DECATUR - Professional athletes hope tomake their debuts a memorable one.Few do it in the auspicious mannerJennifer Song did when she shot a final-round 61 at Hickory Point Golf Club fora runaway victory in the 2010 LPGAFutures Players Championship.
In a remarkable display ofshotmaking accuracy and almostunbelievable putting skill, the 20-year-old broke the tournament record witha 19-under-par total and a six-shotvictory .
Even a year later she can hardlybelieve what she did in her pro debut.“Honestly, I don’t know what I wasdoing out there. I was just playing oneshot at a time and trying to focus on thepace of the putts. It was just likemagic,” she said.
It was indeed magic. Many athletesstrive mentally to reach a zone wherethey are relaxed and performing theway their training has taught them. Theconcentration level is so strongeverything else is blocked out. Everyathlete hopes to attain that kind offocus but rarely does.
Song admitted that she was in thatkind of zone. “I felt like I could makeevery shot and drain every putt. It wasa lot of fun,” she said.
The 9-under-par final round was apersonal best and the winning marginwas a tournament record. The victoryenabled the former amateur and collegephenom to follow in the footsteps ofLorena Ochoa and Vicky Hurst whomade their professional debuts asuccess by winning Futures events atHickory Point.
“It’s definitely a great honor,” Songsaid, immediately following hertriumph. “Lorena is my role model. Ihave always looked up to her.Following in her path is the greatestpath I could follow.”
Securing her place in the hearts of
many Decatur residents was anannouncement she made after acceptingher trophy last June. Following throughon a promise to her parents, Song saidshe was donating a third of her $17,500winning prize money to local charities. One of those was to the Big Brothers,Big Sisters of Central Illinois, the Boysand Girls Club of Decatur and theLPGA Junior Golf Program under thedirection of the Decatur Park District.
She said she was doing it for thechildren who do not have the support

she received from her parents. The announcement brought tears
from the fans and tournament officialswho were on hand for the trophypresentation. Chris Olsen, director ofcommunity and government Relationsfor Tate & Lyle, sponsors of the Futuresevent in Decatur, said, “She just didn’timpact the Decatur community with fourdays of good golf, she’s managed tomake a lasting impact that transcendsthe tournament,” he said.
The four days of golf in which everyround was in the 60s despite troublingweather conditions will go down as oneof the most memorable in tournamenthistory. Many of the former championshere, such as Ochoa and Hurst, havegone on to become fixtures on the LPGATour.
Making an impact on that tour hasn’tbeen as easy for Song, who turned proafter two seasons at the University ofSouthern California in which sheattained All-American status each time
and being selected to play for the UnitedStates in the Curtis Cup teamcompetition. A former U.S. Amateur andU.S. Women’s Public Links champion, she finished in a tie for 13th in the 2009U.S. Women’s Open as an amateur.
As an LPGA rookie, she said in arecent interview she was finding itdifficult to find the kind of consistencyshe’s used to having. “I’m used toplaying in a competition every week. The tour schedule is such that you don’tplay every week,” she said.
Although she did well in her firstLPGA event in Australia this season, shesaid not being able to play in everytournament because of her rookie statushas been slightly frustrating. “We justhave to keep practicing and try to fightthrough it,” she said.
With her background of success andmental toughness, few doubt that Songwill reach the level of success she expectsfrom [email protected]

For more than a quarter century, the Futures Golf Tournament andcharity have gone hand in hand.
While the figures may be modestcompared to some national charitablefundraisers they still register in a largeway for the local charities who havebenefited over the years. Just ask thelikes of leaders with Big Brothers/BigSisters, the Boys and Girls Club ofDecatur and the LPGA Junior Girls Golfprogram, who were the recipients of lastyear’s tournament winner JenniferSong’s generosity.
Song donated one third of her$17,500 winnings to local charities, resulting in those three organizationseach receiving for nearly $2,000,producing a hefty boost to their budgetsduring the post recession era wheneveryone seemed to be tightening theirbelts.
It was a gesture hailed by one and allin the community and prompted ChrisOlsen, director of community andgovernment relations for Tate & Lyle tosay it may have been a determiningfactor in the company continuing itssponsorship for this year’s tournament.
He said there were two factorscontributing to the feeling the 2010tournament was a success, Song’sgenerous donation and the obviouseffort of Futures Tour players to expresstheir appreciation to sponsors, volunteers and community memberswhile they were in Decatur.
“Jennifer’s gesture was the capstoneof a number of different things that
happened with the players,” he said.“We felt there was so much interactionby the players and having the playersmarket the tour and the event was a keyelement in what we were seeking.”
Tournament Director CindyDeadrick-Wolfer said the recipients ofcharity offerings this season will bePartners In Education, the HeritageBehavioral Health Center, BigBrothers/Big Sisters and the award-winning Eisenhower High School EliteEnergy Show Choir.
All of those groups will be serving ina variety of volunteer capacities insupport of the tournament.
In fact, Renee Stivers, director ofPartners In Education, is in charge ofrecruiting and organizing tournamentvolunteers.
“That’s a big job and a very time-consuming one.” Deadrick-Wolfer said.“Volunteers are very important to us.Without them, it would be almostimpossible to hold the tournament “
Stivers said she is pleased theorganization will be a beneficiary of adonation that will help further theprogram’s mission, which is to providemeaningful educational experiences tothe students of Macon County and partsof DeWitt, Piatt and Shelby counties.“We recently determined that ouractivities last year touched the lives of5,000 students in the area we serve,” shesaid.
Zach Shields, director of BigBrothers/Big Sisters, said he and boardmembers have been “pounding the
