 Caring Classroom

Community

I thoughtfully include community building ideas and activities into every professional learning. The participants know themselves, each other, and me at the beginning of the learning. We incorporate humor (never sarcasm) into the learning. My work represents the ethnic, personal, and learning diversity of the participants. All participants know I care deeply about them as a learner.

 Checking In and

Checking Out

I incorporate learner outcomes, essential questions, and assessments for learning. Learners are full participants in the assessment process. I focus on learning, realizing participants may need multiple attempts to demonstrate learning. I record and share data with participants. I provide exemplars of high quality work and participants can articulate what they need to do so their work reaches this level of quality.

 Challenge

I develop plans that require critical reasoning for all. Discrete facts are embedded in interesting problems. Every PL includes challenging tasks that require higher order thinking and that are achievable by all with appropriate scaffolding. I plan backwards as I design challenging tasks. I differentiate learning. I know how to create assessments that lead to transfer and transformation of knowledge to other settings.

Choice

I have planned backwards, am clear about goals, and incorporate choice in the professional learning. Participants play an integral role in the choices and assessment. Choice involves product, process, or content.

Collaboration I have included Stage I, Stage II and Stage III collaboration for my learners. I have one Stage III collaboration including a meaningful, challenging task. I have established group work norms and these norms are displayed in the classroom. I have taught participants how to work effectively in small groups and we regularly assess group skills. I organize the groups in advance, based on my knowledge of participants needs. Prior to collaboration I make sure each learner has a defined role and I have modeled the expected behavior.

Celebration Through planning backwards, I built into the PL opportunities for participants to celebrate hard work and know strategies for celebrating good work. I also know when I need to celebrate quietly with a participant. I intentionally build my instruction around success rather focus on errors. When possible, I contact participants with specific comments concerning what they are doing well.
