1.EVALUATING MY PERFORMANCE AT EACH STAGE OF THE DESIGN CYCLE

INVESTIGATIONI think I did a great job in the Investigation stage, because this whole design is based on the last furniture design we had and the design is focused on making improvements. My last design have many functions for example, lights, chair, reading area, bookshelves, stage desk and also information wall. However, the size of the furniture becomes as big as half of the swimming pool and the price is very expensive. The size of the design and the cost of the design becomes the biggest disadvantage of my furniture, so in my investigation I decided to cut the size and cost of my furniture. Mr. John, the clinic. had advised that he likes my idea of information wall, so I decided to create a small furniture combined with three functions only, desk, information wall, and chair. This time I tried to keep my furniture simple, and I want to use glass for my furniture at first. I setup interviews with Ms. Judith, the art teacher. to ask about her opinion about materials. She advised me that I can used acrylic sheet for my furniture. After 3~4 interviews with the art teacher, I finally came out a realistic design by myself. In this investigation, there is no case study, because the purpose of the investigation is to improve on the last design, not to create a new one. I focus heavily on the material study, because if we want to bring the design into real life furniture, I need to really focus on the “Cost” of the design. In the investigation stage I researched about all kinds of brand of LED lights, acrylic sheet and also wire. These three materials were make up my furniture. At last, I think I did a very good job in the investigation stage and there are enough information for me to make my design more realistic and fit to the society.

Design In my design stage I think I did a very amazing job. The improvement of the design went so well. Actually it all started in the term 2. After I finished the first furniture design I started to take the advise of Mr. John and take out the curve performance stage part in my gigantic first design and use it as a sample to improve on. I then change the curve shape of the performance stage into a chair and an information wall. Then I started to set up

many interviews to ask Ms. Judith for her professional art teacher’s opinion. Then I come up with many new ideas for example change the curve shape into waves and then I got an idea of DNA shaped information wall combined with chair. Ms. Judith gave me many opinions telling me which designs are not realistic. I even came up with a curve shaped information wall combined with chair, lights, desks, and also Eco friendly roof top garden! The design looks very cool and very function! However, it would be very expensive to build. At last, I finally came out the leave shaped furniture design with three function of chair, information wall, and also desk. The design was very simple but beautiful and it is also cheap and realistic to make. Thanks to Ms. Judith and the extra time I put in the long winter break my design had a unbelievable improvement.

Plan

Last time, my plan for the furniture design was totally failed, and this time I had learned from my own mistake. This time I have more experiences of using the machines and what I can used for my design. Last time one of the biggest reason of failure is lack of asking questions, and last time I was all making the product by myself without asking any advice from the teacher. This time before I start planning, I already had advice from the art teacher to use acrylic sheet. The Step by Step plan worked very well and all the steps I wrote are all very realistic. The timeline for my plan wasn’t that accurate, I thought I might spent 3 hours just cutting the acrylic sheet, however in reality I own spent 1.5 hours. There is one step that I was missing in my plan and that is to use the Wet and Dry paper to make the edge of the acrylic flat. This stage I spent 3 hours just to make the edge of the acrylic sheet flat. At last, even though timeline is not accurate, I still finished making the product 2 to 3 lessons earlier than the dead line. This means my plan still works very well.

CreateIn the create stage I think I did a great job, too. Most of the time everything went very well. In the create stage, I first draw on the acrylic sheet and then use the cutting machine to cut the acrylic sheet. At first, I though it would take more than 3 hours to finish cutting the acrylic sheet and then I found out it actually only take me 1.5 and cutting the acrylic sheet wasn’t as hard as I thought. After cutting, I used the wet and dry paper to flatten the acrylic and this process took me 3 classes! The next step I took was to use the hot air gun to shaped the acrylic sheet. Shaping the acrylic sheet is a little hard because you can put the hot air gun to close to the acrylic sheet or else it would create bubbles! After shaping the acrylic I started to use the glue gun to glue the sheet together, however it wasn’t look nice, so Mr. Julian want me to take it off and glue it again. When I take it off and glue it again the acrylic sheet had been damaged and the transparency of the acrylic product had



decreased. At last, Mr. Julian advised me to spray the acrylic sheet into green color and make it looks more like a leaf. I think my whole create stage went very well and there was only few small problems I had met and they can easily be fixed. I finished the product early and this proves both my success in plan stage and creation stage.

EvaluateI think I did a great job in my evaluation stage. I had included evaluate the strength and the least successful points of my design and also the evaluate against the Specifications. I had evaluate honestly and effectively. I think I did the impact on the environment the best. Actually it is true that my furniture design is to send some positive messages telling people in our school to go our doors and interact with nature, however, the cozy furniture that I designed would let people want to stay indoor more. The lights and materials of the furniture would also cause negative impacts on the society. At last, I still not very satisfied with the design. I think next time I want to create a real “Environmental Interactive” furniture. For example, change the information wall into a 3D small garden,and change the furniture from acrylic into bamboo, and make the furniture outdoor! At last, I think I did a great job in evaluate the furniture and I have put both my opinions and classmates’ opinions in this evaluation to make it more objective.

VThe product had meet the main function of the product which is for people to sit, read information and also let people can write on the desk. These three main function my design had all meet them perfectly.

Which size fits the Da Vinci building and how can I make it flexible with different sizes?

VThe product had meet the size I designed for the furniture and I had successfully cut down the size of the furniture into 1/8 of the last design and this helps the furniture to fit into the building well. I had made three different sketches with three different sizes, it is still possible to make the design into different sizes.

Is the acrylic environmental friendly, and cheap, and also safe enough?

XI had too admit that I changed the material from wood to acrylic and this make the furniture less environmental friendly. The reason I change the material to wood is to reduce the cost of the furniture and acrylic has more flexibility to make curve and looks more beautiful.

Which shape fits into the building the most? V

The furniture’s shape had fit into the theme of the Da Vinci Building. The Da Vinci Building’s design is for technology and science classes. My furniture design is in the shape of leaves which means the combination of nature science and the art of furniture.

XMy furniture fits most of the user requirements. The materials are strong enough, safety design, and also convenient information wall. However, there is one user requirements I didn’t meet and that is comfortable design. After I changed the materials into acrylic sheet and decrease the size of the furniture, I think my furniture become less comfortable. I delete many comfortable design in my less design

VI have successful develop and carefully planned how to power source is going to be in my furniture design, and in my case study I had studied a range of different LED lights bulbs and also wires.

How can I design a ergonomics chair for my furniture?

VI had successful developed the chair and the chair had fit the ergonom design well. The curve shaped of the information wall had perfectly fit people’s back when they sit.

Does the furniture fits the budget? V

The cost of the furniture had been decreased to less than 1/10 of the original design. The furniture’s cost had been very successfully reduced. It is because the success of changing the material of the furniture and reduce the size of the furniture.

How can I lower the size and cost for my furniture, and make it possible to be batch?

VAfter I success cut down the price and the size of the furniture, it is very possible for the school to produce more than one. ms. Judith said to me when I was in the interview with her, “She said it is possible to make a couples of these.” Therefore, I think I had successfully increase the production levels.

How can I make the design safer and unbreakable?

VMy furniture had successful meet the requirements which is to be safe and unbreakable. In my new design, I had reduced all the sharp angles and make the furniture round in the edges. I choose the acrylic instead of glass to make the furniture unbreakable and also scratches proof.

How can I make the design more environment friendly? x

I must admit that my furniture is not very environmental friendly at all. The last design I used wood and wood is much more environmental friendly than acrylic. However, because I want to cut down the price and insert the LED light bulbs, so I decided to use acrylic. Another thing is that there is a time I want to add the Eco friendly garden in my design, however it would make my design a lot bigger and the cost would also increases a lot, so I decided not to add it.

3. The Successful Points of my design:

I think my design is has many successful points after I tried to redesign from my last original design. The biggest successful points of my design is that my new design becomes very realistic and I had consider a lot of real life problems what my furniture



would meet if I want to make it in the real life. I had successfully cut down the size of the original design and also the cost of the original design. This time I had learned and I decided to make the design simple, but beautiful. I used the idea of the curve and the information wall from my last design and then I changed it into a leaf shaped informational wall combined with desk and chair. This makes the furniture use the space more efficiently. The sharp angle of the original design had all changed into curves, and the design is now become more safe to the kids. I choose the acrylic sheet with high transparency and also a little green color so the LED lights can make the design looks cool and fashionable, and I believed the appearance of the design is now fitting better with the Da Vinci Building.

4.Least Successful Points of the design:There are still some least successful points of the design. After I redesign and tried to improve the original design, actually there is some parts of the design is not as good as original one. Because of the reality, I need to cut down both the price and the size of the design or else the original design would be half size of the swimming pool!After I reduced the size, the furniture has less functions. I delete the reading area, performance stage, round chair sofa, bookshelves of the original furniture design. There are only three functions left, information wall, desk and chair. And there is another disadvantage of my new design, and that is the furniture becomes less environmental friendly. I want to cut down the price of furniture and at the same time I want to add lights in my furniture design to make it looks nice and cozy, so I choose high transparency acrylic sheet instead of the of the environmental friendly wood. In my new furniture design the least successful points are less environmental friendly and less function.

5.Modifications/ Improvements of the Product:I think even though my furniture is now look very modern and cool, and the leave shape of the furniture means people should get closer to the nature. The furniture is now very realistic and the cost and the size of the furniture is now very reasonable. The LED lights



in the furniture creates a very beautiful scene of the furniture. However I think there are still a lot of things I can still improved on. I think the furniture is all made up by man-made materials and even though it is in the shape of the leave, but I still think it is not environmental friendly at all, and this is not what I really want. I saw students in our school spent everyday in the classroom using laptops, and there is less and less environmental interactions between students and the environment. Next time if I can redesign the furniture I would make it not only “Environmental Friendly” but also “Environmental Interactive”. Planets and the trees in the school are not only there for us to “view” and I don’t like planets surrounded with concrete. I think it would be better for us to make interactions with the nature. This idea of “Environmental Interactive” would be the next important factor that I want to add it into my design.

7. The impact on the society:I think the furniture would have a very positive impact on the society. It is not only create an amazing place for people to exchange the information on the information wall, and people can sit and enjoy their time. The information wall would help the Sinarmas World Academy community to have a better communication, and not only in Power School on the internet. I think it is very important to have information wall for each building to let people or visitors to know the latest information in the school. The beautiful design of the furniture also helps others to understand how art can connected to our daily life. I decided to design the shape of the furniture into a leave shaped, because I believed people should go outdoors and have fun in nature! I saw students in our school would rather sitting on the chair and on their cellphones all the time even in break! I found out students in our school are so addicted to their cell phones and computers and that resulted them become more and more isolated with the nature. I think by designing the shape of the leave would help all members in the SWA community knows that the importance of the nature and try to go out doors!

8.The impact on the environment: I believed the furniture would have both positive impacts and negative impacts on the environment. The biggest positive impact is that my furniture is sending a very important message to the school, telling everyone the importance to interact with nature. I used the leave shaped information wall to represent “There is a lot of knowledge we can learn from the nature.” I want people in our school to put down the laptops for a second and walk out doors and take time to enjoy the outdoor activities or even the beautiful view in our school. I use my furniture to send the message of importance of nature and this is the positive impact on the environment. However, the negative impact of my furniture is that my furniture is designed by using acrylic. Acrylic is actually not a very environmental friendly material and my furniture is actually going to be indoor! I use lights and acrylic



and try to make a cozy place indoor, however this would make people want to stay inside of the building rather than being outside interact with nature. Besides, my furniture design also contain LED lights to make it look more beautiful, and the power source would increase the electricity use in our school and creates more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere causing Global Warming which is opposite to the name of my furniture “The Breathe of the Nature.”
