Education and Workforce Development

For single-function projects (research, education, or extension), eligible institutions include: •

(1) State Agricultural Experiment Stations; (2) Colleges and universities, including junior colleges offering associate degrees or higher; (3) University research foundations; (4) Other research institutions and organizations; (5) Federal agencies; (6) National laboratories; (7) Private organizations or corporations; (8) Individuals who are U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents; (9) Any group consisting of two or more entities identified in (1) through (8). Eligible institutions do not include foreign and international organizations.

For integrated projects, eligible institutions include:

• a) Colleges and universities; b) 1994 Land-Grant Institutions; and c) Hispanic-Serving Agricultural Colleges and Universities (HSACUs).

Predoctoral Fellowships

General Requirements •

The individual must have advanced to candidacy, as per institutional requirements, by July 19, 2018. Fellows are required to carry out their projects on a full-time basis (i.e. 100% effort). The predoctoral candidate must be the sole Project Director. Citizen, national, or permanent resident of the United States. This program area accepts new and resubmitted applications only. Renewal applications are not accepted in this program area.

Proposed Budget Requests •

Predoctoral Fellowship applications must not exceed $120,000 total (including institutional allowance) for project periods of up to 2 years. Stipend (up to $35,000 per year)

Tuition, fees, fringe benefits, supplies, travel, workshops, and publications - up to $22,000 per year Institutional allowance, in lieu of indirect costs, up to $3,000 per year

Other Information •

We highly recommend that applications be submitted through the mentor's institution with the mentor institution listed as the applicant. Fellows are expected to build the professional skills necessary for career agility; explore opportunities available in academia, industry, government and other career paths; and forge mentorships with professional and business leaders and faculty. Applications that involve industry participation and/or international experiences (e.g., through collaborating mentors) are encouraged.

Postdoctoral Fellowships

General Requirements • All doctoral degree requirements must be satisfied no earlier than January 1, 2015 and no later

than April 19, 2019. • Fellows are required to carry out their projects on a full-time basis (i.e. 100% effort). • The postdoctoral scholar must be the sole Project Director. • Citizen, national, or permanent resident of the United States. • This program area accepts new and resubmitted applications only. Renewal applications are not

accepted in this program area.

Proposed Budget Requests • Postdoctoral Fellowship applications must not exceed $165,000 total (including institutional

allowance) for project periods of up to 2 years.

Funds should be requested primarily for salary support, although other expenditures (e.g., fringe benefits, supplies, travel, workshops, and publications) are allowable. Expenditures other than salary support may not exceed $30,000 per year. Institutional allowance, in lieu of indirect costs, not to exceed $3,000 per year.

Other Information •

We highly recommend that applications be submitted through the mentor's institution with the mentor institution listed as the applicant. Although a proposed project may fit in the context of the mentor's existing scientific area, the Postdoctoral Fellowship Grant should initiate an independent scientific program, rather than serve as an extension of ongoing projects in the mentor's laboratory. Applications that involve industry participation and/or international experiences (e.g., through collaborating mentors) are encouraged.

For Predoctoral Grant applications, the Project Narrative section may not exceed a total of six pages For Postdoctoral Grant applications, the Project Narrative section may not exceed a total of ten pages 12-point font and line spacing not exceeding six lines per vertical inch including all figures and tables.

Novelty and innovation in the training and career development plans supports the career trajectory of the Fellows and provides sufficient time to obtain teaching credentials or competencies. Appropriate mentor engagement and training in research, education, and/or extension is described. Project objectives and outcomes are clearly described and measurable, adequate, and appropriate. Plan and methods for evaluating success of project activities and documenting potential impact against measurable short and mid-term outcomes are suitable and feasible. Novelty, multidisciplinary innovation, uniqueness, originality, and advancing current knowledge. The predoctoral or postdoctoral fellow has documented achievement of high educational quality and excellence.
