InhisrecentstudyTheRiseofModernScienceExplained:AComparativeHistorythehistorianofscienceFlorisCohenoffersanewanalyticaltoolintermsofmodesofnature-knowledgetoexplaintheemergenceofmodernscience.Hearguesthatthreemodesofnature-knowledge–realistmathematical,kineticcorpuscular,andfact-findingexperimental–combinedtomakethispossible.CohentracestherootsofthefirsttwomodestotraditionsofancientGreekthoughtinAthensandAlexandriarespectively,andthelastasspontaneouslyarisingwithinRenaissanceEurope.ThisallowshimtoarticulateacomparativehistorywhichexplainswhymodernscienceemergedinEuropeandnotinanyoneoftheotherleadingcivilizations.

Embroiledinviciouscross-bordersectarianwars,theMiddleEastdominatesdailyheadlinenews.TurmoilintheMiddleEastcontrastsstarklywithencouragingsignsofdemocratictransitioninSoutheastAsiaevenifattimes,itseemsfragileasinMyanmar.ThePhilippinesandIndonesiahavecompletedtheirtransitionanddevelopedrelativelyopenbutmessy,flawedandhighlycontestedpoliticalsystems.Thailand’sauthoritarianresurgencehighlightsthethreatofdemocraticreversals.Whataccountsforthesedifferences?Thisseminarwilldiscussthreekeyfactors:theimpactofa

BaJin(1904-2005)isoneofthemostcelebratedauthorsoftwentiethcenturyChina.MostwidelyknownforhisnovelFamily(firstserializedin1931),BaJinwasananarchistinspiredbyKropotkinandBakuninwhocorrespondedwithsuchprominentinternationalfiguresasEmmaGoldman(1869-1940),AlexanderBerkman(1870-1936),andBartolomeoVanzetti(1883-1927).ThislectureexaminestheearliestperiodofBaJin'soutput,from1929-33,inlightofhisanarchistcommitments.AttentiontothemartyrologiesofJapanese,Italian-American,andRussianrevolutionariesBaJinwroteinthisperiodrevealthewayinwhichhisshortstoriesandnovelscombinedlettersandmemoirintoostensiblefiction.

Thetermcitizenshipcanbestbeunderstoodhistoricallyasithasdevelopedintothepresent.Overthelastcoupleofcenturies,itdevelopedfromtherightsanddutiesbetweenthenation-stateandsubjectinthecivicandmilitaryspheres.Sincethemiddleofthetwentiethcentury,ithasexpandedtoincludeasetofsocialandeconomicrights(righttofood,education,health,etc.)ofindividualstobeprotectedbylaw.Indeepeningthisrealmofrightsinwelfaretheory,thinkers,mostnotably,AmartyaSendevelopedthenotionof‘capabilities’affordedbysocietyandstatetohumans/citizensasthecriterionfortheexerciseofrightsandfreedom.Intheabsenceoftheapparatustogeneratesuchcapabilities,citizens’rightscouldremainmerelyonpaper.Philosophically,theenhancementofcapabilitiesratherthanafocusonmaximizinggrowthorutilitymaybeconsideredamoreappropriategoalforaplanetwithfiniteresources.

Theseargumentsgainparticularforcewhenappliedtoasustainableenvironmentandwhatitwouldmeantohaverightsofcitizenstoaprotectedenvironmentandfairshareofsustainableresourceuse.Whileadvocatingthecapabilitiesargument,theeconomistTimJacksonhasurgedthatcapabilitiesandrightsmustbeboundontheonehandbythescaleoftheglobalpopulationandontheotherbythefiniteecologyoftheplanet.Inorderforthecapabilitiesargumenttoprovidejusticenotonlyforthepooroftheplanetbutfortheenvironment,itisnecessarytore-evaluatethebasisfortruehumanflourishing.Intheseways,wemayreturntosuchnormativegoalsasLeopold’sLandEthicwhilealsoattendingtothevastnumbersofhumansacrosstheworldwhoareinrealityexcludedfromgenuinecitizenshiprights.

ThethemeofsustainablecitizenshipandenvironmentaljusticethusoffersawideagendaofresearchtopursueintheenvironmentalhumanitiesofAsia.Therightsofcitizenstobeabletoachievetheirgoalsoflivelihood,educationandfreedomsismatchedbytheresearchonwhatitmeanstohaveasustainableplanet.Thepreservationofbiodiversity;thevalueofanimallife;theprotectionofourhomeandworkplaceversusdegradingotherenvironments;theproblemsof

governanceandvestedinterests;themeans–whetherbygovernmental,activistoraesthetic—toenableandpromotesustainablejustice;theexplorationofalternativemodes,historicalandcontemporary,ofhuman-naturerelations;theinquiryintotheoptimalmeansofconservingandsharingscarceresourceswhetherbyspiritualorsecularmeans,aresomeofthetopicsundertakenbytheworkshopparticipants.

Journey of the Universe(link is external) Journey of the Universe narrates a 14 billion year story of universe unfolding, from the origin moment to planetary life. This is one telling of an epic story intended to inspire both awe and action through fusing the sciences and the humanities. Such an evolutionary cosmology encourages rethinking how humans are part of a macro scale universe, even as it promotes local practices creating biodiverse cultures, economies, and politics on the micro scale.

The Journey film and book invite us to reflect on our role and responsibility to the flourishing of communities within evolutionary cosmology. Theworkshopwillpresentsixpapersdiscussinghuman-naturehistoricalrelationshipsonsixmajorriversinAsia:theYangzi,Mekong,Indus,Ganges,Brahmaputra,andYellow.Theirvastlydifferentecologiesplayedanimportantpartinshapingtheriverinecommunitiesaswellasthewaysinwhichthecommunitiesattemptedtoutilize,controlandmanipulatetheriversinthepre-modernandmodernperiod.Therivershadasignificantroleinthesocio-economic,politicalandculturaldevelopmentonaregional,nationalandinternationalscale.Researchershaveattemptedtointerpretthecomplexhuman-riverrelationshipsfrommany

perspectives,includingpropertyrightsregimes,historyofdisasters,andfisheriesmanagement.

Continuouslyincreasinginternationalmigrationoflabor-thehighlyeducatedaswellaslowtomediumskilledworkers–families,studentsandrefugees-leadingtotheformationorexpansionofdiasporasinreceivingsocietiesontheonehand,andtheever-changingimmigrationandbordercontrolsinthedestinationpolitiesontheother,markstheglobalscenarioofinternationalmigration.Beginninginthe1990sthroughthetwenty-firstcentury,wehavewitnessedincreasedinternationaleconomicinterdependencecoexistingwith

steadilygrowingpoliticalbarrierstoglobalsocio-economicintegrationbetweentheGlobalNorthandtheGlobalSouth.Theformertrendofinterdependencehascomeofagethroughacombinationofseveraldrivers:tradeliberalizationthroughreductionoftradebarriers;ICTdevelopmentsthroughadvancesinmicro-electronicsandinformationtechnology;deregulationthroughproliferationofliberalizationpoliciesinbothdevelopinganddevelopedcountries;FDI-and-BPO–drivendiffusionofcapitalflowsbythemultinationalsaswellasindividuals,andsignificantchangesintheeducational,skillandgenderprofilesofthelaborforcegloballyacrosstheNorth-Southdivide.

Thelegaltraditionsofliberaldemocracyandhumanrightsreliedontheexceptionalismofthehumanwhetherderivedfromrationality,thesoul,orthe“dignityofman.”ThesenotionsoriginatedintheentanglementofChristiannotionsofthehumanwiththeformationofthesecularsphereinEuropeandspreadacrosstheworldtodefineaglobalpoliticalconfigurationoftentermed“modernity.”Rapidandunprecedentedecologicalchanges,however,shonelightontheinsufficiencyofaregimeofrightsrestrictedtohumans.Simultaneously,therecognitionofthedevastatingimpactofcolonizationonindigenouspeoplessparkedaglobalmovementtograntrightstothesecommunitiesanddrewattentiontothediversewaysindigenouscommunitiesrelatedwithnon-humans.Whilethefirstnon-humanstoreceiverecognitionaslegalpersonsmayhavebeencorporations,the“rightsofnature”extendtherecognitionoflegalpersonstorivers,mountains,andnon-humananimals.Thisworkshopaimstothinkabouttheglobalrightsofnaturemovementbytranscendingtheassumptionsofmodernityandlisteningnotonlyacrosshumanculturesbutalsoacrossspecies.

ThislecturetakesupcallsbyJ.K.Gibson-Grahamandotherstochallengerepresentationsofcapitalismasamonolithicentity,andinstead,tomakemorevisibletheeconomicmultiplicitythatisallaroundus,butwefailtosee.ManyscholarsalreadyunderstandthatChinesestatecapitalismdivergesfromWesternliberalcapitalism,andevendiffersfromthemodelof"EastAsianDevelopmentalState."Fewhaveexaminedhowpre-capitalistformsofeconomicpracticeareuneasilyincorporatedwithinChinesestatecapitalisteconomy,wheretheycontinuetooperateaccordingtonon-capitalistorevenanti-capitalistprinciples,suchaskinshipethics,human-divineexchange,divineandritualdebt-economies,communalinterests,andrivalriesofgenerosity,evenwhiletheyarealsopenetratedbycapitalism.Basedonfieldworkinruralandsmall-townWenzhouonthecoastofsoutheasternChina,IwillexaminewhatIcalla"ritualeconomy"ofreligiousandkinshipexpendituresthatharkenbacktoearlierpre-industrialcommercialeconomiesinimperialChina.Today's"ritualeconomy"tracesbacktotheSongDynasty,whenChinesepopularreligionsandanindigenousmarketeconomydevelopedintandem.ThispastextendsitsdynamicforcetothepresenteraofreligiousresurgenceandChina'sentryintoglobalcapitalism.
