better than others for you. Some of us are born entrepreneurial ‘Whiz kids’ and some of us need a little encouragement to discover our bartering talents.

1. Employment1. Employment

That means getting a job and working full time. Lots of volunteers actually hold down two jobs, working in shops, factories and fields during the day and bars, restaurants and clubs at night. Ok so it might not always be glamorous or high up the career ladder but raising your own funds will show future employers that you are hard working, independent and committed!

Question: How many months do you have until your departure? Simple sums will tell you how much you can earn dur ing this time.

£hourly rate x 8hr = daily rate£daily rate x 5 days = weekly rate

£weekly rate x 4 wks = Grand total for every month

From this basic sum you can make a plan for dividin g your efforts during the first part of your gap year.

Simple philosophy: If you are lucky enough to live at home with parents or guardians, your target will be achieved through simply saving rather than spending!

TOP TIP: Job agencies will always have some form of work to offer you. This means a brilliant, guaranteed, secondary source of income towards your target should you need it. Your freedom to work as much as you choose gives you every opportunity to succeed.

Page 5: Fundraising Pack (colour) · That means getting a job and working full time. Lots of volunteers actually hold down two jobs, working in shops, factories and fields during the day

Types of employment will vary hugely from the interest,

skills and fun perspective. From factory work to valuable work experience in a large multi-national company – all experience equals personal and character building development for you.

• Useful work experience in a large firm may be possible.• Retail, shop and store based experience.• Secretarial, computer or administration.• Hospitality based by waiting, bar and host positions.• Factory packers.• Garage and mechanic assistants.• Paint and decorators.• Labouring and gardening hands.• Theme park and activity centre instructors.• Baby sitting, home help, dog sitting or house sitting.

Page 6: Fundraising Pack (colour) · That means getting a job and working full time. Lots of volunteers actually hold down two jobs, working in shops, factories and fields during the day

Work may also be available in season• Farm labour, lambing, harvest.• Garden centre operatives.• Fruit and vegetable picking.• Marquee and event set-up, also consider UK based resources:

– Summer parties – www.hospitalityline.co.uk– Hospitality staff – www.stuckforstaff.com

• Summer hospitality/party events UK based:• Summer Jobs – www.summerjobs.co.uk• www.eFestivals.co.uk - festival news, info, tickets, reviews and photos• Glastonbury Festival – jobs – www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk• Edinburgh International Festival - www.eif.co.uk

• Summer camp child mentors.• Wedding helper – including photography businesses, overloaded in

the summer.

Ask in your local area and place adverts in newsagents to find employment. Read local papers for jobs and network with family andfriends for available employment. Make sure you are enthusiastic and ready to WOW at interviews; sort out your CV; get a decent bank or building society for a good interest rate.

These are limited only by your imagination . We have included examples and tips from those who have walked the path before you; we draw huge inspiration from many of them and think you will too.

A great example to aid your fundraising efforts is the brochure (see Appendix 7) produced by Charlotte Boig and Ollie Bjuko, as well as Becky Mellor’s fantastic efforts (see Appendix 5).

Please do share YOUR inspired ideas with us too – call or [email protected]

AV Vouchers towards your trip are now available – call the office for details +44 (0)1380 729009 and please see Appendix 6 for your

voucher details.

Top Tip: Become a local celebrity! YOU MUST get your local newspapers involved. They will offer you

great support and coverage in letting your local community know that you may well be seen walking the streets in wet suit and flippers

collecting money … its for a great cause.

See Laurence Norman in his local paper (Appendix 4).

The sky is not the limit when it comes to fundraising event madness …

3. Sponsorship3. Sponsorship

It’s a treasure hunt! Asking for money is a tough one, but if you don’t ask, you don’t get. There are many pots of gold out there waiting to be donated to a worthwhile cause, you just have to find them!

In the UK, there is a book called “The Directory of Grant Giving Trusts” published by the Charities Aid Found ation , It contains a list of businesses (local, national and International) that have provision for grants and scholarships to give to volunteer students. InNorth America there is the Foundation Directory . Both can be found in your local library.

Networking your contacts is often an unexpected source of donationhelp. Empty your brain onto a page, start with family, then relatives and finally expand it to friends. Work out who works where – and identify possible leads into companies and corporations. A past volunteer noted her Grandfather used to work for Cadburys, and a letter sent resulted in a generous donation of £500 towards her target. You could even try your local church or community centres.

Government funds may be available to you. Anthea and Sophie from Lancaster came up trumps after searching the web for help and received over £2000 EACH towards their target. Grants are available mainly for volunteer work in your home country, but the girls were successful providing they returned to share their experiences with youth groups and schools in a series of talks.

For every 50 letters you write, you may receive five replies and one will send you a donation so it’s slow work, but for the time it takes to draft a letter, copy it and send it out, its worth a shot. Writing letters can be daunting so we have attached an example for you as a starter (Appendix 3). It is a tried and tested example of success. Good Luck!

LEAN ON OUR SUPPORT THROUGHOUTLEAN ON OUR SUPPORT THROUGHOUT

We will offer you support and encouragement throughout your AV journey. All the information we share has been put together and developed from 18 years of experience. It is designed to encourage you to believe in your own abilities.

Belief. You can make it happen . We know you can make your gap year dream a reality. But it doesn’t much matter what we believe. DO YOU BELIEVE IN YOU?

Support. Advice for you from old volunteers . Please do talk to AVs (who have walked these very steps before you) and ask their advice on the most effective ways of raising funds. We can put you in touch with individuals near you – just pick up the phone and ask us for their contact details.

Finally … YOU ARE MADE OF AMAZING STUFF.You will discover through this part of the project, how hard working, disciplined and imaginative you can be. Achieving your target will clearly demonstrate your commitment to a chosen project as well as improving budgeting and finance skills; qualities which universities and future employers will be extremely interested in investigating. Let us know how your plans grow and we can feature you on the Website to spread the word and inspire others.

APPENDIX 1 APPENDIX 1 -- Auction of Promises Auction of Promises -- fundraiserfundraiser

Hannah raised £1300 from her auction of promises and here is how she did it.

“At the beginning of the night I explained to people what I was doing in my gap year and how volunteering works. I also put up posters and had some information at the back of the room as a display. I was really worried that there were only about 25 people there, but as you can see they were all very generous and everyone bid well. I had some nibbles on each table, and a table set up at the front displaying the items for auction. In the interval I played the AV DVD so people really got an idea of what I would be doing.”

Here is the list of the items I auctioned:Curry for six people £95 Irish Aran sweater £15Photo sitting £50 Aromatherapy session £50Guitar £40 Drum starter kit £40African drumming session £80 Drumming masterclass £50Bottles of vodka and whisky £20 Wine with holder and cookery £15Two strawberry cakes £10 A cake £13Black Lacoste bag £35 Three sessions babysitting £20Three hours of ironing £30 Presentation whisky set £10Greenhouse £15 Computer £10Children’s disco £85 Coarse fishing lesson £25Exercise bike £10 Cocktail set £40Tealights £15 Ornaments £5Princess gift pack £15 Bottle of ouzo £10Cosmetic bag £5 Salad servers £5Bracelets £5 Bird box £5Cream tea £15 Slave for a day £20Wine decanter £5 Two ½ days labour £80Two months Cannon membership £55

On top of this, people who couldn’t come along and who didn’t buy auctioned Items donated a total of £150.

Page 13: Fundraising Pack (colour) · That means getting a job and working full time. Lots of volunteers actually hold down two jobs, working in shops, factories and fields during the day

Alex made about £1600 from a big fundraising night, here’s how:“For the event we had a Halloween night and rented out our village hall until midnight. We sold nearly 100 tickets for it, so made £750 already.Mum went to court! … to get a bar license so we could make lots of money from drinks. Some friends in the village who helped organise the event, made loads of really good food and desserts. (We got some sausage meat at cost price from a local butcher and so made leaflets for them on the tables to let everyone know how generous he had been).

We had a band perform that were just starting out and wanted the publicity and did it for free. They were really good as well! We had a DJ to do music all night and we had a raffle with some great prizes donated by people we knew. I said something about where I was volunteering and why I had chosen to go with Africa & Asia Venture. It was an introduction to why the whole evening was talking place really.”

The big money maker was the Auction of Promises; here is the list of promises:• Garden makeover • Acoustic guitar and lesson• Two oven ready ducks • Book signed by David Nobbs• Portrait by a local artist • One black bag’s worth of ironing• Horse riding lesson • An airport taxi run• Babysitting • Day’s golf with instructor• Aromatherapy massage

“With a couple of drinks down them, people were more than willing to bid. At the end we even sold four ordinary candles for £28!! I also wrote a letter telling as many people as I could think of about what I was doing and asking them to support me in some way. “

DearMy name is*********************. I am ## yrs old and have just completed A levels/A degree at******************. I have secured a place in the AV team and will take part in a project based in Africa/Asia/Latin America, due to begin in January/May/September 20## . I am currently working hard to meet my fundraising goal for this opportunity. The purpose of the visit is to give my time; as a volunteer I will act as an assistant teacher in subjects such as English, maths, sport and other extra curricular activities in a rural primary/secondary school or as a volunteer I will be involved in conservation projects for local communities. Rather than simply making a financial contribution, volunteer work gives a hands-on experience and perhaps has a far greater reach into the developing world; AV project work creates the opportunity for me to do just that. As a friend to the developing world I am confident the experience will teach me invaluable life skills. Comparatively, my background has been a comfortable one and it is easy to take so much for granted. I believe it is important for me to give something back and, in so doing, gain a different perspective on life. Since I am funding my placement, I am gathering resources from many different areas, including working full-time/part-time/sponsored events and donations, and would be grateful for any contribution you are able to make to my final goal. Please contact Africa & Asia Venture (AV) if you would like any additional information - 01380 729009 www.aventure.co.uk

Thank you in anticipation of your kind help.Yours faithfully

I organised a band fundraising night at a local village

hall before all my friends left for university in

September. I was really lucky as my sister and my

dad are both in bands so volunteered to perform

for free. My family were really supportive and

we managed to sell well over 100 tickets before the

event at £7.00 for over 21’s and £5.00 for all my friends.

The night was really successful and I rose over £1000,

my parent’s friends were all extremely generous with

many of them giving me further donations on the

Night, or contributing to the raffle which helped me raise extra money on the night. I made a

little speech about what I would be doing in Africa and thanked everyone for their kind

support.

Before the event I also wrote to the local newspaper which gave the event some extra publicity

and wrote to other local charitable organisations asking them for their support. This led to my

getting a further £250 donation from Round Table, £250 from a local town trust set up for

young people, £100 from the Lions and £100

from Tangent. Its well worth writing a few letters

as it really doesn’t take very long and you might

be lucky like me and get a few responses. I have

offered to go and talk about my experience to

all the organisations that have shown their support

as a thank you for their generosity. I also held a

Virgin Vie makeup party at my house and raised

£100 from commission and selling raffle tickets.

Both the fundraising nights were hard work to

organise and required a great deal of support from

family and friends, but were also really fun. I was surprised at how generous people have

been. It’s definitely well worth the time and effort and all in all I’ve raised £1900

which has made a massive difference in helping me get out to Africa.
