Goals and objectives for this internship experience: The GPSI Intern will assist with job duties within the Bureau
of Collections - Technical Recovery Section. The intern will be responsible for assisting with the Liens and Estates Asset
Discovery Programs. This will also require some fact finding and evaluation of cases. The intern will also be responsible for
verification of County Death and Probate lists, and duties involved with processing the death listings. Other duties that the
intern will assist with include running statistical reports as needed, assist with processing unit reports, running comparative
reports, and other duties as assigned. The interns will assist in the capturing the group of MAGI ACA clients with a category of
assistance code “94” and a MANG P code “G”. They will assist with securing this information for Executive staff to utilize by
means of reports with the objective of making lien and estate claims on this newly established benefit group of clients. To learn
the Technical Recovery Case Management System (TRCMS) computer system to be able to work with the new ACA
requirements for data in this system. This will require analysis of the assets of clients to be entered and tracked regarding life
insurance, trusts, property information, annuities, prepaid burial/funeral, pensions, retirements, and IRS's.
Experiential learning outcomes for the intern based on the goals and objectives: They will learn to
research data on State computer systems, analyze data, and see the process of collection of funds. The intern will learn the
functions of operations between different State agencies.

a) ways that data are used to make programmatic and policy decisions;
b) to analyze the claims data within the EDW to identify trends in disease prevalence, use of preventive and screening services
(i.e., breast and cervical cancer screenings, service utilization) in order to improve quality of care and access to services for
HFS beneficiaries;
c) about federal and state initiatives to provide health care to low-income recipients, and the accountability and reporting
functions associated with these initiatives;
d) about the responsibility and challenges of working in a state agency;
e) about taking responsibility for projects, being responsive to the needs of programmatic initiatives and grant applications;
g) the expectations of being a member in a professional work environment
POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Maternal Health intern will report to the Maternal Health Program Manager and will
potentially assist across all programs in BQM. The Maternal Health Program Manager has a background in public health,
specifically family planning, women's health, and preconception/interconception care; program design, implementation and
evaluation; and federal reporting. The intern should have an interest in learning about public health initiatives to improve
women's health and birth outcomes, program evaluation and reporting. Ideally, the intern will have good computer skills,
including proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite products. Additionally, the intern will assist with creating written

-Assist in development of educational materials related to the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program for the general
public and medical professionals.
-Under supervision of the Program and Policy Supervisor, coordinate revision of existing Program brochures and pamphlets.
-Utilize internet skills to research breast and cervical cancer related information available from nationally recognized resources.
-Coordinate outreach efforts to increase awareness of breast and cervical cancer screening opportunities. This will include
partnering with national organizations to identify women in hard to reach geographical areas to achieve caseload.
-Perform community outreach at local health fairs and serve as IBCCP representative on local cancer coalition.

1. Assist with the coordination of the Illinois Tobacco Prevention and Control Program state and local initiatives.
2. Assist with the coordination of grantee requirements related to the Illinois Tobacco-Free Communities program, REALITY
Illinois tobacco prevention youth engagement program, and the Illinois Tobacco Quitline.
3. Participate in CDC/grantee conference calls, Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion meetings and daily
assignments related to the tobacco prevention and control program.
4. Assist with evaluation of tobacco health communication materials/websites/resources/program reports. Projects may
include web pages, training brochures, correspondence, researching legislative issues, grant applications/workplans, quarterly
and annual reports.
5. Assist with the development of policy briefs on tobacco-related issues and on tobacco as a risk factor for other chronic
diseases.
6. Participate in data analysis projects related to tobacco and other chronic diseases for which tobacco is a risk factor . Data

Goals and objectives for this internship experience: The goal of the internship is to understand the role of the
State Sites Unit and Voluntary Site Remediation Program in remediating contaminated sites in Illinois. In addition to the
above, to also gain an understanding of the law and requirements associated with the Right to Know legislation and how sites
are evaluated for Environmental Justice areas. After understanding the regulations, be prepared to review a site and determine
the Right-to-Know status and determine if the site resides in an Environmental Justice area. Also, research the former
manufactured gas plant sites in Illinois and finalize a database to include pertinent information such as location, property owner
responsible party, etc.
Experiential learning outcomes for the intern based on the goals and objectives: The learning outcome
for the intern is to have a full understanding of cleanup goals for contaminated sites. To be able to recognize when further
steps are necessary to protect human health and the environment and identify necessary steps for compliance with the
environmental laws in Illinois.
