    FOREWORD

    This Indian Standard (Second Revision) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards after thedraft finalized by the Furniture Sectional Committee had been approved by the Civil EngineeringDivision Council.

    This standard was first published in 1967 and revised in 1977. In this second revision tests forperformance requirements of finish have been included. This revised standard also makesreferences to the recent Indian Standards for various types of materials allowed in the standard.

    This standard contains clauses 4.6,4.8,5.4,6.6,6.7and 6.8which call for agreement between thepurchaser and the supplier, to supply certain technical information at the time of placing orders( see alsoAnnex B ).

    A scheme of labelling environment friendly products to be known as ECO Mark is being introducedat the instance of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MEF), Government of India. The ECO

    Mark shall be administered by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under BIS Act, 1986 as perthe Resolution No. 71 dated 21 February 1991 published in the Gazette of the Government ofIndia. For a product to be eligible for ECO Mark, it shall also carry the Standard Mark of the BISbesides meeting additional optional environment friendly requirements.

    This edition 3.2 incorporates Amendment No. 1 (August 1992) and Amendment No. 2(January 1997). Side bar indicates modification of the text as the result of incorporation of theamendments.

    WOODEN TABLE TOPS SPECIFICATION

    ( Second Revision )

    1 SCOPE

    1.1 This standard covers the requirements ofmaterials sizes, construction and finish ofwooden table tops for office, domestic andindustrial use.

    2 REFERENCES

    2.1 The Indian Standards listed in Annex A arenecessary adjuncts to this standard.

    3 TYPES

    3.1 Wooden table tops shall be of the followingtypes :

    4 MATERIALS

    4.1 Wood Particle Board

    Wood particle boards required for themanufacture of wooden table tops shall conformto IS 3087 : 1985 and shall be of type FPT, that,is flat-pressed 3-layer type. Wood particleboards used for wooden table tops whichrequire suitable baking paint or enamel finishshall be manufactured with only BWR type of

    adhesive conforming to IS 848 : 1974. For ECOMark, the particle board shall conform to therequirements specified in IS 3087 : 1985 forECO Mark purposes.

    4.2 Veneered Particle Board

    Veneered particle boards used for manufactureof wooden table tops shall conform toIS 3097 : 1980. Both interior and exteriorgrades of veneered particle boards may be usedwhere the table tops are to be finished withair-drying paints or varnishes. Where suitablebaking paints, enamels or varnishes are to beused for finishing, only exterior grade veneeredparticle boards shall be used. For wooden table

    tops with decorative veneered surface, thedecorative veneered particle boards shallconform to IS 3097 : 1980 and the specifiedtimber shall be used for decorative faces, backsand lipping. For ECO Mark, the veneeredparticle board shall conform to therequirements specified in IS 3097 : 1980 forECO Mark purposes.

    4.3 Blockboard

    Blockboards used in the manufacture of table

    tops shall conform to IS 1659 : 1990 and shallbe of Grade II, if air-drying finishes areadopted; and Grade I, if suitable oven-dryingfinishes are adopted in the manufacture oftable tops. For ECO Mark, the blockboard shallconform to the requirements specified inIS 1659 : 1990 for ECO Mark purposes.

    4.4 Plywood

    Plywood used shall conform to IS 303 : 1989Specification for plywood for general purposes( third revision ).

    4.4.1 For ECO Mark the plywood shall conform

    to the requirements specified in IS 303 : 1989for ECO Mark purposes.

    4.5 Timber

    Any aspect of timber specified inIS 13622 : 1993 Indian timber for furnituresand cabinets Classification, shall be used inthe manufacture of wooden tables tops.

    4.5.1 For ECO Mark, only species of timber asspecified in IS 13622 : 1993 from sources otherthan natural forests such as timber fromindustrial and social forestry plantations,shade trees from tea and coffee estates, etc,shall be used for the manufacture of woodentable tops.

    4.6 Decorative Plastic Laminates

    Decorative plastic laminate used for surface ofType DP wooden table tops shall conform toIS 2046 : 1969 and shall be of mat finish orglossy finish as desired by the purchaser.

    4.7 Medium Density Fibre Board

    Medium density fibre boards required for themanufacture of wooden table tops shall conformto IS 12406 : 1988 and shall be of Interior gradeIGSB if air drying finishes are adopted andExterior grade EGSB, if oven-drying finishesare adopted. For ECO Mark, the medium

    density fibreboard shall conform to therequirements specified in IS 12406 : 1988 forECO Mark purposes.

    4.8 Rexine and PVC or other plastic clothrequired for surface of Type DC wooden table

    tops shall conform to the relevant IndianStandards and where no specification exists itshall be approved by the purchaser.

    4.9 Adhesives

    Adhesives used for joinery shall conform toIS 848 : 1974, or IS 851 : 1978 or IS 4835 : 1979.

    4.10 Wooden Screws

    Shall conform to IS 6760 : 1972.

    4.11 Wooden Dowel Pins and OtherHardware

    Shall conform to the relevant Indian Standards

    wherever they exist.4.12 Paint, enamel and varnish used formaking GP, GW, and DV Types of table topsshall conform to the relevant Indian Standards.

    5 DIMENSIONS AND TOLERANCES

    5.1 The overall dimensions of wooden table topsfor general and office purposes shall be as givenin Table 1.

    5.2A tolerance of 5 percent shall be permittedon thickness.

    5.3 Table tops for tables for general officepurposes shall be rectangular in shape and thetwo diagonals shall not vary in length beyond10 mm.

    5.4 Wooden table tops for domestic uses shallbe rectangular or of curved shapes asprescribed by the purchaser. In the later casethe purchaser shall provide drawing of the topalong with dimensional tolerances.

    5.5 Wooden table tops for industrial and specialuses shall be of thickness and dimensions asagreed to between the purchaser and thesupplier. Tolerance given in 5.2shall apply.

    6 FABRICATION

    6.1 Wooden table tops shall be made fromparticle boards, or veneered particle boards, orblockboards or plywood or MDF of types and

    grades as specified under 3 and with the

    provision of lipping given in 6.2 unlessotherwise specified, the thickness of the boardfrom which the wooden table top is made shallbe such that the finished table top shall havethe thickness of 20 mm with a tolerance of 5

    percent on thickness.6.2 Lipping

    Lipping shall be given to the boards on all thefour sides in any of the following manner:

    a) Teak wood Lipping This shall beexternally given either by glueing 6 mm to12.5 mm thick strip of seasoned teak woodto cover the full thickness of the table topor alternatively by providing a teak woodmoulding of 12.5 mm thickness cut with atongue which is glued and inserted into asuitable groove, cut in the sides of theboard. The fixing of the beading shall be

    done by application of the adhesiveconforming to the requirement givenin 4.8 under suitable pressure and/or useof screws or tacks.

    b) Commercial Wooden Lipping Lippingfor wooden table tops Types GP and GWmay also be provided of timbers otherthan teak wood but care shall be takenthat the timber is well seasoned, wellpreserved, and as far as possible matchesin colour and texture with the face of thetable top. This type of lipping may be oftwo types as given in (a), and shall be

    fixed in the same manner.c) Veneered Lipping The lipping may also

    be done by glueing a strip of veneer ofthickness not less than 0.5 mm or plywoodin thickness not less than 1 mm. Theveneered lipping may be of teak veneer forall types of boards or of commercial woodveneer for Type GP and GW boards, Theveneer or plywood strip shall be glued onas given in (a).

    d)Lipping of Decorative Plastic Laminates The lipping for wooden table top Type DPmay be of strips of decorative plastic

    laminate of thickness 0.8 mm to 1.4 mmand of design to match or contrast with thesurface of the table top and fixed on to thesides by use of adhesives as given in (a).

    6.3 Special lipping like moulded plastic stripsor mouldings based on PVC, PVA or laminatesshall be provided, if specifically ordered.

    6.3.1 The lipping shall be securely fixed, shallcover all the four sides, the joints at the cornersshall be matched, and the lipping shall beproperly finished to the same finish as the top.Where table tops are to have rounded corners,the lipping should be suitably arranged to cover

    these corners.

    6.4 Wooden table tops type DV shall be madefrom veneered particle boards of decorativetype with well matched veneered surface of thespecified timber. Usual decorative timber usedfor table tops of this type are teak wood and

    rosewood. The lipping of Type DV table topsshall be of the same timber as the decorativeveneered and shall match in colour, figure andtexture of the decorative veneered surface.

    6.5 Wooden table tops Type DP shall be madeby glueing a decorative high pressure laminatesheet of 0.8 to 1.4 mm in thickness and of therequired figure, colour and finish (matt orglossy) on to an underlayment of wood particleboard or veneered particle board or plywood orblockboard. The glue shall be uniformly spreadand the board pressed uniformly. Unlessspecified otherwise, the lipping on all the foursides shall be in accordance with 6.2(d) and thelaminated decorative surface shall extend to thefull width and the full length of the table top.

    6.6 Wooden table tops Type DC shall be madeas given in 6.5but instead of the surface beingof the decorative laminate, it shall be rexinecloth of the approved colour and texture or PVCcloth or similar cloth material. Lipping for thistype of wooden table tops shall be of colour andfinish as approved by the purchaser.

    6.7 Wooden table tops Type GP and GW shallbe made from wood particle boards or veneeredparticle boards, or blockboards or general

    purpose plywood in accordance with 6.2(a) or(b) or (c). The table tops shall be painted orotherwise finished to the customersrequirement. Wooden table tops for Type GWshall be made from base material bonded withType BWR of adhesives and of suitable timberswhich can take backing enamel painted andsuitably baked. Alternatively non-decorativeepoxy type of paint which gives a smooth hardwater-resistant washable surface may be used.

    6.8 If required, table tops may be supplied withsupporting partitions. In this case thepurchaser shall supply to the manufacturerdrawings, giving the position of suchframework. Dimensions, tolerances and methodof fixing. The backs of the wooden table topsshall be suitably painted or varnished or abacking sheet provided to balance the same asagreed upon between the buyer and the seller.

    7 SAMPLING AND TESTING

    7.1 Sampling

    The following scheme of sampling shall beadopted for tests :

    7.2 Tests

    Samples shall be drawn as given in 7.1 andsubjected to tests as indicated in 7.2.1to 7.10.

    7.2.1Dimensions

    The samples shall be checked to conform to thedimensions and tolerances specified in theorder as in 5.

    7.3 Construction

    The construction shall be checked forconformity to the particulars in the order andtype as in 3.

    7.4 Surface Finish

    The surface shall be checked to be smooth,uniform and free from any stain and warp.

    7.4.1 Glue Adhesion

    The adhesion of plastic overlay, rexine or otheroverlay, surface veneer and lipping shall bechecked by forcible separation at the glue linewith the use of a prising knife. The glue lineshould offer appreciable resistance to forcibleseparation and the opened surface should showsome adherent fibres.

    7.5 Loading Test

    The table top shall be supported on full lengthof the board of triangular edge supportsparallel to each other and 800 mm apart and tothe full depth of the table top. It shall then be

    loaded at the centre, 100 mm portion,uniformly by first putting on it a wooden batten100 mm wide and minimum 75 mm thick andfull length of the depth of the table top. Overthis shall be put suitable loads at the centre byeither a suitable loading machine or ironweight suitably increasing the load to amaximum of 500 N and in lots of 100 N. Theload shall be left for a period of 24 hours andremoved thereafter. The table top shall show:

    a) no sign of warp,

    b) no separation of surface paint or overlayor underlay, and

    c) no damage to the lipping.

    7.6 Resistance of the Surface to Dry Heat

    The surface of the wooden table tops Types DPand GW shall be tested for resistance to dryheat in accordance with IS 5807 (Part 1) : 1975.The minimum qualifying average rating shallconform to clause 8of IS 5807 (Part 1) : 1975.

    7.7 Resistance of the Surface to Wet Heat

    The surface of the table tops Type DP and GWshall be tested for resistance to wet heat inaccordance with IS 5807 (Part 2) : 1975 and the

    minimum qualifying average rating shallconform to IS 5807 (Part 2) : 1975.

    7.8 Resistance of Surface to Marking byOils and Fats

    The test sample surface of Type GP and GWshall conform to clauses 6 and 7 of IS 5807(Part 3) : 1971 when tested in accordance with

    IS 5807 (Part 3) : 1971.7.9 Resistance of Surface to Marking byLiquids

    The surface of the test sample of Type GP andGW shall be tested in accordance with IS 5807(Part 4) : 1975. The minimum qualifyingaverage rating shall conform to clause 8 ofIS 5807 (Part 4) : 1975.

    7.10 Type Test

    7.10.1Resistance of Surface to MechanicalDamage

    The surface of the test sample shall be tested

    for impact, cross-cut and scrape test inaccordance with IS 5807 (Part 6) : 1978. Therating shall conform to clause 5.3 of IS 5807(Part 6) : 1978.

    8 FINISH

    8.1 The wooden table top shall have a smoothfinish on the surface and the sides and shall bedelivered in a neat and dry form.

    9 ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FORECO MARK

    9.1 General Requirements

    9.1.1 The product shall conform to therequirements of quality and performance as

    specified in the standard.

    9.1.2 The manufacturer shall produce to BISenvironmental consent clearance from theconcerned State Pollution Control Board as perthe provisions of the Water ( Prevention and

    Control of Pollution ) Act, 1974 and Air( Prevention and Control of Pollution ) Act,1981 alongwith the authorization, if requiredunder theEnvironment ( Protection ) Act, 1986,while applying for ECO Mark.

    9.2 Specific Requirements

    The product shall conform to the specificrequirements given for ECO Mark underrelevant clauses of this standard.

    NOTE The manufacturer shall provide documentaryevidence by way of certificate or declaration to thiseffect to the Bureau of Indian Standards while applyingfor ECO Mark.

    10 PACKING

    10.1All wooden table tops shall be packedaccording to usual trade practice.

    11 MARKING

    11.1All wooden table tops shall be markedwith a suitable mark identifying themanufacturer, the type and the sizes of thewooden table top.

    11.1.1 The wooden table tops may also bemarked with Standard Mark.

    11.2 The criteria for which the product hasbeen labelled as ECO Mark.

    INFORMATION TO BE SUPPLIED BY THE PURCHASER

    B-1 BASIS FOR ORDER

    The purchaser shall supply the followinginformation to the supplier along with theorder:

    a) Type and size of wooden table top andtype of lipping, if any, preference beindicated;

    b) Whether additional supporting frame orbattens wanted and, if so, drawing of thesame giving position, dimensions andtolerances;

    c) Any fixtures wanted and, if so details ofthe same;

    d) Colour and finish;

    e) Whether alternative methods ofconstruction are required, and, if so,details;

    f) Type of packing desired;

    g) Whether any special shape is required;and

    h) Whether thickness other than specified inthe standard is required.

    Standard Mark

    The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the provisions of the Bureau of IndianStandards Act, 1986and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The Standard Mark onproducts covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been producedto comply with the requirements of that standard under a well defined system of inspection,testing and quality control which is devised and supervised by BIS and operated by theproducer. Standard marked products are also continuously checked by BIS for conformity tothat standard as a further safeguard. Details of conditions under which a licence for the use ofthe Standard Mark may be granted to manufacturers or producers may be obtained from the

    Bureau of Indian Standards.
