Fung Global Retail & Technology Attends New Lab Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony • Today, the Fung Global Retail & Technology team attended the ribbon-cutting

ceremony of New Lab, a multidisciplinary design, prototyping and advancedmanufacturing hub located at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The facility is part of anefforttobringtechnologyandmanufacturingjobsbacktoNewYorkCity.

• Building 128, a former machine shop for shipbuilding, has been renovated andtransformedintoNewLab,whichoffersatotalof84,000squarefeetofspaceto50companies.

• Tenant companies are engaged in leading-edge technologies in fields such asrobotics,nanotechnology,artificialintelligenceandlifesciences.

Today,theFungGlobalRetail&Technologyteamattendedtheribbon-cuttingceremonyof New Lab, amultidisciplinary design, prototyping and advancedmanufacturing hublocatedintherecentlyrenovatedBuilding128attheBrooklynNavyYard.TheeventwasattendedbylocalNewYorkCitygovernmentofficials,includingtheDeputyMayor,andmembersoftheCityCouncil,aswellasbypress.

Renovatingandopeningthefacility,whichishousedinabuildingoriginallyconstructedin1902forthepurposeofshipbuilding,wasafive-yearprojectinvolvingbothpublicandprivate entities. The result is a beautiful, multifunctional work space for growingcompanies that includes labs, cubicles, conference roomsand informalmeetingareas.ThefacilityispartofanefforttobringtechnologyandmanufacturingjobsbacktoNewYork City, and the government officials who spoke at the ribbon cutting expect thenumberofjobsattheBrooklynNavyYardtodouble,toabout15,000,by2020.

TheNewFacility

New Lab calls the newly renovated building “a cathedral of manufacturing—past,present and future,” and photos of the building’s high, vaulted ceilings support thatdescription. Thebuildingoffers 84,000 square feetof space foruseby50 companies.Thefacilityincludes:

• Eric Forman Studio, which creates interactive installations and responsivearchitecture.

• The Extrapolation Factory, an imagination-based studio for design-led futuresstudies.

• HoneybeeRobotics,whichdesignsandbuildsadvancedroboticsystemsfortoughenvironmentsinspaceandonEarth.

• Jason Krugman Studio, a studio that specializes in interactive, architectural LEDsystemsandpublicartworks.

• Macro Sea, which conceptualizes and builds interim-use projects in theenvironmentandconceptualrealms.

New Lab emergedfrom a 2011 visit toBuilding 128 by Co-Founder David Beltand the President ofthe Brooklyn NavyYard. (New Lab’sother Co-Founder isScottCohen.)Beltisareal estate developerandfounderofMacroSea, a real estatedevelopment firm.The visit led to thecreation ofpredecessorNew LabBeta Space in 2013(also located in theBrooklynNavyYard),and then to theopeningofNewLab in June2016.Thetwospaceshavereceivedatotalof$120millioninfunding.

TheBrooklynNavyYard

ThefirstfivenavalshipyardsinBrooklynwereauthorizedbyUSPresidentJohnAdamsin1801.Building128 intheBrooklynNavyYardwastheprimarymachineshopforeverymajorship launchedduringWorldWars Iand II, includingtheUSSArizona(whichwassunk inPearlHarbor). TheNavyYardwas closed in1966amid sweepingdefense cuts


andwastransformed intoan industrialparkovertheperiodof1969–1981.Starting in1987, theBrooklynNavyYardDevelopmentCorporationbegan todiversify the tenantbase,openingtheYardtooccupantssuchasfilmandtelevisionstudioSteinerStudios,greentenantsandNewLab.
