the Apple offi ce and played the song. John Lennon was there, and a couple of other members of The Beatles, and they said they liked what we did with it and that they were going to release the single on the Apple label for us.”

But while Hot Chocolate might have shot to fame courtesy of The Beatles, they never enjoyed the stratospheric levels of fame that John, Paul, George and Ringo ever did.

“We weren’t a boy band, we were a man band so I suppose younger girls could identify more with younger bands than they can with a slightly older band. You wouldn’t get slightly older, sophisticated woman chasing after a

band, because they won’t let themselves go like that... you wouldn’t see a nice, attractive lady in a pair of high heels and a beautiful outfi t screaming and hollering and shouting or chasing the group’s coach as it leaves the theatre,” he said.

Over the band’s long career, Hot Chocolate have achieved a lot of success but for Olive, two highlights stand out – being the fi rst British band to have played in the Soviet Union, and performing at Princess Diana’s pre-nuptial ball.

“For me personally, watching Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Phillip waltzing to ‘You Sexy Thing’ while we performed at

Buckingham Palace, that is my personal highlight, I don’t think that will ever be equalled.”

In recent years, Hot Chocolate has enjoyed a surge in popularity as their music is revived in ads and played on the radio.

But although today’s listeners clearly enjoy the band’s sound, Olive said they have no plans to release any new tracks due to fears about illegal downloading.

“It’s so different now, it’s very hard to police... if you write a song, there aren’t many record companies like there used to be,” Olive admitted.

Even if they don’t ever create any new

music, Olive believes that Hot Chocolate’s sound is so unique that it will always stand out.

“It’s not easy to capture our sound, a lot of bands have tried but because it has that Caribbean fl avour to it, it’s not easy. They get the sound but they can’t get the feel of our music, so I think they leave it well alone which is just as well anyway,” he said.

W hile their songs have featured in countless ads and movies, chart-topping British band Hot Chocolate have managed to stay

out of the spotlight over their four decades in the music industry.

The band, which was formed in 1969, have released many iconic songs and remarkably are the only musical group in the United Kingdom to have released a hit song each year for 15 consecutive years.

Their music – catchy pop and disco laced with Caribbean infl uences – defi ned the 1970’s with the band’s hits including ‘It Started With a Kiss’, ‘Emma’, ‘Every 1’s a Winner’, ‘Brother Louie’ and ‘No Doubt About It’.

Yet despite their string of top 10 hits, Hot Chocolate are arguably most famous for their funky, uptempo 1975 song ‘You Sexy Thing’, which is still being used in fi lms and ads years after its release.

While the song may have had enduring success, founding band member Patrick Olive said that the inspiration behind the catchy tune was simple.

“Cheekiness and beautiful ladies, because the majority of the guys in the band are from the Caribbean and if we see an attractive lady, we say ‘hey you sexy thing’, so the inspiration for the song comes from seeing a lot of attractive, sexy ladies,” Olive said.

Audiences in Australia will be able to enjoy Hot Chocolate’s mischievous spirit live when the band tours down under, playing at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, October 8.

“They’re going to get a lot of excitement, they’re going to be hearing a lot of songs they’re familiar with and they’ve danced to and sung along with, so it’s going to be a hot evening in Australia,” Olive said.

Hot Chocolate began after the band’s members, who were friends and co-workers, decided to make music and recorded a reggae-infused cover of John Lennon’s song ‘Give Peace a Chance’.

The band caught their lucky break after they went to Apple Records to get permission to release the cover, and impressed Lennon himself with their version of his hit song.

D ance festival Defqon.1 will hit Penrith this weekend, with organisers promising this year’s event will be bigger than ever.

The event, which is in its fi fth year, will be held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre with the festival opening on Saturday, September 14.

This year’s theme is ‘scrap the system’, and attendees will be able to camp on-site on Friday, September 13 and go to the offi cial Defqon.1 pre-party, which features a range of artists.

Seven customised stages will be set up to transform the location and set the scene for a weekend of wild dance music, guaranteed to please festival-goers.

Dance music lovers will be thrilled with the line-up, which provides over 130 international and Australian acts to see, including some of the most talented names from the hard dance genre.

On the main stage you can expect to see

Coone, Brennan Heart, Ran-D, Psyko Punkz and homecoming heroes Toneshifterz.

This year, event promoters Q-dance are promising a larger-than-life festival experience and an attempt to create a new world record with the highly anticipated main stage.

Fans will have to wait to see the set-up of the main stage, which is shrouded in secrecy, but in the meantime hard work is being done behind the scenes to create the structure, which will weigh over 300 tonnes and stand over 25 metres high and 50 metres wide.

The annual Defqon.1 Festival was formed in the Netherlands, where is still runs, and has been held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre since 2009.

In the past, Defqon.1 has brought crowds of more than 25,000 people to Penrith, coming from all around Australia, and has injected an estimated $2 million annually into the local economy.

The festival has become an institution and is very popular among young people, with

after-movies of the 2012 event receiving more than 1.6 million views on YouTube, while the Defqon.1 Facebook page has almost 400,000 fans.

I f you’ve often complained that radio stations don’t play the same classic hits they used to, then take a walk down memory lane and celebrate the great

music of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.Audiences will be taken back to the

glory days of rock with the ‘Doobies, Eagles and West Coast Rock Show’, which will be playing at St Marys Leagues Club on Friday, September 27.

The show has been playing since 2005, and pays tribute to some of the most talented and popular bands of yesteryear – The Doobie Brothers, The Eagles, Santana and the best of West Coast rock.

Led by singer Barry Leef, this all-star nine-piece band features some of the city’s most talented performers and musicians, who master the hit songs on the set list and take the audience back in time.

Barry Leef has appeared in more than 170 television and radio advertisements over 20 years, and has also fronted the bands Bakery

and Supermarket and led the in-house band at Sydney’s Musician’s club.

He has also performed alongside a list of distinguished performers including Frank Zappa, Jimmy Smith, Jeff ‘Skunk’ Baxter and Elvin Bishop.

Leef will be joined on stage by vocalist Kimi Tupaea, who has powerful vocals that he uses to imitate the unique voice of Doobie Brothers singer Mike McDonald.

The show covers a groundbreaking, iconic era in music history, and the bands featured in ‘Doobies, Eagles and West Coast Rock’ had an amazing output of music, with more than 100 global hits combined.

Fans will be able to relive all their favourite songs, including ‘Listen to the Music’, ‘Little Darlin’, ‘What A Fool Believes’ and ‘Minute by Minute’ by The Doobie Brothers.

There’s also something for younger children, with long-standing ‘Play School’ host Justine Clark set to sing and dance in a lively and interactive show that is ideal for pre-schoolers.

The Blue Grotto Project features an interactive video installation for kids with disabilities, after students from western Sydney

participated in fi lm and sound recording workshops.

SPOT ON ACTIVITIES FOR THE KIDS

E very Friday night, countless cover bands can be found playing in western Sydney yet Seattle Sound manages to stand out in the crowd.

The band began way back in 1996 and although 17 years have passed and countless musical trends have come and gone, one thing remains the same – thousands of Penrith residents still buy tickets to see this legendary cover band live.

Regulars on the club and pub circuit, Seattle Sound are next due to play at Penrith RSL on Friday, September 13.

The band is made up of fi ve talented musicians, with lead singer John Perry being one of the original members.

In the early days of Seattle Sound, the band’s playlists were saturated with the independent and grungy, popular songs of Seattle-based groups such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots and Soundgarden, who each sold millions of albums worldwide.

While this is the music that started the Seattle Sound journey, the band’s members have updated and adapted their shows to suit the public’s changing preferences in music.

“We originally started doing Seattle sound music but now it’s not really like that,” Perry said.

“It started off with Pearl Jam and when Nirvana broke big 15 years ago, but from then on it’s evolved with a lot of other things. We’ve changed a lot in 16 years and some of the songs and artists we did before just don’t really work now.”

Despite the fact that Seattle Sound have updated their playlist and have a more modern feel nowadays, they have always stuck to producing loud, rocking music.

Audiences can expect to hear all the greatest rock songs that have hit the radio in the past few years, with hits from the Goo Goo Dolls, Matchbox 20, U2, Green Day, Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

Over the years, Seattle Sound have built up a reputation for being Sydney’s best cover band and have played over 800 gigs, including plenty in the local area.

Seattle Sound will play at Penrith RSL on Friday, September 13 at 9pm. Entry is free.

E ver since rockers Paramore fi rst burst onto the music scene back in 2005, they have been on the top of the charts with their catchy tunes.

Nine years on, the band is still going strong and is ready to rock when they come on their 2014 Australian tour, playing at Allphones Arena on Saturday, January 11.

While Paramore had some major achievements early on in their career, the band has retained their popularity over the years with their most recent self-titled album going straight to Number 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart when it was released.

The album is a return to glory for Paramore, with singles ‘Now’ and ‘Still Into You’ boasting powerful vocals and an edgy, alternative vibe with different genre infl uences.

Paramore is made up of bright orange-haired vocalist Hayley Williams, bass player Jeremy Davis and guitarist Taylor York.

Their debut album ‘All We Know Is Falling’ was released in 2005 and has since been

gold-certifi ed, springing them to international stardom with a range of hit songs including ‘All We Know’, ‘Pressure’ and ‘Emergency’.

These pop-tinged rock songs hit a chord with the public, and Paramore earned fans in countries across the globe.

After some line-up changes, Paramore then released their sophomore album ‘Riot!’ in 2007, with positive reviews praising the band’s simple yet catchy sound.

Four singles were released from ‘Riot!’, with the fi rst song ‘Misery Business’ rising up the charts and being played heavily on television and the radio, while ‘Hallelujah’, ‘Crushcrushcrush’ and ‘That’s What You Get’ also doing well in the alternative rock charts.

Their third and fourth albums ‘Brand New Eyes’ and ‘Singles Club’ continued to establish Paramore’s status as a major alternative rock band.

Fans of Paramore have been able to enjoy their lively performances, with the band having toured across the globe with visits to Asia,

Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South America.

Paramore will be joined on tour by British rock band You Me At Six and American duo Twenty One Pilots.

E veryone’s favourite loveable blue creatures are back on the big screen in the sequel to family comedy ‘The Smurfs’.

This time around, Smurfette is plagued by nightmares of betraying her fellow Smurfs and giving them over to the evil Gargamel. Oblivious to her troubles, the Smurfs are busy secretly planning a surprise party for Smurfette’s birthday but because none of them want to give away the surprise, they unwittingly make her feel unwelcome in the village.

Over in France, the Smurf’s archenemy Gargamel has made mischievous Smurf-like creatures, which he calls the Naughties, and hopes to use them to harness the magical, powerful Smurf essence. N ew Zealand’s Giesen Wines, who’ve been in the business some 30 years, have just released their fi rst-ever organic wine, and appropriately in the

footsteps of their fl agship Sauvignon Blanc.Fruit for this quite marvellous drop came

off vines planted in 2010 on a vineyard that had been left fallow for two vintages, after earlier vines had been ripped out. Giesen now have around 40ha of their 290ha vineyards at Marlborough planted to several varieties of vines that are raised and cared for organically. Something that winemaker Marcel Giesen says “spurs the viticultural and winemaking teams to become much closer to the seasons and the vineyards”.

“Now when it rains they have to get back into the vineyard to see the impact. They can no longer rely upon having the backup of additives to protect the fruit. By returning to traditional practices, we are growing grapes true to refl ection of the terroir,” he said.

Sauvignon Blanc 2011 came from two distinctly different vineyards, giving a wide range of fruit fl avours that are refl ected in this wine’s crisp, zesty citrus and herbaceous notes.

One to note: Mandala Wines owner, Charles Smedley was quick to recognise the good vintage shaping-up in the Yarra Valley in 2010, but confesses now that he didn’t realise just how good it was.

“The warm to mild conditions gave us a long, gentle growing season, and the rains came in an even cycle so there was no need to irrigate,” he says.

The resultant Mandala 2010 ‘The Butterfl y’ Cabernet Sauvignon refl ects that vintage, with Charles saying that seeing the wine now after time in the bottle, refl ects how the vintage was “particularly good”. At $50 this is a roast dinner wine to enjoy with anything from beef to lamb.

O ne of the big shows of the year premiered last Sunday on TEN, however not too many people fell in love with it, so to speak. ‘The Bachelor

Australia’ only attracted 669,000 viewers on its opening night, 331,000 shy of that magic one million mark. I must admit I did manage to catch the fi rst episode and it wasn’t bad, I’m actually quite surprised it didn’t do well in the ratings. I am a bit suss on the contestants though as there are a lot of very good looking women on there and it got me thinking, how on Earth are they still single? It did make me wonder as to whether these girls actually fi lled in an application for the show or were just headhunted off the street.

Australian comedian or should I say chameleon, Chris Lilley, has revealed the title of his new ABC show to air later this year. The new show is called ‘Ja’mie: Private School Girl’ and will feature the return of one of Lilley’s most famous characters, bitchy school girl Ja’mie King. The six-part series follows Ja’mie in her fi nal year of school at Hillford Girls Grammar School, far removed from Summer Heights High. Ja’mie experiences her last few weeks of school and a series of events that will change her life forever. Ja’mie was last seen in the massive hit ‘Summer Heights High’.

There was plenty of chatter this week that soon-to-be dad Rove McManus could

be reviving the classic game show ‘Blankety Blanks’ on TEN. The show, which originally starred Graham Kennedy, fi rst hit Australian screens in 1977. It was last revived in 1996 with Shane Bourne as host. This could be massive for Rove and TEN if it pays off but only if they don’t recycle the same old faces we’ve seen the last decade… you all know who I’m talking about.

My favourite show ‘Home and Away’ is set to begin fi lming episodes in London next month. The storyline follows a number of central characters faced with a challenge and asks the question ‘do they let go of what is most important in their lives or do they put

up a desperate fi ght to hold onto people they love?’ The UK episodes will air early next year.

In October ‘Big Brother’ will move Evictions to Wednesday nights, with the fi rst Eviction to take place on October 2. It’s understood the Evictions are being shifted due to ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ moving into the semi-fi nal stage of the competition.

Could this be the beginning of the end for ‘Deal or No Deal’? Channel Seven has announced that their new game show ‘Million Dollar Minute’ will air weeknights at 5.30pm beginning from this Monday. This news means ‘Deal’ will now shift to 5pm for the fi rst time.

Now their untold stories of bravery will be recounted in Ian McPhedran’s book Too Bold To Die, which honours and commemorates the work of Australian soldiers.

While Australians have been recipients of military honours recognising their bravery, many others have missed out and Too Bold To Die uncovers the amazing, mind-blowing tales of warfare from World War II up until today.

Journalist Ian McPhedran spoke to soldiers on the frontline about what valour means to them and explores the issue of why certain people have been feted as national heroes and received military honours while others have been bypassed almost completely.

McPhedran was the recipient of the 1993 United Nations Association peace media award and also won the 1999 Walkley Award for best news report with his investigation into the Navy’s Collins class submarine disaster.

W hile some people may have chosen to attend a private election party on Saturday night, The Joan was packed with a sold out audience

attending ‘Whoops! The Wharf Revue 2013’. After the nation headed to the polls on

September 7 to sweep the Coalition into power, many of Penrith’s theatre fans headed to The Joan to enjoy a less serious analysis of Australian politics.

Once again Jonathan Biggins and Drew Forsythe had the audience in stitches with their annual dose of political satire, joined on stage by actors Simon Burke and Amanda Bishop.

Ironically, the show fi nished up just as Kevin Rudd was conceding defeat on television screens inside The Joan.

The audience then attended a post-show party in the foyer as they took in the real election results of the night! All who attended thoroughly enjoyed the evening of laughs and parody.
