Calfax® anionic surfactants are alkyldiphenyl oxide disulfonic acids and their salts. The bi-aromatic and disulfonated structure of Calfax® makes them unique and superior to conventional monsulfonate surfactants, because of the two sulfonate groups on the Diphenyl Oxide (DPO) backbone providing greater electrolytic strength, with increased solvation and coupling action.
The R and X groups in Pilot Chemical’s Calfax® product line range as follows:
* R = Alkylate Chain; X : H = Acid; Na = Salt
• Alkylated DPO provides excellent hydrophobic interaction and interfacial adsorption
• Flexible ether linkage allows variable distance between the sulfonate groups, allowing increased electrostatic interaction and stabilizing effect

Calfax® products in an emulsion polymerization application deliver:

Due to excellent thermal stability, Calfax DB-45 and Calfax 16L-35 are favorably used in emulsion polymers for plastic modification or other applications at elevated temperatures.
Calfax® 16L-35 gives the best particle nucleation efficiency or smallest particle size among all Calfax® products. Calfax® 10L-45 is particularly used in chloroprene latex and other rubber latexes, the surfactant can be eliminated by coagulation.
Calfax® 6LA-70 and Calfax® 6L-45 utilizes a linear low carbon chain, which provides excellent hydrotroping, coupling, and rinsability. These surfactants are best suited as solubilizers and wetting agents.
