In 2011/12 the total number of students enrolled on a Level 2 Apprenticeship at the Tees Valley Colleges was 793 and on a Level 3 Apprenticeship 484.

In 2011/12 the Tees Valley Colleges offered 109 apprenticeship frameworks. This has increased from 61apprenticeship frameworks that were offered in 2009/10.

The number of students who have completed a Level 2 Apprenticeship in 2010/11 was 282 (16-18 year olds) and 150 (19+).

The most popular apprenticeship programmes in 2010/11 were:-

A HIGH flying student is on course for a transatlantic career to care for toddlers born in the USA.

Childcare trainee Kelsie Jeeves, 17, has her sights set on living the American dream after completing a one year apprenticeship at Darlington College. Kelsie, of Newton Aycliffe, is currently undertaking her training within the college’s own Childcare Centre, which cares for 70 children aged from six weeks to five years and also provides holiday club care for older children.

“My family is very child orientated and I always wanted to work with children, so pursuing a career in childcare seemed a natural thing to do,” said Kelsie. “After leaving school I did an NVQ Level 2 in childcare at another local college but they were unable to offer me any apprentice opportunities.

“My mum saw an advert for Darlington College, which was offering one year full time childcare apprenticeships, so I switched colleges and came to Darlington. Kelsie, who is set to complete her apprenticeship in the summer, is currently searching for job opportunities in the USA as a live-in nanny.

Redcar & Cleveland College and Coast & Country Housing have been working together to deliver training for the housing association’s staff for the last 10 years.

Apprentice Craig Goodall spends four days a week on site and one day a week in College working towards an NVQ Level 2 and a Diploma Level 2 in Painting and Decorating. Craig’s skills were recognised when he won the New Entrant Painting and Decorating category and the Crown Trade Apprentice Decorator of the Year award at the north east heats of the national SkillBuild competition, which were held at the College this year.

“It was really challenging preparing to take part, especially because you’re marked on the time you take to complete the job as well as the overall quality of your work, but for me that’s just like the work I do every day for Coast & Country and I just thought of the judges as one of our customers and concentrated on making them happy” said Craig.

Shaun Smith and Daniel Fordy are forging their way through their Apprenticeship in Joinery at Stockton Riverside College and getting a flying start to their careers.

They are making a real impression at ‘Interserve’, one of the world’s foremost support services and construction companies.

At its Middlesbrough division where the Regional Director, David Flewker started his career as an Apprentice, the young learners are involved with two of Interserve’s biggest projects - South Tees Hospital and Teesside University - and are gaining fantastic work experience.

Paul Longmore, Lecturer at the College said of them;‘Their work is of a very high standard and they have taken great pride in their theory and practical learning. They are two of the best Apprentices that we’ve had the pleasure of working with’.

Poppy’s Senior Stylist Lauren Owens Secures Employment With Paul Mitchell

Lauren Owens started out on a Level 2 Apprenticeship at Middlesbrough College, progressing to a Level 3 Apprenticeship. She has secured a full time position as a Senior Hair Stylist at Poppy’s Salon in Hartlepool, but has been drafted onto Paul Mitchell’s Artistic Education Team and Media Team. Paul Mitchell is an extremely reputable hair products brand and is well respected within the industry and to secure a place on these teams delivering styling workshops, co-ordinating photo shoots and writing press releases is a fantastic achievement.

Lauren has decided that a Level 2 and 3 Apprenticeship alongside a full time post at Poppy’s is clearly not taxing enough for her as she has pushed herself to the limit by enrolling onto a Foundation Degree in Leadership and Management.

It’s because of this business drive, that Lauren was asked by Poppy’s owner to apply for a place on the Paul Mitchell Teams. There were hundreds of entries and Lauren won her place on merit. What she has achieved so far at such a young age is just incredible and there seems to be no stopping her. Middlesbrough College is very proud to have helped Lauren on her way to success.

A project proved to be the icing on the cake for five second year photography students at Cleveland College of Art & Design who have been getting their teeth into a brief to promote local catering firm Bake My Day.

The project, part of a college collaboration with local businesses aims to give young photographers the chance to work to a professional live brief. Students were tasked with taking on the roles of photographers, copywriters, Photoshop editor, designer and communications lead.

Project manager Catherine Sawdon 19 said: “We have been given four weeks to complete the project, which involved liaising with the different companies, setting up the studio shoots and editing the final pictures before presenting them to the client.” The final selection of images will be used to help promote the Bake My Day website.

CCAD lecturer Phil Rodriguez added: “It’s very important that students have the opportunity to work on real projects with real businesses to learn the importance of working to deadlines and meeting the expectations of their clients.

Design lead for the team Daniel Ludford, 17, said: “It’s been a great experience working within a studio setting and using all of the equipment available here, including lights, backdrops, reflectors and various types of digital and film cameras.

“Although we each have a specific role in the project we have all been taking our own individual photographs, which we will be able to use in our portfolios to show future clients.”

STAR student Caroline McCarroll collected a hat-trick of awards at an emotional college ceremony last November, with former boss Gus Robinson MBE at the forefront of her mind. The 24-year-old won the Student of the Year 2011, the Plumbing Award and Apprentice of the Year at Hartlepool College of Further Education’s annual Celebration of Achievement awards.

It was a particularly poignant night for Caroline, a gas service engineer for Gus Robinson Developments. Gus’s son Daniel attended the ceremony alongside other representatives from the town firm. The awards, held inside the new £53m college building in Stockton Street, were staged the day after the funeral of the popular town businessman and boxing promoter.

Caroline started her apprenticeship course without a placement but College tutors say she fought for an opportunity and when one arose at Gus Robinson Developments grabbed it with both hands. Caroline, who lives in Hartlepool, is currently studying for a Higher National Certificate in Building Services while working four days a week at the company.

Jason Emmerson, head of school for building services and environmental technologies, said: “Caroline is a star student and she is a great ambassador for Gus Robinson Developments.”

The College of Further Education is an extensive provider of apprenticeship training in Teesside and County Durham with more than 700 apprentices. Sir Paul Nicholson, the Lord Lieutenant of County Durham attended the ceremony and said: “It is an honour to be among such talent.”

Michael Bretherick, College Principal and Chief Executive said: “We are delighted with the progress we have made in establishing our curriculum specialisms, and were particularly pleased this year to be named as North-East hub for the National Skills Academy in Environmental Technologies, to add to our membership of three other NSAs in process, manufacturing and nuclear engineering. We are proud of the fact that our staff, through their tireless efforts, have helped to create over 300 jobs for apprentices this year alone.”
