 April Session Highlights Mental Health in Children 

On Monday, April 5, FUSE families will have an opportunity to learn more about the mental health issues facing children and teenagers today from Dr. John Constantine from Hancock Counseling and Psychiatric Services.  Mental health professionals are becoming increasingly aware of the incidence of mental illness in young people. While the majority of illnesses, such as mood, anxiety and thought disorders, are still found to first manifest symptoms between the ages of 15 and 25, more children than ever are being accurately diagnosed at much younger ages.  Dr. 

Constantine will talk with families about mental health disorders in children and teens, and the treatments that work.     The meeting will be held on Monday, April 5, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Harris Elementary in Greenfield.  Child care is available on site for the April meeting by reservation.  Please make your child care reservation by Friday, April 2.  Reservations are required  for child care so we can plan enough providers.  Use our online reservation system at www.fuseinc.org or call Denise at 317‐462‐9064. 

May Evening of Celebration  

We hope you will join us on Monday, May 3, from 6:30 to 8:30 at Central Indiana Power for our annual Evening of Celebration.   The celebration is a night to recognize the volunteers and donors who have helped FUSE experience success the previous year.  A pasta dinner will be served at 6:30, followed by the program at 7:00.   

We have a great night planned, and it will kick off with a performance by Destiny, a color guard that you will never forget.   We are also pleased to have Tony Williams, leader of the RHI Indiana Pacers Wheelchair Basketball team, as our keynote speaker.  Tony 

was just 15 years old when he was shot in the back and paralyzed in a gang‐related shooting in Chicago.  Hear Tony’s riveting story and learn how the discovery of wheelchair basketball helped him turn his life in a new direction.  Tony recently authored a book called Peace in My Dreams, which will be available  for sale that evening.  You won’t want to miss his story of hope and perseverance.

It is hard to believe that so much has already happened with FUSE in 2010 and we’re just a few months into the year.  Recently FUSE had two very successful events, the Strike a Difference bowl‐a‐thon and the Inspiring Abilities Expo. I'd  like to offer a special thank you to all the sponsors, guests, vendors, speakers and volunteers who attended these events.     I would like to encourage everyone to come out to the next big event,  the FUSE Evening of Celebration where we will recognize the 2009 volunteers and donors who have helped FUSE along the way.  This year's event will be held at Central Indiana Power and will feature both dinner and a motivational speaker.  See the front page of this newsletter for the details.  Don’t forget to reserve your seats.  Golfers will want to mark their  calendars for Wednesday, July 14, to attend the David Borgmann Memorial Golf Outing held at Arrowhead Golf Course  in Greenfield. Come on out for some good food, good prizes, and good 

times while raising money for FUSE.  More information is available  on page 4.    Being a FUSE director and now the board president has been one the most fulfilling experiences of my life. Currently we have  a few openings on our Board of Directors. I encourage anyone that is interested in one 

of these rewarding positions to contact us for a  board member interest survey.  The survey will help us determine if you have particular skills or interests that meet a current need on our board.  At the current time, we have needs in the areas of business development, fundraising, marketing and entrepreneurship. Other skills may also be a valuable addition to the board, so don’t hesitate to contact us if you may be interested.

Golf Outing to Benefit FUSE 

FORE! 

It’s that time of year. The 8th Annual David Borgmann Memorial Golf Outing will be held on July 14th this summer at Arrowhead Golf Course in Greenfield.  In the last seven years combined, the tournament has raised over $53,000 for FUSE. 

 The registration fee per player remains at the bargain price of $60. The tournament will be a single shotgun starting at 1:00 p.m. We will have lunch before the round beginning at 11:30 a.m.  Free range balls will be available so be sure to come early to eat and warm up!  As usual we’ll have a terrific raffle, closest to the pin/longest drive/longest putt contests. Again this year we will pay for the 1st and 2nd place teams based on score, but we will award $100 cash prizes to two teams drawn out of a hat so that no matter what your team shoots, you have a chance to walk away with some money in your pocket! If you don’t play, we always need volunteers to help the day of the event with lunch and registration.

Research: Problem Solving for 

Mental Health Issues

About Special Kids (ASK)   

Parent Research Study: Problem Solving for Caregivers of Children with Mental Health Issues Indiana University School of Nursing is researching problem‐solving intervention for caregivers of children with mental health problems.  This study is designed to examine the intervention and determine ways to improve it.  Primary caregivers of a child with a mental health issue are invited to participate.   

To qualify, the child must:  • Have received mental health services in the community within the past year 

• Have lived at home for at least 20 of the past 24 months • Be between the ages of 11 and 16 years when beginning the study 

  If you apply, you will be asked some questions to see if you qualify and, if you do, an informed consent form will be mailed or given to you for you to sign and return.   Qualified candidates will be assigned to either the intervention group or a wait‐list control group.  They will complete a survey that will take about 1 hour, and participate in a 1‐hour problem‐solving intervention training session.  There will also be 8 weekly problem‐solving interventions by telephone.  Candidates will be contacted by telephone 3 to 4 times for data collection during the study.   If you qualify, you will receive a gift card for your participation.  You will also learn about problem solving, receive individual attention from a mental health professional, and help improve the lives of kids with mental health issues and their parents.   For more information or to apply, contact Janis Gerkensmeyer, PhD, RN at 317‐278‐4896 or  jgerkens@iupui.edu

The U.S. Census Bureau is issuing a call to action for every resident of our nation to be counted for the 2010 Census.  The census is a count of everyone residing in the United States and is required by law to be conducted once every 10 years.  All U.S. residents 

must be counted—people of all races and ethnic groups, both citizens and non‐citizens.    Why should you 

respond to the census?  There are LOTS of important reasons.  Accurate census data help determine congressional representation, grant funding and guide local decision‐makers on where to build new roads, hospitals, housing, schools and more.  Every year, the federal government distributes more than $400 billion to state, local and tribal governments based on census data. Community planners and governments also rely on census data to determine the need for social services and funding, including funding for critical social services accessed by families raising children with disabilities.  For each person who is missed in the census, the community loses approximately $4000 in federal funding to support these critical community needs.  With only 10 questions, the 2010 Census questionnaire is one of the shortest questionnaires in history and takes just 10 minutes to complete.  By law, the Census Bureau cannot share an individual’s census questionnaire responses with anyone, including other federal agencies and law enforcement entities.  So, when your census form arrives, remember to “Take 10” to fill it out and send it in!  Our community counts on your participation. 

Census Helps Determine Funding  A Guide to Medical Debt 

The following is the introduction to a very helpful guide called Your Medical Bills:  A Consumer’s Guide to Coping with Medical Debt..  You can access the full guide online at   http://www.familiesusa.org/assets/pdfs/coping‐with‐medical‐debt.pdf.  If you are one of the millions of people who are struggling to pay medical bills, you should be aware of the steps you can take to reduce or manage your debt. If you owe money to a hospital or medical provider, do not ignore your bills. It will be harder to straighten out billing mistakes or get financial assistance if you wait. Making timely payments will also help you avoid further debt, damage to your credit score, lawsuits, and “garnishment” (deductions from your wages or bank account). But, if you cannot pay anything right now, you may be able to get financial assistance, and you should see if your provider will agree to wait before charging interest or sending your debt to a collection agency.  

This guide describes some steps you can take to reduce your payments. It will also help you learn about your rights.

iPods as Assistive Technology  Beth Waite, a Speech‐Language Pathologist and Assistive Technology Specialist, will be holding two informative workshops in Indianapolis to teach parents and professionals how to turn iPods or other mp3 players into assistive technology tools for students with disabilities.   These sessions will be from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Lawrence Township Library, 7898 N Hague Road, Indianapolis.  Registration fee is $40 per session.  April 19 ‐ iPods for AAC (Augmentative and alternative communication)

Registration is open for the Franklin Township Lead The Challenge (LTC) Softball League.  The registration deadline is Wednesday, March 31, 2010.  LTC was organized in 1997 to give children and young adults ages 6‐18 with various physical and cognitive disabilities the opportunity to participate in softball, gain confidence in themselves, and make new friends.  The league consists of four teams that play on two diamonds at Wanamaker Elementary School softball fields on Sunday afternoons at 1 pm.   The season starts Sunday, April 25 and goes through June 27.    Everybody hits (no matter how many pitches it takes!) and everybody circles the bases. Peer players are assigned to each player so they

Special Olympics Hancock County Is Driven To Win 

The wheels are turning, as Special Olympics Hancock County prepares for the 41st annual Summer Games on June 4th , 5th , & 6th, in Terre Haute, Indiana.  Practices are set to begin in April as each athlete works their hardest to fine tune their sport of choice from bowling, volleyball, aquatics, and track & field so they can give their all in competitions against other county athletes in the state at Summer Games 2010.  While most athletes love to win, it isn’t about winning or losing with Special Olympics.  It is about the teamwork, the sense of pride and the hard work of doing the best that they can in each sport.  These athletes are truly, very “special”.  Special Olympics Hancock County is operated entirely by volunteers that provide free, year‐round, sports training and competition for anyone with intellectual disabilities that is at least 8 years of age.  Sports that are currently being offered include: aquatics for swimmers and non‐swimmers, track & field, 

basketball, bowling, golf, softball, volleyball, equestrian, bocce and ice skating.  The Hancock County program is a non‐profit organization funded through private donations and fundraising projects throughout the year.  Fundraising and donations pay entry fees, purchase equipment, rent facilities for practicing and buy uniforms for all the sporting events.  If you or someone you know might be interested in Special Olympics, there is a niche for you here in Hancock County…whether you’re an athlete, a volunteer, a family member of an athlete, a board member, coach, sponsor, donor or an interested community member wanting to make a difference.  Please contact the county coordinators, Teresa and Thomas Cook at 317‐861‐9316 or TTCook@msn.com if you would like additional information.

  Save on  taxes Save the environment Help our community. Donate your used consumer electronics  FUSE is conducting a recycling fundraiser. There’s nothing to buy. We are simply asking you to protect the environment by donating personal electronics you no longer use or need.  We can accept cell phones, inkjet cartridges, laptop / notebook computers (Pentium II models or less NOT accepted), iPods, mp3 players, digital cameras, digital video cameras, GPS devices, e‐book readers, radar detectors and graphing calculators. Your used item(s) may be tax deductible and will be recycled in accordance with EPA regulations or refurbished and sold. 100% of the proceeds will help fund programs for families raising children with disabilities.   Please bring your recyclable items to the FUSE meeting each month or contact us to arrange a drop off.  We greatly appreciate your support!   Contact:  Denise Arland at 317‐462‐9064 or email darland@fuseinc.org
