Minnehaha Elementary has received a grant from the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) to implement School-Wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS). The Minnehaha SWPBS Team members who attended training include teachers: Amy Cavallin, Jill Bopp, Sarah Haavisto, Tracey Sandretsky, Sue Van Kekerix, and Christi Peterson. Rachel Howard, Counselor and I, Patricia Driscoll, Principal also attended the training. Other staff members may be on our team, but we are allowed to send only 8 people to training.

The grant provides six days of training the first year, for a team of eight, two days the second year and one day the third year. We also receive a two year subscription to the School-Wide Information System (SWIS) and SWIS training for five people. SWIS will enable us to assess our progress as we proceed with our implementation. SWIS provides surveys and a data collection tool to help us identify our needs and monitor our progress.

SWPBS does not give us a curriculum or set of interventions or practices, but it does give us a decision making framework that guides us in selecting and implementing the best evidence-based academic and behavioral practices. The underlying theme of SWPBS is teaching behavioral expectations in the

same manner we teach academics. Thus far, our team has created a matrix of what the expected behaviors look like, feel like and sound like in the non-classroom areas. We have also drafted a vision statement, and we have discussed some ideas for teaching and reinforcing these expectations. We will be asking the rest of the staff for feedback at our fall workshop. We need at least 80% of the staff to agree on these behavior expectations in order for this to be consistent and therefore effective. Implementation of SWPBS is a long process and is expected to require three years of work before we can say we have fully implemented SWPBS.

SWPBS has been in existence since the 80’s and studies show that schools that have successfully implemented SWPBS are less reactive, aversive, dangerous and exclusionary. They are more engaging, responsive, preventive and productive. They address classroom management and discipline issues. They have improved supports for more specialized assistance for emotional and behavioral disorders and mental health. Most importantly, they maximize academic engagement and achievement for all students.

SWPBS schools organize their evidence-based behavioral practices and systems into three tiers. All students receive supports at Tier 1. Those students who are not successful receive more intensive behavioral supports in Tier 2 in small groups or a

We are off to a great start for the 2013 – 2014 school year! We have hired new staff throughout the school district and are excited to have them work with our students and your children. They each bring different experiences and skills to the district and we look forward to their presence in the buildings.

The district continues to work at creating, partnering, and expanding opportunities for the students. This school year is no exception with offerings in many areas of interest at the high school level and opportunities for the elementary and middle school levels for students to grow. Listed are some of the opportunities and programs we are continuing and have offered for our students:

IN SILVER BAY:• Partnership with Cleveland Cliffs allowing students to

explore careers and careers in mining• Begin managing our school forest and harvest trees to be

sawn for shop classes• All high school students have last period study hall to

meet with teachers for assistance • Two sections of kindergarten• Millwright program with Mesabi Range College continues• New Classes: Global Cuisine, Intro to Engineering,

3D Art, Forensics• Ipads in the Title One program

AT TWO HARBORS HIGH SCHOOL:• After school homework helpers at THHS• Robotics• Middle level robotics• DECA• Courses offered using a blended model of on line and

classroom instruction• Welding program with Mesabi Range College continues• Girl’s only industrial technology courses• Individual Learn Plans moving to the 9th grade

DISTRICT WIDE:• Area Learning Center providing district wide after school

and Friday school help and skill development• Continue the Anti-Bullying initiative• Continue with Accelerated Reader

• New and continued offerings from Community Education are listed in the Good News

• Community service component as a graduation requirement• Continue to do NWEA assessment to see student growth

As you can read from the list above, the schools in the Lake Superior School District have a lot to offer. Throughout the school year we offer career and college information for planning into the future. As students of all grades gear up for back-to-school, it’s a great time to talk with your children or students about their goals for the future and encourage them to begin mapping out a path that can help them reach their post-high school and career goals. You can have this discussion with your children at any level to set goals for their future. October is College Knowledge Month and the high schools will be working with students learning how to enroll and about the many different programs available.

The district is planning on putting in more wireless access in the buildings. This year teachers will be using more technology in their classrooms to assist them in meeting the needs of all the students in their classes. They will use the technology as a tool for the presentation of the course material so that if a student missed a class they have access to what was presented or if they just need to see or hear the presentation again they have access.

Through Blandin Broadband grants we will also have more portable devices like tablets or Ipads available for students during the day and community education programs in the evening. We hope to expand the use of technology as a tool for both students and community members.

I am looking forward to another great year in the Lake Superior School District. I have been in all the buildings the first week and there is a lot of excitement and energy for the school year. It is great to have your children back in the schools. We are excited to have them!

highly individualized plan in Tier 3. Currently, our team has focused on Tier 1 behavior and supports.

Minnehaha became interested in SWPBS after researching information about bullying. Two years ago the district formed a Climate Committee and at the end of that first year, it was decided to focus on bullying awareness. We submitted a grant proposal to the Northland Foundation requesting $5000. We used it to bring Jim Jelinske to our district to speak to our teachers, paraprofessionals, bus drivers, custodians, cooks, students and parents. After Mr. Jelinske’s visit,

the Minnehaha staff wanted to do more and agreed to apply for a PBIS Grant. We were successful. We are just beginning the process and are very enthusiastic about this opportunity for our students at Minnehaha. We will continue to share our progress as we continue our work toward full implementation of School-Wide Positive Behavior Support.

A wealth of information and research regarding SWPBS is available on the PBIS site: www.pbis.org or you can contact Patricia Driscoll at the Minnehaha, 218-834-8221 ext. 8402, for more information.

7 TIPS FOR PARENTS OF STRUGGLING READERS

DID YOU KNOW?

1 in 4 Minnesota 3rd graders is failing to reach basic levels of literacy—that’s 15,000 children each year. Research shows that if students don’t read proficiently by 3rd grade, odds are they will not catch up.

R Reading is based on 5 factors: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

E Encourage kids to read anything—even if it isn’t a book. Magazines, comics or websites can engage children.

A Ask the teacher for work that is at the student’s developmental level if homework is consistently too hard.

D Don’t say no to your young reader. If your child is excited to read about dinosaurs, don’t push him or her to read something else.

I Increase motivation by making connections to the real world, like writing a letter to grandma or a favorite singer.

N Never concentrate solely on what is wrong. Focus on what your child CAN do. Build on his or her strengths.

G Generate a positive environment, keep the mood light and keep your eyes on the goal of enjoying reading.

ATTENTION SENIORSGRADUATION REQUIREMENTSA letter will be coming home from the THHS Guidance Office in the beginning of September regarding your student’s current graduation status. PLEASE review the material and contact the Guidance Office IMMEDIATELY if you are asked to do so in the letter. While the Guidance Office reviews each senior’s progress, it is imperative that individual students take responsibility for making sure they are on track with their requirements for graduation. It is an excellent idea for students and parents to review their transcript grades on the Parent Portal. If there are any questions or concerns about the accuracy of these grade/courses, PLEASE contact the Guidance Counselor, Kerri Persons, as soon as possible at 834-8201 Ext. 8206.

KHS Counselor Ashley Belanger, and/or Principal Joe Nicklay, will be meeting individually with Kelley students the first month of school to discuss graduation requirements.

ATTENTION JUNIORSPSAT TESTThe PSAT test will be given at THHS on Wednesday, October 16th. This test is recommended for juniors in the top 30-40% of their class as a preparation for taking college entrance tests later this year or next fall. More information will be provided to juniors later in September regarding this test, so students should pay attention to daily announcements and information provided in homeroom.

BRAG SHEETSIn preparation for completing college and scholarship applications, seniors are encouraged to fill out a Brag Sheet and make copies of this sheet. A Brag Sheet is a tool available in the Guidance Office that help students focus their thoughts regarding their own strengths, abilities, goals, etc. Brag Sheets can be used as a resource when students are asked to write essays for various applications and copies can also be given to staff when students ask them to write letters of recommendation on their behalf. While many of the application and scholarship deadlines are later in the year, it is a good idea for students to take time now to fill out a Brag Sheet so that they have it readily available

throughout the year when various deadlines approach. Many teachers find Brag Sheets particularly helpful when writing letters of recommendation and will request that students provide a copy for them.

In addition to filling out a Brag Sheet, students should also compile a list of all the activities (both at school and within the community) that they have been involved in during their 9th-12th grade years. Almost all applications request this information and having a list already compiled will be another helpful resource as deadlines approach.

KHS STUDENTS AND PARENTSSenior students planning on attending college next year should spend time in the career center; talk with the college recruiters visiting our school, and pay close attention to the daily announcements. Additional information and help can be obtained from the counselor. This winter there will be a college representative at KHS providing a session on how to fill out FAFSA forms (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The KHS scholarship booklet, containing information on local scholarships, will be available in the guidance office or in the high school library. The PSAT test will be given at WKHS on Wednesday, October 16.

TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More)Two Harbors High School will be offering a new course taught by the Assistant Principal (Jay Belcastro) and Principal (Brett Archer) as well as other staff and community members. The focus of the course is character development.

LAKE EFFECTSTwo Harbors “Lake Effects” AGE to age volunteers recently enjoyed a stunning September evening to work on beautification of the City of Two Harbors Sonju Trail sign area. The group worked on clearing the area, added two flower planters (filled with mums) and added landscape rocks/painted rocks to make the area more welcoming for residents and visitors alike. This activity is one of many AGE to age programs funded locally – encouraging intergenerational programming and activities. Other supported projects include Middle School Lego Robotics, School Garden, Teen to Community Volunteerism, Community Radio, and Mentoring Programs (ex. Two Harbors Experimental Aircraft Association activities with youth) For more information call 218-834-8201, ext 8227.
