Mechanical Engineering Department News Letter: 2016 – 17, Volume 02, Issue 01
From Department Head
Department of Mechanical Engineering took initiative to publish
department e-newsletter at the end of every semester containing
some important information and major achievements during
respective semester. Accordingly, the endeavor kick started in
academic year 2015/16 and issue 1 was made online on GCET
website with encouraging opening note from the Principal Dr.
Himanshu Soni. Subsequently issue no. 2 covering proceedings of II
sem., that is, even semester of academic year 2015/16 had also hit
the website and mailed to all alumnae. And few of them appreciated
the move to be in live touch with the department. The basic motive
behind this effort of publishing e-newsletter every semester is to
showcase achievements of students, faculty and staff members. We
also aim to be in active touch with the large pool of our alumni
members by this. I am sure with our collective efforts we can
continuously go on enhancing this endeavor.
I am happy to release this issue (2016/17 issue 1) of department e-newsletter. We are eager to listen from
our esteemed alumnae for any improvements/additions etc. to make this e-newsletter more effective.
Request to our alumnae: We would be more than happy to have few contributions from your side in
terms of technical and/or general articles/updates/informative stuff for the students etc. to be
included in next issue.

GCET ASME Student Section celebrated Engineers Day as EXODIA 16 on 15th September,
2016. This day is birthday of Great Pioneer Indian Engineer, Dr. M Visvesvaraya with huge
vigor and enthusiasm. The active GCET ASME Student Team decorated the foyer creatively by
giving it a Mechanical touch and setting the banners in motion with motors and gears. This itself
shows the enthusiasm of the ASME Team towards the event.
The team organized following events on this day. Students from different disciplines participated
in these events.
Short Term Training Programme On Research Trends In Robotics Mechanical Engineering Department of G H Patel College of Engineering & Technology (A
Charutar Vidya Mandal Institution) has organized a Short Term Training Programme on
Research Trends in Robotics during 5th-10th December 2016. 31 delegates from 15 Different
engineering institutions and industry participated in this training programme. Eminent
personalities like Prof. (Dr.) S K Saha (IIT Delhi), Dr. Vineet Vashista (IIT Gandhinagar), Dr.
Atul Thakur (IIT Patna), Dr. Subhasis Bhaumik (School of Mechatronics & Robotics, IIEST
Shibpur, Howrah), Dr. T A Dwarakanath (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai), Dr.
Himanshu Chaudhary (MNIT Jaipur), Dr. Jatin Dave (Nirma University, Ahmedabad), Dr. J. M.
Prajapati (M S University Baroda), Prof. (Dr.) Vinay Patel (BVM), Dr. Haresh Patollia (BVM),
Dr. Y. D. Patel (ADIT) and Mr. Ravi Teja (KUKA Robotics) delivered their expert talk. They
have discussed on insightful issues related robotics viz., development human centered robotics,
challenges in the development of humanoid robot, research gap in space robots, mechanism of
bioinspired robotics, research on fish robots, dynamic balancing of robot, development of
parallel manipulators for various machining and medical applications, research on legged robots,
robotics competition based education, Robo-Analyzer: A software for robotics research, current
and future of industrial robots, research on Exo-skeleton robots and assistive devices etc. An
industrial visit at Magna Cosma International, Sanand plant was also conducted to realize robots
working in industrial environment.
A Workshop On Non-Destructive Testing
Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a wide group of analysis techniques used in science and
industry to evaluate the properties of a material, component or system without causing damage.
As NDT does not permanently alter the article being inspected, it is a highly valuable technique
that can save both money and time in product evaluation, troubleshooting and research. Keeping
the same thing as a vision, a workshop was organized by the Mechanical engineering
Department and ISTE Student Chapter, GCET. The expert who visited college was Mr.Krutik Shah who is highly experienced person in NDT
training and services. He has served National and International industries in this area.
