Future Internet Research and IPv6
Till C. Lech, Senior Advisor VERDIKT
What will the Future Internet look like…?
??
The Future Internet will have…
A considerably higher transmission capability
A computational capacity and performance that clearly will exceed what we have today
Wireless access everywhere
A great number of different digital objects and electronic devices connected
Integrated security mechanisms at all levels and adaptive tools and services
The Driving FI Trends in VERDIKT
Background for topics
Social Networks, Internet of Things and Mobile Internet are identified as three of the most significant forces behind the Future Internet.
All topics have several imminent challenges within a number of special fields where Norway has, or should have, substantial competence.
The topics are important for the development of a competitive industry and will have considerable social impact.
At the same time the topics represent some of the most central challenges within ICT as we are facing a society where everything and everybody are increasingly dependent of ICT
VERDIKT – National strategic ICT-research programme Annual budget (2010): 170 mill NOK (21 mill €)
- Competence – educate researchers, build research competence
- Knowledge – research results relevant for society and industry
- Innovation – and value creation driven by ICT-research
- Status: Total project volume: 1,5 mrd. NOK (186 mill €)
VERDIKT funding: 780 mill. NOK (96 mill €) 100 research projects / 145 PhD-students / 45 post
doc.
“Core Competence and Value Creation with ICT in the international forefront”
VERDIKT invests in Future Internet
NOK 200m (25m EUR) – projects started May 2010 Social networks – healthcare and welfare, democracy and public services, game industry
Internet of things – energy efficient radio communication, near field communication systems/RFID, sensor networks
Mobile internet – mobile applications, seamless systems, cloud computing
NOK 150m (20m EUR) in 2011 Call Innovation Projects (ca 70m)
Researcher Projects (ca 80m)
Building on Norway’s ICT Strengths and Advantages
Industrial & technological presence in key ICT fields Telecommunications and mobile services
Advanced instruments / micro systems
Software engineering for services and embedded systems
Capacity to draw on multiple disciplines Ability to transform technological progress into innovations
The intersection between Internet of Things and Mobile Internet has resulted in a focus on “Smart Cities”
EU spending on FI research in FP7 ICT since 2007: Networks of the future: 540m€
Software, Services, Cloud Computing: 300m€
Internet of Things: 100m€
Total: ca 7,3bn NOK
…and even more on Security, applications, hardware etc…
Stepping up the game: European investment in Future Internet Research
Tying it all together: The Future Internet Public Private Partnership
Launched in 2010
300m€ over 4 years for research, roll-out and deployment of FI-technology
Utilisation of EC-funded R&I and national initiatives
Guided by the input of Europe’s leading industrial stakeholders
So, what about IPv6, anyway?
Unique adressability of «things» in IoT, and devices in Mobile Internet requires a bigger address space
Emerging technologies like e.g. 6LoWPAN in sensor networks or smart grids are IPv6!
Social Networks as sand box for deployment and spreading of IPv6 (e.g. in the «IPv6 over social networks» facebook app)
Difficult to build tomorrow’s internet while struggling with yesterday’s infrastructure technology.
Conclusions
The Future Internet is a top priority in Norwegian and European ICT Research Funding
Europe and Norway are dependent on cutting edge telecom infrastructures for keeping momentum in innovation and value creation
IPv6 roll-out is one of the prerequisites for unleashing the innovation potential of Norway and Europe
