G4/G5 QIP Upgrade and Encrypted Media Guide

Introduction

The G4 and G5 QIP supports 4 GB Fibre Channel, and may require a library firmware upgrade.

• The G4 QIP does not support BlueScale Encryption and key management.

• The G5 QIP supports BlueScale Encryption and key management.

The upgrade process involved in moving from the G2/3 to the G4/5, including use of media encrypted using G3 and G5, is reviewed in this guide.

Using Media Encrypted with G3 and G5 QIPs

Media containing data encrypted using the G3 QIP can be read by a partition using a G5 QIP; however, you cannot append to the tape using the upgraded QIP. To write to the tape with data encrypted using the G3 QIP, use a partition that uses the G3 QIP.

Note that you cannot read a tape containing data encrypted using a G5 QIP in a partition with a G3 QIP.

Firmware Upgrade

Make sure the library uses BlueScale firmware version 9.8 or higher. If it doesn’t, complete the firmware upgrade before following the next set of steps.

The G4/G5 QIP Upgrade

This guide includes the procedure for upgrading from a G2 or G3 QIP to a G4 or G5 QIP in a Spectra T120 or Spectra T950 library. Upgrading to the newer generation QIP requires the replacement of the pin inside the QIP bay as well as the QIP itself.

If You Need Assistance

If you need assistance with any part of this procedure, contact SpectraGuard Technical Support by calling 800.227.4637 or 303.449.0160, or by sending an e-mail to [email protected].

Materials and Tools Required

Note: After unpacking the upgrade kit, save the packaging. You will need it to pack up the old QIP and the above listed tools for return to Spectra Logic.

Estimated Time RequiredThis procedure takes about ten minutes.

The following tools and materials are provided in the upgrade kit:

• A new G4 or G5 QIP(not shown)

• A new QIP pin

• A 15-inch extender

• A 3/8-inch ratchet

• A 1/2-inch deep-well socket

• A 3/8-inch bolt extractor

You also need:

• A #2 Phillips screwdriver

Overview of QIP Upgrade Process

The G4/G5 QIP lets you connect your Spectra T120 or T950 library to 4Gb Fibre Channel HBAs and switches, which can support data transmission rates of up to 4 gigabits per second.

The entire upgrade process requires only these steps, described in more detail through this guide:

1. Remove the G2/G3 QIP.

2. Change the pin configuration in the QIP bay.

3. Install the new G4/G5 QIP.

4. Power on the library, which is now optionally networked into a 4Gb Fibre Channel HBA or switch.

5. Check your library firmware. Make sure it is revision 9.8 or higher. If it isn’t, upgrade your library firmware.

6. Return the G2/G3 QIP you just removed.

Removing the G2/G3 QIP

1. Use your backup software to stop backups running on the library.

2. Use the soft power button on the front of the library to shut down power to the library.

3. Shut off the AC power switch on the back of the library.

4. Remove any cabling connected to the G2/G3 QIP(s).

Note: If the QIP you are disconnecting is a Fibre Channel QIP (F-QIP) and cabled with Fibre Channel cables, you may want to mark the cabling in some way to remember which cable plugs in to Port A and which to Port B.

5. Use a #2 Phillips screwdriver to loosen the two captive screws on the side of the QIP.

Note: The screws are on the right side on a Spectra T950 library, and on the left side on a Spectra T120 library.

6. Pull outward on the QIP’s handle.

7. Set the QIP aside.

8. Proceed to Removing the G2/G3 QIP Pin on page 8.

Removing the G2/G3 QIP Pin

3. Look inside the QIP bay and locate the old pin; it’s the larger of the two pins protruding from either end of the board, and not the one at the end of the white 300-pin connector.

Note: In a Spectra T120 library, the pin is near the top of the board. In a Spectra T950 library, the pin is near on the bottom of the board.

4. Carefully reach the extractor inside the library and fit it over the pin, taking extra care not to damage the 300-pin connector.

5. Unscrew the pin until it comes loose from the board, then remove the pin from the QIP bay.

6. Proceed to Installing the G4/G5 QIP Pin on page 9.

1. Attach the ratchet to one end of the extender, and the bolt extractor to the other end of the extender, as shown in Figure 2.

2. Make sure that the ratchet is set for loosening. Figure 2 The assembled pin-removal tool.

Installing the G4/G5 QIP Pin

1. Remove the bolt extractor from the end of the extender.

2. Set the ratchet to tighten.

3. Attach the deep-well socket to the other end of extender.

4. Insert the G4/G5 QIP pin into the socket, as shown below.

5. Carefully reach the extractor inside the library and fit the pin into its hole.

6. Use the extender tool to screw in the pin until it is just finger-tight.

7. Carefully remove the tool from the QIP bay.

8. Proceed to Installing the G4/G5 QIP on page 10.

Installing the G4/G5 QIP

1. Carefully unwrap the G4/G5 QIP from its anti-static bag.

2. Use the QIP’s handle to place the QIP into its bay.

3. Push the QIP gently but firmly inward until it clicks into place.

4. Use a #2 Phillips screwdriver to tighten the two captive screws on the side of the QIP.

Note: The screws are on the right side on a QIP installed in a Spectra T950 library, and on the left side on a QIP installed in a Spectra T120 library.

5. Reattach any cabling that was connected to the QIP.

6. Proceed to Finish on page 11.

Finish

1. Turn on the AC power switch on the back of the library.

2. Turn on the library using the soft power switch on the front of the library.

3. Wait for the library to come ready.

4. Go to the front of the library and log in to the LC.

The Messages screen may indicate that you need to upgrade firmware.

5. See the library’s user guide for detailed instructions on firmware upgrades.

6. Once the firmware upgrade is complete, use your backup software to restart backups.

This completes the QIP upgrade procedure.

7. Proceed to Returning the G2/G3 QIP on page 12.
