ABSTRACT

To your knowledge Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan (PIS) first planned in the 7th Malaysia

Plan in collaboration with the Government of Malaysia and the World Bank. SPA com-

menced operations in February 1998 in Islamabad to lodge in SMT pending its permanent

campus. In july 1998, PIS began operating in the actual site of 100 acres in Mukim Plentong,

Johor Sultan named as Politeknik Johor Bahru (PJB) and in year December 2011 Sultan

named PJB as Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan (PIS).

Pasir Gudang is an industrial town located 35 km east of Johor Bahru in Malaysia. It

is the western end of the Johor Bahru metropolitan area. The population is around 70,000. It

is connected by the 4 lane Pasir Gudang Highway, a trunk road, and a railway line to Johor

Bahru. The main industries are transportation and logistics, shipbuilding, petrochemicals and

other heavy industries, and oil palm storage and distribution.

This investigation conduct for subject A4003 English For Technical Purposes. Our

English lecturer Miss Pooganeswari A/P Siteram Pillai giving a assigment for finding a prob-

lem and its solution too. By the observation we had we found Polytechnic student having big

problem to crossing the main road to go to Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan every day. As a solution

we had done questionnaires about building a overhead bridge in front of Politeknik Ibrahim

Sultan. We did a survey with 100 respondents and finding the solution, the problem they fac-

ing, what they want and need and what they think about overhead bridge.

By this report student safety will increase, accident in front polytechnic will reduce,

will have a good facilities for the student. The importance of the report is we will know impor-

tance of building overhead bridge in front of Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan. And also giving impor-

tant to student safety. The strength of doing this report is Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan student

giving their 100% support to the survey and done the questionnaires and the interview. The

weakness completing this assignment is time management with group member to finish this

task. We dont have enough time to completing this task because JRKV students were busy

with the big final project and sum other project. So its feeling really hard to giving a good

time management for doing this A4003 subject assignment. By the way with god bless we

had finish it on the time.

The major recommendation by this assignment is person in authority should in-

creases student safety with building a overhead bridge in front of Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan.

We had add some others importance and needs in this assignment. Hope it will take in care.

CHAPTER 1 : INTRODUCTION

An overhead bridge is a structure that crosses over another road. By overhead

bridge can avoid many road crossing accidents.

A road is a thorough fame, route or way on land between two places, which typically

has been paved or otherwise, improved to allow travel by some conveyance. Road consist of

one or sometimes two, roadways each with one or more lanes and also side any associatedsidewalks and road verges. Roads those are available for use by the public maybe referred

to as public roads or highways.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

We have conducted an investigation on report about buildings overhead bridge in

front of Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan. This investigation is to know is that overhead bridge make

student easier to go to Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan. On the other hand, we conducted this in-

vestigation to know well about needs of overhead bridge in front of Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan

for polytechnic students. We gain this responses by distributing the questionnaires to stu-

dents of Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan which is a Department of Electrical Engineering, Depart-

ment of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Design and Visual Communication and De-

partment Of Hospitality who stayed around Taman Cahaya Masai and who ever often using

the main road to cross by for going shop and more needs. By the way, based on the survey

responses, we prepared an appropriate graphs and charts to represents about the re-

sponses that we have collected from the respondents.

1.2 TERM OF REFERRENCE

The main road of polytechnic is a straight road which travelling by lots of heavy vehi-

cle every day. Its take minutes for student to cross the main road to go Politeknik Ibrahim

Sultan. A committed from DRI 5A was set up by Miss Pooganeswari A/P Siteram Pillai our

english lecturer for subject A4003 English For Technical Purposes on 17th JANUARY 2012

to carry out the investigation about building a overhead bridge in front of Politeknik Ibrahim

Sultan and to provide recommendations to prevent accidents and to safe the student while

crossing the main road.

This report is based on the findings of a survey conducted from 17 th JANUARY 2012

untill 26 FEBUARY 2012. Questionnaires were distributed to students of Politeknik Ibrahim

Sultan which is a Department of Electrical Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineer-

ing, Department of Design and Visual Communication and Department Of Hospitality. Opin-

ions from them have been gathered and compiled. Recommendations have also been given

on how to prevent road accident to students and get optimal results.

1.3 PURPOSE

This report is written to investigate the factors and effects while student cross the

main road to go polytechnic and make few recommendation on buildings overhead bridge to

prevent current situation. We also investigate the effect among the student who using the

road as the way to Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan. And we get good support from student to build

up overhead bridge in front of polytechnics.

1.4 SCOPE

The respondents of our survey are the students of Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan, who are

currently staying around polytechnics area. Our geographical area is Politeknik Ibrahim Sul-

tan area and the main Kong Kong road. There are four departments student in our survey

which is Department of Electrical Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, De-

partment of Design and Visual Communication and Department Of Hospitality. The survey

was conducted on 17th January 2012 until 26th February 2012. We just give the question-

naire to 100 polytechnic students.

CHAPTER 2 : METHODES / PROCEDURES

To carry out this investigative report, we make several copies of questionnaires. This

questionnaires consists total of 19 questions, which is divided by three main sub-questions,

that is YES/NO QUESTIONS, MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS, and LIKERT SCALE

QUESTION.

YES/NO QUESTIONS consists of ten questions, where the respondents are re-

quested to tick [/] for the appropriate answer. Meanwhile, the MULTIPLE CHOICE QUES-

TIONS consists of four questions, where the respondents are requested to circle the best

answer for the following question. Other than that, LIKERT SCALE QUESTION has five

questions.

We divide our group assignment into two groups. The first group are conduct in De-

partment of Electrical Engineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering students

while the other group conduct in Department of Design and Visual Communication and De-

partment Of Hospitality students. We take 5 minute to complete one questionnaire in each

correspondent. After we got the entire correspondent, we collect the entire questionnaire to

complete our task. We give thanks to the entire correspondent who gives us support to an-

swer our entire questionnaire.

2.2 INTERVIEW

We also have interview session with Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan student at polytechnic

canteen. We interview the students at their break time around 1pm until 2pm. Its taking

around 15 to 20 minutes to interview per person. We had interview 25 polytechnic students.

By the interview we had know what are students needs and what are the problem

they facing everyday and every time when crossing the Kong Kong road in front of polytech-

nic to go to their house, meet up friends or to go shop for buy the groceries things. And they

express their feeling how hard to cross the road when raining times. And they also tell usabout 19responsible heavy vehicle drivers.

They also tell us their experience about road accident in front of polytechnic. By the

interview session we found that overhead bridge really very important to students to cross

the road. The overhead bridge are a good facilities for students to go to Politeknik Ibrahim

Sultan every day.

2.3 OBSERVATION

This investigative report take place the main Kong Kong road in front of Politekink

Ibrahim Sultan. In additional, we also interview some students to get well know about the

problem and the importance of building the overhead bridge. We also get some news about

Polytechnic student accident while crossing the main road Kong Kong. We carried out this

investigation during student break time so those students have time to cooperate with us.

CHAPTER 3 : FINDING

We interview 100 Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan students as the respondent in various which is

Department of Electrical Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of De-

sign and Visual Communication and Department Of Hospitality. Places that serve to inter-

view respondent are sited in canteen, cafeteria, Taman Cahaya Masai and polytechnic area.

We interview student in their free time such like their free or break time around 1 pm until 2

pm. Apart from that, we also carry out the interview with respondent after finished class period.

We collect interview form that has been given to respondent within two hours to 4 hours.

99% students are in 16 25 age group because most of polytechnic students are en-

tering polytechnic after their secondary school so that most of them are above 19

years old and will finish their diploma when they are 23.

There is 1% 26 35 age group respondents and 0% of 36 45 and 46 and above, its

shows that there are no polytechnic students continue their studies at Politeknik Ibra-

him Sultan below 36 years old.

78% respondents are from Taman Cahaya Masai because it is near polytechnic and

situated in front of Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan.

Respondents staying at Taman Cahaya Masai are commonly will use the main road

to go Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan. So they often using the road daily.

12% respondent staying at polytechnic hostel so they will use cross the main road to

go shops at Taman Cahaya Masai to buy things.

10% of Respondent from Taman Scientex also giving their support to built overhead

bridge in front of polytechnics because sometimes they will use the main road to go

Taman Cahaya Masai for meets friends and doing assignment.

Question 1, 54% respondents said yes that easy to cross the main road in front of

Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan and 46% respondents said no that not easy to cross the

road in front of polytechnics.

Question 2, 67% respondents said yes to accidents happen often at the main road

and 33% respondents said no. So that we conclude that accidents happen at the

road so students need safety.

Question 3, 73% respondents said yes that should built overhead bridge to reduce

accidents and we found that was good idea but still 27% respondents said no to builtover head bridge for reduce accidents. When we interview the respondent why they

said no for built over head bridge they said they lazy to use the over head bridge.

Question 4, 79% respondents said that there is heavy vehicle community near the

polytechnics and we investigate that was true because Pasir Gudang is a industrial

area so that the will use heavy vehicle as a transportation. And 21% respondents

said there is no heavy vehicle community near the polytechnics. And we conclude

that 21% respondent is students who stay at Hostel and Taman Scientex.

Question 5, 56% respondents said yes and 44% respondents said no that there is

traffic congestion in front of the polytechnics. We found that there is traffic congestion

but its not making easy to cross the road.

Question 1, 25% respondents said they cross the road in a day around 2 times only.

But 29% respondents said they cross the road 4 times in a day. And same percent-

age that is 23% respondents said 6 times they cross the road and 23% also said that

they use cross the road 8 times in a day.

Question 2, 32% respondents said that take 1 minutes to cross the road but 35% re-

spondents said that they not sure its took how long to cross the road because they

said its depend on the road conditions. Most of times there is heavy vehicle in the

road so its really hard to crossing the road.

And 15% respondent said that take 3 minutes to cross the road and also 18% re-

spondents said its only take 2 minutes to cross the road.

Question 3, is about types of vehicle is always in the way so that 14% respondents

said cars, 7% respondents said motorcycle, and 21% respondents said all the vehi-

cle. By our group observation we also found that cars, heavy vehicle and motorcycle

always in the way.

Question 4, is very important to our survey because its about why is important of

overhead bridge.

20% respondents said that overhead bridge are for safety, beside that, 15% respon-

dents said its just like a facility for students and also 18% respondents said its to re-

duce accident.

Big number of respondents that is 47% students said all above that is they said over-

head bridge for safety, facility and to reduce accident too so that we think the over-

head bridge are so important in front of Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan.

Question 1, its about overhead bridge facilities allow you to go to polytechnic and

47% respondents are strongly agree and 33% are agree. And 12% respondent giving

neutral answer so they never finding the importance of overhead bridge. 2% stronglydisagree and 6 % disagree to the statement.

Question 2, 35% respondents strongly agree and 46% respondents agree that over-

head bridge can make easier to cross road and also can reduce road accidents.

There is 16% respondents giving neutral answer 2% respondents disagree and 1%

respondents strongly disagree. By the interview and observation that we have done

for this survey we found that overhead bridge really can make easier to cross road

and reduce road accidents. Not only that when rainy times the vehicle ride and drive

very fast and they never care about students crossing road and sometimes retain

rain water on the road by drivers who speed of fountains in the students dress while

waiting to cross the road.

Question 3, 51% respondents strongly agree that they feel safe using the overhead

bridge and 33% respondents agree to the statement. So that we conclude that over-

head bridge are very safeties for student to cross the road.

Question 4, will Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan students will using overhead bridge rather

than crossing the road. So, for the question the respondents giving good response

that 48% strongly agree and 36% are agree. And 13% giving neutral answer.

Question 5, 55% are strongly agree and 24% agree that is no problem to cross with

the overhead bridge. The rest respondents are strongly disagree, disagree and neu-

tral.

CHAPTER 4 : CONCLUSION

In conclusion, polytechnic students having big problem to cross the main road in front

of polytechnic. And students often using the road to go Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan. So by the

survey made by us we found that building overhead bridge in front of polytechnics is very

important. By building the overhead bridge can reduce the road accident and student are will

free more comfortable. Not only that its important for students safety. Besides that, student

can save road crossing time to. When rainy time student can safe their self at the overhead

bridge. By building overhead bridge students will have safe way to polytechnics.

CHAPTER 5 : RECOMMENDATIONS

Below shows a few recommendations on importance of building overhead bridge:

i. Students parents will be relax with student safety while crossing the road.

Parents always will worry about son or daughter safety at their studies

place. They always will worry their child will get any accidents and been

injured.

ii. Will safe students from accidents.

If have overhead bridge student no need cross the road.

iii. Can avoid traffic jam making by students when crossing the road.

When student cross the road sum vehicle will slow dont and it will be a

traffic jam and also accident will occur.

iv. Student wills safe time when using the overhead bridge to go Politeknik Ibra-

him Sultan.

Student no need waste their time while waiting for road clearance.

v. Heavy rain student can keep their self safe at the overhead bridge when they

on the way to home.

Raining time student will safe their self at the overhead bridge.

vi. Student will not mess up the road.

Student will not mess up the road while cross the road and the vehicle

drivers will be drive more carefully.
