    TAYLORIAN PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS

    ?

It was a 24 hours I will never forget. On a personal level, the birth of my beautiful son Hardy was an indescribable joy. On a professional level, the offer to Taylorian (just hours earlier) to stage the ultimate musical, the ultimate spectacle, brought a pride and a thrill which was unmatched.

A special moment not just for myself but the very loyal and close-knit production team – one which we all savoured.

As the scale of the coup dawned on us, so quickly did the scale of the task ahead. To bring what is widely regarded as the world’s number one musical to the Isle of Man and the beautiful Gaiety Theatre is not only a great honour but a great show of faith in Taylorian.

To The Really Useful Group for trusting us with our most gargantuan challenge to date, thank you – we won’t let you down!

As we complete our quartet of Andrew Lloyd Webber shows with his most famous work of all, there was only one man to whom we could turn. For a piece of theatre once more oozing style and class, we required a sophisticated director at the helm and under the majestic direction of John Cumberlidge, this brand new production will not disappoint you.

It also gives me great pleasure to welcome back renowned West End musical director Kelvin Towse to the Island after he conducted our British Isles Amateur Premiere of Sunset Boulevard last summer. With a wonderful creative and design team, this time enhanced by prosthetic and specialist ballet pointe work, I truly believe we have a visually magnificent show on our hands and one that will live long in the memory of Island audiences.

To YOU, the audience, a heartfelt thank you for your continued support. To our invaluable sponsors, this epic would not happen without you. To the whole production team and company, my sincere appreciation.

To Beata, my daughter Georgia and wider family, thank you for your love and support over the past 10 months.

Now sit back and take delight in this iconic masterpiece: ‘Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in to the power of the music of the night.’

It is 1911 and the contents of the Paris Opera House are being auctioned off. Present are the auctioneer, porters and bidders. Raoul, now seventy years old and in a wheelchair, buys a poster and a music box. As the auctioneer displays the Opera House chandelier, he explains that it is connected with the legend of The Phantom of the Opera. With a flash of light, the audience is flung back in time, when the Paris Opera was at its height.

    A C T O N E

We are thrust in the middle of a rehearsal for the opera Hannibal. Monsieur Lefèvre, the retiring manager of the Opera, is showing the new managers, Monsieurs Firmin and André, the great stage. As the prima donna, Carlotta, is singing, a backdrop falls to the floor, nearly killing her. The cry is raised, “It’s The Phantom of the Opera!” Upset, Carlotta refuses to sing.

Meg Giry, daughter of the ballet mistress, Madame Giry, suggests that her friend, Christine Daaé, take Carlotta’s place. Christine has been taking lessons from a mysterious new teacher.

At her triumph in the Opera is Raoul, a nobleman and patron of the Opera. Raoul recognizes Christine as a childhood friend. He comes backstage after the performance to escort her to dinner, but Christine tells him she cannot go, because her teacher, “The Angel of Music,” is very strict.

When Raoul leaves Christine’s room, the Phantom appears. Christine is lured into the bowels of the Opera House, where the Phantom will continue her lessons.

He leads her to his underground lair, where she sees a frightening vision of herself in a wedding gown. She faints, only to be awakened several hours later by the Phantom’s music on the organ. Creeping up behind him, she rips off his mask. Horrified, he takes her back to the surface.

The Phantom has sent notes to both the managers of the Opera, as well as Raoul, Madame Giry and Carlotta, which give instructions that Christine will have the lead in the new opera, Il Muto. The managers refuse to give in to the Phantom’s demands.

Il Muto proceeds as planned, with Carlotta in the lead, and Christine in a secondary role. As promised, disaster strikes - the stagehand Joseph Buquet is killed and Carlotta’s voice is stolen.

In the confusion, Raoul and Christine escape to the roof of the Opera House. There, with all of Paris around them, they pledge their love to one another. They cannot see the Phantom overhearing their vows of love. Enraged at Christine’s betrayal, the Phantom causes the final disaster of the night - the mighty chandelier comes crashing to the stage floor.

    A C T T W O

T he second act opens at a grand Masquerade Ball, held on the steps of the Paris Opera. No one has heard from the Phantom in six months. Christine and Raoul are engaged but are keeping it a secret; Christine keeps her engagement ring on a chain around her neck.

Suddenly, the Phantom appears, disguised as The Red Death, and delivers to the managers a score from his opera, Don Juan Triumphant.

At first, the managers refuse to perform the strange, disturbing opera. Then, with the help of Raoul, they devise a plan to trap the Phantom, using Christine as bait. Plans for Don Juan Triumphant, and the trap, are made. Christine visits the grave of her father. There on the grave stands the Phantom, beckoning her to join him. Raoul appears and takes her away.

At last, the opening night of Don Juan Triumphant arrives. The theater is surrounded by guards and police eager to catch the Phantom. As the opera comes to its end, the Phantom takes the place of Piangi, the lead singer. He confronts Christine on stage during the performance, and escapes with her once more to his labyrinth below the Opera House.

In a last confrontation, the Phantom gives Christine a choice: stay with him forever, or he will kill Raoul. Her decision brings to an end the story of The Phantom of the Opera.

T he Phenomenon that is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera marks John’s tenth consecutive production with Taylorian, and after fourteen years and seventeen major productions in the Gaiety Theatre, Phantom has been, without doubt, the greatest technical and emotional challenge.

Almost thirty years after the original, definitive production, the Summer of 2015 has given John the chance to explore this exhilarating story with its ravishing and magical score. John’s career began in theatre, television and cabaret - in London and the provinces, USA and Germany. West End Credits include Underneath The Arches at The Prince of Wales Theatre, La Cage Aux Folles at the London Palladium and The Wizard of Oz for the RSC at The Barbican and Stratford. Television work includes Love Story, Parkinson, Halls of Fame with Roy Hudd, A Night of 100 Stars, Royal Variety Shows, many award ceremonies and cabaret in the Talk of London revues.

Provincial theatre credits include: My Fair Lady, Abracadaver with Frank Langella, The Boyfriend and many others.

As a director and choreographer, John has received critical acclaim for his productions of Follies, Oliver!, Kiss Me Kate, Kismet, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Scrooge-The Musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, Back to the 80’s, Sweeney Todd, Mack and Mabel, My Fair Lady, The King and I, La Cage Aux Folles, We Will Rock You, The RSC Wizard of Oz, Barnum, Hello Dolly, Jekyll and Hyde-The Musical, and Me and My Girl for which he received the best director award at the First International Festival of Musical Theatre.

For John, 2014 became the year of the 1950s movie musical with Sunset Boulevard for Taylorian at the Gaiety Theatre followed by Irving Berlin’s vintage musical White Christmas for STOS Theatre Company at the Lyceum Theatre, Sheffield.

John also specialises in period hair design and make-up. He has his own small company which styles and coordinates video and television productions. He has also achieved great personal success and satisfaction tutoring the NODA musical performers courses at Warwick and Loughborough Universities where musicals studied included: Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, West Side Story, Sunset Boulevard and Sweeney Todd.

K elvin is delighted to be back on the Isle of Man once more after conducting the British Isles Amateur Premiere of Sunset Boulevard, for Taylorian, last summer. He is still the Musical Director for the UK National tour of Blood Brothers, a post he has held since 2008. He has also been Musical Director for productions at some of the country’s top repertory theatres such as Bristol Old Vic, Leicester Haymarket Theatre, Manchester Library Theatre, Nottingham Playhouse and Oldham Coliseum where, amongst others, he was Musical Supervisor for the English premiere of The Steamie.

He spent five years working at Derby Playhouse, where he was MD for The Entertainer, A Christmas Carol, Hooray for Hollywood, Romeo and Juliet, Animal Farm, As You Like It and Treasure Island.

As a composer at Derby Playhouse, Kelvin wrote scores for Dracula, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Frankenstein, Merlin and the Winter King, Serial Killers, Arabian Nights and Henceforward for which he

also designed the sound. Kelvin was Associate Musical Director/Conductor for the national tour of Whistle Down the Wind and made his West End debut as MD for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Outside of theatre, Kelvin has scored videos for a number of business clients including BAE Systems, Oldham Chamber of Commerce, Secure by Integrity, Toy Options and Red Run Media. He also produced and scored the music for the highlight of Oldham MBC’s 150th year celebrations, The Oldham Story – a Theatrical Time Travel Experience.

For TV, Kelvin has composed scores for the BBC’s Panorama series and Channel 4’s Dispatches. Kelvin’s classical work, Hogmanay - A Suite for Orchestra, Choir & Bagpipes is published by Europa Edition and his composition A British Isles Fantasia for Orchestra and Choir had its premiere at the University Concert Hall, Cambridge last year.

For the ultimate musical, read the ultimate dream, for that’s what this would mean to our founder Patrick Taylor. To be awarded the licence to stage the world’s number one musical – a premiere no less – with the personal endorsement of Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s management team is an honour no-one could have envisaged so soon after Taylorian was formed in 2007.

How fitting that this is the company’s tenth show – what progress, what a journey, what an accolade!

Certainly Patrick Taylor would have scarcely believed what the company has achieved in less than a decade – all in his name, all based on the foundations he laid, all inspired by his joy and simple passion to produce quality theatre.

The Committee of the Manx Festival of Music, Speech and Dance Festival congratulate Taylorian Productions on bringing this fabulous production of Phantom of the Opera to the Gaiety Theatre for the enjoyment of Manx audiences. Our 124th annual Festival, affectionately known as ‘the Guild’, attracts 1,700 participants across the genres.

The Festival presents a great variety of entertainment, featuring some fantastic vocal performances from individual singers and choirs, as well as fabulous set-pieces from solo musicians, bands, dancers and groups, and of course there is plenty for those who have a love of the spoken word and drama.

One of the most popular classes includes over 70 well-known songs from many of the best-loved musicals. Some of tonight’s cast are regular competitors, and we would love to see you at the Festival too.
