Over Wyre, one of the North West’s best kept secrets is home to The Seven Stars - and Rick & Catherine Gilbert’s family.

They are the hands behind the pumps of the Seven Stars Hotel in Stalmine and

are determined to put it back on the map. Having recently been refurbished in 2010, which dragged the pub kicking and screaming as a great player of the pub scene and one of the most clean and pleasant pubs in the area. Stalmine itself is an area of great rural attractiveness and The Seven Stars is slap-bang right in the middle.

It’s a family affair too with Catherine’s mum doing the cleaning, Rick in the kitchen – with the help of other kitchen staff - and her four year old daughter Hannah chatting to the resident ghost – a presence that has become almost normal in a building which dates back over 300 years.

Having started working for Wetherpsoons and later running a nightclub before taking on other pubs in the North West, Rick and Catherine have plenty of background in establishing places, with Rick taking

firm stand as a troubleshooter and trying to get a pub that all people, locals and passers by will enjoy and keep coming back to – all backed up with their recent 5 star rating from Wyre Borough Council for food hygiene only proves that hard work and dedication is getting the pub back on the map.

Live music features every Saturday, daily specials, home cooked food, steak nights, curry nights and full Sunday Roasts, real ale, bed and breakfast accommodation, a function room, a heated/covered outside smoking area, a large car park – and a challenge that their home-made pizzas are the best for miles around!

“It has a lot of potential and everyone seems to have been very impressed so far with what they have seen,” Catherine says. “We are determined to make a go of it because it’s a good place in such a good area, we have a lovely family and are keen to settle down and for our children grow up here.”

Moss Side Children’s Nursery

Stalmine - Over Wyre’s hidden gem

Nursery children learn to respect and appreciate the natural world.

Moss Side Nursery in Stalmine is into its second year of offering weekly Forest School sessions to pre-school children.

A new group of the Nursery’s older children will set off for the woods at Wyre Estuary Country Park again in September, loaded with rucksacks, tarpaulins and marshmallows.

As a result of Laura Larsen, Nursery Manager, becoming a Forest School leader, children are benefiting enormously from their 15 weeks of Forest School sessions.

Every Tuesday the children are given the opportunity to create their own shelters, explore the natural world and play creatively in this very special place.

Wearing wellies and waterproofs, the children access Forest School all year round, with the ever changing elements providing regular new experiences to develop their learning.

The forest has made such a huge impact on the children at Moss Side Nursery that Wyre Estuary Country Park has agreed to welcome weekend sessions in the forest for primary school children.

Poulton’s Archaeological FutureFive hundred years from now archaeologists investigating the ancient site of Poulton may come to the following conclusions. Poulton was obviously the epicentre of an ancient cult devoted to the gods of food. Archaeologists have found evidence of the worship of food from several different countries: Italy, China, Thailand, India, Turkey and France. Food was obviously intrinsic to this otherwise relatively culturally impoverished society.

The town’s only library showed little evidence of extensive use, whilst the great spaces devoted to the parking of cars has led investigators to suggest that the inhabitants may only have had vestigial legs; forcing them to use their cars for all journeys, regardless of duration or distance travelled. Just as cave salamanders that live their lives in the stygian

darkness of their subterranean home lose first their sight and eventually the organs of sight themselves, so it is postulated that the ancient Poultonians may have lost all self-generated motive power. The remains of a number of Segway scooters seem to lend credence to this hypothesis.

The main god, however, was clearly some sort of deity related to flora, for just about every corner of the dig has turned up artefacts, which were, apparently, known as “hanging baskets”. These were the object of a high degree of veneration and seem to have been found in even the humblest of homes. Even the town’s railway station was a centre for the worship of their floral gods. The parallels with the Hanging Gardens of Babylon are instant and striking.

With thousands of happy customers across the Northwest the majority of new customers come from recommendations as, after experiencing the quality of the service, homeowners are more than happy to recommend and reuse PVC Wizard.

Now with the establishment of its Blackpool based branch, homeowners across the Fylde can benefit from the superior level of clean that PVC Wizard provides. And with their unique guarantee, full insurance coverage and knowledge that Ultraframe Home Improvements, the Clitheroe based installation department of the biggest name in conservatory business, choose PVC Wizard to clean for their customers, conservatory owners across the Fylde can rest assured that this is a company they can trust.

September Wildlife September is a quiet time of year for ornithologists casual or otherwise. Although there are plenty of insects about, some of the birds that feed on them have already left our shores. I haven’t seen a swift for a few days now. Down by the River Wyre all is quiet: the autumn migrants won’t start to arrive until September.

I did see something unusual the other day though. As the tide retreated, the waters reached a certain depth as they passed over a large mud bank. A group of mixed wading birds was feeding on the bank and the sun was shining brightly on the scene. At one point there must have been about half an inch of water covering the mud, which gave the strong impression that the birds were standing on the waters of some giant infinity pool. The impression only lasted a few minutes, and naturally I had chosen not to bring my camera. I suspect that a decent photographer could have got a great photo of the phenomenon. Logic dictates that this must happen twice a day but it was the first time I had seen it.

Some of the aforementioned insects made their presence felt by biting me on the arms and legs. They are slow moving, black horseflies – or something similar – that draw blood when they bite. They are known locally as clegs or cleggies. I suppose they must play their part in the orchestra of nature; like wasps they must have their good side. It is a little difficult to appreciate their positive side though, as you count the total number of bites after your walk.

Fylde Cricket Club – Grant AwardThe England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is pleased to announce that Fylde Cricket Club has been awarded a grant from the England and Wales Cricket Board in partnership with Sport England.

The investment supports Sport England’s and the ECB’s national strategy 2009 – 2013 which aims to grow the number of people playing sport, sustain participation by encouraging more people to keep playing sport, and help talented sports people excel.

Fylde Cricket Club was identified by the Lancashire Cricket Board and by the ECB as a Club of strategic and developmental importance due to their ability to contribute to the ECB’s goal to develop cricket through energising people and partnerships to deliver national goals at a local level, and to inspire people to play cricket.

The Club has been awarded a grant of £108,875 towards the cost of a new pavilion rebuild which has greatly enhanced the Club’s facilities. As a direct result of the rebuild Fylde has forged links with the Hodgson Academy and Wyre Girls Cricket at U11 and U13 is now also based at the Club.

Club Committee man, Philip Taylor, said “Everyone at the Club was really delighted when we were awarded the grant because it has enabled us to transform the pavilion. We now have two large vastly improved changing rooms, shower and toilet facilities, an umpires’ changing room and facilities for people with disabilities and public toilets. All the facilities have been developed in accordance with ECB specifications.”

“In recent times the Club has made good progress and from its own resources we have been able to up-grade the bar and social facilities. The Club has also achieved ECB Clubmark and Focus Club status and this enabled us to apply for the grants. We are also a Chance to Shine Club providing coaching and play opportunities in six local schools and we have over 100 junior members at the Club – boys and girls. We have already seen an increase in the number of girls using the Club and we aim to increase participation further.”

“We have a structured coaching programme through our qualified coaches and we are pleased the ECB has recognised the work we do at junior level.”

“We regard the grant as an investment in the development of cricket at the Club in the future and the excellent new facilities will benefit the local community in the coming years.”

Sport England’s Director of Property, Charles Johnson, said: “The new pavilion will obviously help the development of sport at Fylde Cricket Club and in Lancashire. We are confident that the ECB’s strategic approach to investing in high-quality, sustainable facilities will help cricket to attract and retain many new participants. In this particular instance, this improved facility will be welcomed by experienced players and youngsters who are keen to progress in cricket and we are pleased to support grass roots sport.”

A Horrible Day in the Dungeon! I’ve had a horrible day, shut in a dark room with strangers, shouted at, had blood and guts sprayed on me and finally been beheaded. That all went to plan then for the preview at Blackpools newest Dungeon attraction!

By 1 September, all eight of Merlins attractions will be open in Blackpool, including of course, the new Blackpool Dungeon which has been previewing this afternoon.

The guests were met for their afternoon of terror at the brand new entrance at the back corner of the building. It’s a living a breathing attraction and the starring ghouls, torturers and spirits marched along the precinct banging their drums and chanting their spells to the delight of the hoards who instantly gathered to watch. Chief Judge read out the edict proclaiming the attraction open, and asked the witches to lead the way!

Having your head chopped off by a stranger is an entertaining start to an afternoon, and it only got better, as a small group were led into the depths of the building, and into the darkness - to be greeted by the first in a line of weirdos with bad teeth! The black jester asked ‘Why does history keep repeating itself’ (answer, because no one listened the first time!) and he’s also got a natty line in songs and rhymes!

Bundled into a cage we began the descent to hell, and through a series of rooms, corridors and doors, being jumped at by dead bodies, narrowly missing the emptying of the jerry through a window, and various other cold draughts and insults. The route is through history and the plague, the marauding Vikings and Saxons, the Civil War and nearby Skippool Creek with a bit of local historical fact thrown in for good measure.

The nurse was particularly entertaining, although hopefully not available on the NHS! Pity the poor ‘volunteer’ strapped to the chair who had his buboes cured through removal of his insides. We felt his ills being cured with

leeches as they wiggled under our seats and his screams were curdling - so were ours when we were sprayed with his blood and guts!

The Witches of Pendle Hill is a piece of Lancashire history and this afternoon we met one of them - swinging by the neck, having been tried and found guilty. Apparently we’d all been condemned and went to the next room to meet our own fate.

Strapped to a bench we came face to face with the jury, were tried and condemned and the lever was pulled..... at which point we plunged to our end with much screaming!

The attraction is an hour and ten minutes or so, plus the time it takes you to navigate the horrors for sale in the Dungeon shop, is very well done and very high quality all round. I remember the Chamber of Horrors in the old Madame Tussauds in the 70’s and it’s very much not like that at all. The costumes and make-up are excellent and how do they make their teeth look so foul? Even on the first previews it was a slick production, where the only hiccups were a slightly stuck door and the Judges hat falling off in the middle of the trial! You’d really have thought that the actors had been doing it all their life instead of this being one of their first performances to strangers. A slight smell of fillers was the only thing that reminded you that this was all brand spanking new, and I quite like the smell of fillers anyway!

The Merlin way is to offer combination ticketing, with the slogan ‘The more you see, the more you save’. So if you want to come on holiday and go to several attractions over the course of a few days you will save more by buying the combination that suits you. An adult ticket to the Dungeon is £14.40 when bought alone, and you can save more with a ‘First to Scream’ offer if you buy tickets online before the 1 September, from www.thedungeons.com. The Dungeon is open from this Saturday (27 August). And get this, the manager is really called Gary Blackadder. How could you find a better job with a name like that!

Merlin aim to make memorable experiences with their attractions and that’s exactly what they have done in the Dungeon. ‘Have a horrible day.....’

HAMBLETON W.I.Italy was the theme for our August Meeting run exclusively by the members, with Ronnie Parker as acting President and Sue Cross as Vice President. We were handed a quiz on arrival, about all things Italian, which we filled in to the best of our ability whilst we were entertained by Karen Carpazzi who had briefly been married to an Italian, she had been asked to talk about Italy, but instead chose to share with us a rollicking hour of reminiscences starting with her birth to a 14 year old mother, Karen was then adopted by a very loving couple who, faced with this young mother in short white socks wanted to adopt her as well! Karen always knew she was adopted as her new parents referred to her as ‘The Chosen One’ and she always felt ‘special’ even when a few years later this couple had a child of their own Karen still felt she was the lucky one.

Living in Anchorsholme Karen attended the Babs Dawson Dancing School, dancing and singing to her hearts content, at an early age she could play and read music long before she actually knuckled down at real school and learned to read later on. She always thought she would like to be a nurse but the teacher at school said she was not clever enough!

Karen applied and was accepted at the Italia Conti Drama and Dancing Academy in London even though she was only small in height and rather rotund, she was a very keen student and worked so hard she lost 3 stone down to 6¾ stone and her body gave out with the punishing schedule, so she had to think of a way of earning her living. Butlins she said and auditioned and was taken on, enjoying singing

with now well known stars like Joe Pasquale, then came the winter time and onto the Cruise boats touring around Denmark, Norway [very very cold] and Hamburg, education completed by seeing the Red Light District. After being briefly married and living in Italy’ as you do’, Karen came back to England and took up ‘Doing the Clubs’ touring round less glamorous places in Manchester, Liverpool and Rossendale all sequins and smoke and beer fumes.

Karen was fed up of Sequins and Night Clubs and became a cleaner in a hospital, then two friends died with H.I.V. and she was very upset that they died alone and heard about the ‘Buddy’ scheme where you befriend and help terminally ill people. She enquired at the hospital and was soon at college training to be a nurse, even though she still thought of herself as ‘not clever enough’, she got her Nursing degree. She is now nursing at Trinity Hospice in Blackpool and whilst no longer 6¾ stone she is fulfilled by the career she has chosen and feels privileged to ‘help’, with her knowledge and experience, others not so fortunate in life.

We ended our ‘Italian Evening’ with slices of pizza and cupcakes.

New members welcomed, why not come along and see what fun and games we get up to in Hambleton.
