Section 4.7Graph Linear Functions
f(x)= 2x +1
You have seen linear equations written in the form y = mx + b. By naming a function f, you can write it using FUNCTION NOTATION.
f(x) = mx + bThe symbol f(x) is the same as “y”
It means the function of x….….f(x) is read “f of x”
What is the value of the function f(x)= 2x – 15 when x = -4?
A -23 B -5 C 5 D 23
f(x)= 2x – 15
f(-4)= 2(-4) – 15
f(-4)= (-8) – 15
f(-4)= -23
This produces the point (-4, -23)
For the function f(x) = 2x – 10, find the value of x so that f(x) = 6.
f(x)= 2x – 10
6 = 2x – 10
This produces the point (8,6)

What is a possible domain?
What is a possible range?
x > 0
y > 0
Domain is the x values. The x valuesin this problem are years since 1995.
Range is the y values. The y valuesin this problem are number of wolves.
(0 , 7)(1 , 44)(2 , 81)(3,118)
Families of Functions
f(x) = x
The parent function hasA slope of 1 and a
y-intercept of 0.
Using your calculator, graph the following functions…
g(x) = x + 7f(x) = x h(x) = 6x
Parent Linear Function Function is more steep than the parent linearfunction.
Function is 7 units higher than the parent linearfunction.
Enter the 2 functions into your calculator…f(x) = 60x + 40 g(x) = 60x + 5
