t is a New Year and time to
make a fresh start of things.
What if that fresh start includes
moving in with a new partner?
When two people have different
styles converge, making a new
home can be quite the challenge. No one
really likes moving and moving in togeth-
er can be double the trouble. With a few
tips and a careful eye, this potentially
hazardous affair can be turned into the
joyous occasion it should be.
First things first… the conversation.
By now you should know your new part-
ners likes and dislikes, what colors they
like and what general style the live in.
This conversation should include what
pieces from each of your separate
homes are going to stay and are going to
go. Be prepared to purge, but most of all
be prepared to compromise. If one of
you has a great modern couch and the
other has an amazing bed, well then use
them. The first rule is not who gets the
most of their existing stuff in the new
51
house but what stuff is the best for the
house that you are moving into. It is ok
to let go of things that don’t fit visually
or are just too big for the space or bet-
ter yet too small. This is also the mo-
ment to leave the damaged items be-
hind. While budget is always a con-
cern it’s better to have less things at
first and purchase items together as a
couple than live with that broken table
from your last party as a single person.
Now that you have been able to nar-
row down your furniture selections,
let’s talk about color. Here is a neat
trick that you can use to pick out your
next color scheme. Take a look into
your closet. Pull together an outfit us-
ing pieces of each of your wardrobe.
Now take a look at what you created
and use that to build your color pallets.
Are you afraid of too much color in
your new space? Use the accent col-
ors from the outfit in selecting items
like picture frames, accent pillows and
artwork. And speaking of artwork this
leads us to our third tip.
Artwork is said to be a personal
touch to any home but what if you both
like totally different art? Well that is fi-
ne too. Create a gallery wall. Take all
the art and put them in like frames to
create a more stream lined look or for
the more adventurous type just throw
them all together. To create some vis-
ual interest, take existing photographs
and turn them into black and white im-
ages to create contrast. This interest-
ing way of displaying art not only gets
all of your pieces up and in one
stunning display but it creates a strong
focal point and an interesting conver-
sation starter for guests as they stroll
thorough your home made museum.
It’s now time to make the move, so
pack up your truck with confidence
and take the plunge. This is an excit-
ing time in your life so don’t let the
stress of moving and combining your
lives take away this special moment.
It’s a New Year and a new start so get
ready, get set and go.
