Introduction

Physical activity has always been an important part of education at AUB. In his assessment of the academic year 1927-28, President Bayard Dodge described it as “a successful one in the athletics life of the University. . . [It] has given an opportunity for an increasing number of students of mediocre ability to compete. . . This, we feel, is a distinct advance in the athletic life.” (MainGate, Winter 2007, Vol. V.) This advance has been maintained ever since.

“Athletics at AUB” is the theme of the President’s Club dinner booklet this year. Most of the pictures in it are from the AUB Archives and Special Collections in Jafet Library.

The club would like to thank the archives for its support as well as all the individuals who have, through their personal testimonies or photo collections, contributed to this booklet.

Far, far above the watersOf the deep blue sea,

Lies the Campus of the College,Where we love to be.

Far away, behold Kanisah!Far beyond, Sannin!

Rising hoary to the heavens,Clad in glorious sheen.

Chorus:Look before us!

Shout the chorus!See the banner wave.AUB in thee we glory:

Make us true and brave. From Iraq or from ArabiaFrom the banks so green

Of the great Egyptian river,Or from Palestine;

From the waters of AbanaLebanon serene.

We salute thee, Alma Mater!Oriental Queen.

Hail to thee, our Alma MaterWe would ever be

Worthy children. Make us faithful,Faithful e’er to thee!

The President’s Club

We often speak of the many commitments of this University: to the faculty and staff, to the alumni, to our neighbors, and to the peoples of Lebanon, the Middle East, and beyond. But first and foremost must be our commitment to the students. It may seem obvious, but it is worth repeating again and again: providing the best education possible to our students is the reason for everything else we do.

As I begin my second year as president, I am ever more cognizant and appreciative of the many individuals and groups that I can count on to support me in this most important mission of the University. The President’s Club is one of these, with members of such steadfast devotion that I am humbled to be their honorary president.

As we all know, the educational experience goes beyond simply what is taught. There are classroom and laboratory facilities, exam rooms, and study areas, and then there is everything else that makes the university experience rich: dormitory life, athletics, cultural events, and spaces to meet and interact with peers.

The mission of the President’s Club is to improve student life, and this has been accomplished in so many different ways, touching on all the myriad facets of campus living. The students, even if they are unaware of it, are lucky to have the support of the President’s Club, which has so often stepped in to fund a worthy project or activity that otherwise would have had to wait.

For all you do and will continue to do, my heartfelt thanks to Laila Baroody, the Executive Committee, and all the faithful members of the President’s Club.

You all must know how your continued support of the President’s Club—whether by being a life member or renew-ing your annual membership, or adopting a bench on campus—has been beneficial to AUB students. It has provided them with improved facilities in and out of the classrooms, pleasant and comfortable lounges, air conditioned dormi-tories, on-line computer facilities for their use, and assistance for their various clubs. Musical events and plays staged by and for the students have also been sponsored by the President’s Club.

Your presence here this evening is another manifestation of your commitment to the President’s Club mission, which is to improve the quality of life of AUB students on campus. It will enable us, through the additional funds collected, to finance new projects, the implementation of which is badly needed by the AUB student body.

Thank you for being with us.

In 1933, there were more than 130 members at the American University of Beirut Tennis Club, but only 13 of them were women. To encourage more women to use the courts, a faculty member offered to give them tennis lessons and they were allowed to use President Dodge’s tennis court on Fridays. In 1935, there were 16 tennis courts on campus.

Over the years the Office of Student Affairs has worked closely with the Committee of the President’s Club to provide AUB students with facilities to make their experience on our campus a rich and happy one. This year is no exception. Thanks to the President’s Club the Hostler Student Center will be furnished with four large LCD screen TVs and four DVDs to be strategically placed in the fitness areas. The swimming pool can also boast a mobile lift for the handicapped. This will ensure that those who have difficulty with walking can enter and exit the pool safely and enjoy swimming. This falls in line with our mission to provide opportunities for all students without discrimination. Also thanks to the President’s Club, Mary Dodge Hall will provide this year a computer and study center for students, which will be particularly appealing for the female residents on lower campus.

On behalf of the AUB students, I wish to express my warm gratitude not only for the material contributions of the President’s Club, but also for the hard work and dedication of its members to ensure that our students may have a more abundant life.

Sincerely,Maroun KisirwaniDean of Student Affairs

“During the early fifties and under the leadership of Abdel Sattar Traboulsi, the varsity basketball team was composed of excellent and dynamic players. They were able to compete with first class teams in Beirut during this period. Later on these same players became the leading corps of the Lebanese national basketball team, which participated in many international competitions.”

In a MainGate article (Winter 2007, Vol. V, No. 2), “Pre-Ping-Pong: Abdel Satar Traboulsi Kicks Off Sports at AUB and in Lebanon,” Aleksandra Majstora Kobiljski wrote about the stimulating effect of Abdel Sater Traboulsi on the develop-ment of sports at AUB. From 1927 Traboulsi, serving as assistant director of physical education in the preparatory section (1927-32—Harry William Foot was direc-tor) and later as director of athletics (1933-75) was the main force behind the growth of sports at AUB. He was followed for one year by Labib Butrus before the mantle was taken up in 1984 by present Director of Athletics Ghaleb Halimi. Kobiljski’s article is repro-duced below.

In fall 1929, a delegation of 22 athletes from the Egyptian University visited Beirut for a week of athletic contests in football, basketball, track and field, and tennis. The following spring, ten AUB athletes visited Cairo for a similar series of events. These visits, initiated by Abdel Satar Traboulsi and officially sponsored by the University, were not only the “talk of the campus.” They also provided a significant impetus for the development of sports at AUB. These con-tests would be fairly unremarkable today when AUB sport teams compete interna-tional and locally and AUB students are of-ten seen running along the Corniche. But back then, this sports exchange was note-worthy for several reasons: it took place before commercial air travel and it was an indication that in just two years Director of Athletics Traboulsi had strengthened

AUB teams to the point that they were able to compete successfully against teams from Cy-prus and Egypt. The increasing popularity of sports at AUB played an important role in the development of a culture of physical education in Lebanon.

For more than 40 years, Traboulsi, the cham-pion of Lebanon and the Arab world in pistol shooting competition, was the driving force be-hind AUB sports. He joined the University in 1927, and because of his youth and enthusiasm quickly became a role model for students, en-couraging them to stick with sports even after they had satisfied the mandatory requirements.

Physical activity had long been an important part of education at AUB since it was widely believed that competitive sports would improve and strengthen young men’s character. Field Day was first introduced as early as 1880, and became a formally organized public event a decade later. Despite the popularity of Field Day, however, there was not much else in the way of organized sports on campus.

There were sporting events such as football, bicycle races, tennis matches, and basketball games in Beirut. Some of the first such recorded meetings actually took place at AUB. After the end of World War I and the economic recovery of the second half of the 1920s, more students flocked to the University. With Traboulsi’s encouragement, many for-eign students discovered sports for the first time. In 1927-28, President Bayard Dodge wrote that the academic year “has been a successful one in the athletics life of the University, owing mainly to the enthusiasm and organizing ability of the physical director. . . This has given an opportunity for an increasing number of students of mediocre athletic ability to compete, whereas heretofore there has been a tendency for only the better athletes to take part. This, we feel, is a distinct advance in the athletic life.”

By 1933, AUB had a number of basketball, football, and volleyball teams for men, in addition to a women’s basketball team. Two years later, there were 16 tennis courts on campus, a volleyball court, an indoor roller skating rink, a bowling alley, a gymnastics room, and three outdoor basketball courts, a quite unique collection of sports facilities in

Lebanon at the time. AUB athletes participated in national meets. In 1931 AUB athletes took part in an all-Lebanon track and field meet at Rayak, en-tering nine of the ten events scheduled and wining seven first-place medals and two second-place spots. In 1932, the varsity team won three out of the five matches it played against local sports clubs.

In the interwar period, tennis was the sport of choice especially for faculty and alumni, although a number of students and frequent campus visitors were also often spotted on the tennis courts, located at that time behind College Hall where the Jafet Library is today. As the library was then on the second floor of College Hall, students spent many sunny days study-ing in the library and wishing they had the time to indulge in a game or two. Women students from the period often remember the breathtaking view of the Mediterranean and the tennis courts that they enjoyed from the balcony of the Women’s Lounge. In 1933 there were more than 130 members of the AUB Tennis Club, but only 13 of them were women. To encourage more women to use the courts, a faculty member offered to give women tennis lessons first in the Handball Room in West Hall and then on the tennis courts. In addition, women students were allowed to use President Dodge’s tennis court on Fridays, a privilege that earned them the envy of male students. In 1939, the AUB Tennis Club had to turn away members because the courts were regularly overbooked. That same year the Lebanese Championship was formally organized and held at AUB. Nadim Majdalani became the Lebanese Tennis Champion, a position he would hold for a number of years to follow.

In 1935, the new swimming facilities on the rocks below the campus proved to be a great success. Many students participated in various water sports, from swimming and free jumps to water polo. Women students had access to both the faculty and student beaches. (They were later merged in the 1940s.) Traboulsi also introduced training for lifeguards, which continued for decades. In 1952 the first woman student became a lifeguard.

During the 1940s, Traboulsi promoted a wide range of sports and introduced interested students to a number of new sports such as Ping-Pong, archery, badminton, hockey, bodybuilding, and skiing. His success at AUB contributed to his reputation off campus, and he became known as the consummate physical education professional. A commentary on the state of sports in Lebanon published in the Revue du Liban in December 1946, says it quite well: “Sport is much ne-glected in Beirut, except at the American University, and this is thanks to the excellent coach, Abdel Satar Traboulsi. His technique merits that we entrust him with the physical education of the entire Lebanese youth.”

Traboulsi’s tireless efforts to promote competitive and recreational sports on campus started bearing fruit. AUB alumni such as Michel and Ernest Farah, Joe and Maurice Tabet, and Labib and Nadim Majdalani dominated the tennis scene. These were men whose appreciation and passion for sports had been nurtured by Traboulsi in the 1930s. They

had all been members of varsity teams during their years at AUB. The Lebanese Tennis Championships continued to be hosted at AUB throughout the 1940s, and at the same time, the AUB varsity teams were regularly beating other local and international teams. (AUBites are particularly proud of their victory over the Cyprus football championship team in 1946.) When the Lebanese Olympic Committee was founded in 1947, it was in part the result of Traboulsi’s two decades of passion and commitment.

Today, the Athletics Department is an important part of student life at AUB and one of the most active members of the University Sports Federation of Lebanon (FSUL), as well as many other local and international clubs and sports bodies. Traboulsi was often heard to say to AUB students, “It is not important to win, but to take part.” Traboulsi’s vision of sports at AUB lives on, as the Athletics Department provides all students, regardless of their ability or previ-ous experience, the possibility of getting involved in sports. In spring 2007, the opportunity for AUB student athletes was further enhanced when the Charles W. Hostler Student Center, a 93,000 square foot hub for sports and student activities, opens its doors.

The Charles Hostler Student Center (CHSC), jump started by an 11.5 mil-lion dollar gift from Charles W. Hos-tler, opened its facilities for use on May 23, 2008, leading in, with its ultra modern design, a new and bright era for sports and fitness at AUB.

While the center’s facilities extend beyond the main building to include the AUB Beach and the refurbished track and Green Field, they also com-prise health and fitness rooms, an in-door 25-meter long swimming pool, a multi-use gymnasium, three basketball courts, indoor soccer and handball courts, two squash courts, student ac-tivity rooms, a 280-seat auditorium, a café, an internet room, and an under-ground parking area for around 200 cars.

“The Charles W. Hostler Student Center is a cutting edge architectural design overlooking the Mediterranean Sea under the gaze of Lebanon’s proud mountains. The Hostler Center has already become a major landmark on AUB’s lower campus,” said Dean of Student Affairs Maroun Kisirwani. “It strives to encourage continued participation in a healthy lifestyle throughout a student’s life through a blend of competition, lifetime activities, and health educa-tion,” he added.

Dean Kisirwani also believes that “the Hostler Center is taking student life at AUB to new heights and will ensure that the University remains ahead of its regional competitors.”

The center, he said, allows large “gatherings, a fact that will make the center a vibrant location on lower campus for many years to come. The Hostler Center is certainly a setting that AUB students and alumni will be proud of.”

The center’s compound is entirely smoke-free and possesses an environment-friendly design minimizing heat and cooling needs by recycling water and employing energy-efficient lighting. Solar panels installed at the site heat the indoor pool and a green plant cover filled with landscaped vegetation maintains the coolness of the entire area during hot summer days.

This user- and environment-friendly design won one of the 2009 Institute Honor Awards for Architecture of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for its “non-hierarchical synthesis of architecture and landscape to create a set of richly varied and environmentally diverse spaces for people to gather at all hours.” The Charles W. Hostler Student Center was designed by Vincent James Associate Architects with associate architect Samir Khairallah and Partners.

“This award brings recognition to the professionalism of AUB’s Facilities Planning and Design Unit team, working in close cooperation with the architects of Vincent James Associate Architects, as well as to the aspirations of the Univer-sity to create a world-class campus in the heart of Beirut. Congratulations to all involved in this remarkable achieve-ment,” said President Peter Dorman when commenting on the award.

The American Institute of Architects is a leading professional membership association for licensed architects, emerging professionals, and allied part-ners. Established in 1857 and based in Washington, DC, AIA is known for recognizing individuals and institutions for their outstanding achievements in architecture, and the annual Institute Honor Awards for Architecture of the American Institute of Architects is a good example of such honors. The AIA jury reviewed over 500 projects

submitted for this award this year.

The award puts the Hostler Center in the brilliant company of eight other recipients of National Honor Awards of the American Institute of Architects in 2009: the Basilica of the Assump-tion (Baltimore Cathedral), Baltimore, designed by John G. Waite Associ-ates, Architects PLLC; the Cathedral of Christ the Light, Oakland, Califor-nia, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, with associate architect Kendall/Heaton Associates for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland; Museo del Acero, Monterrey, Mexico, designed by Grimshaw Architects with associate architect Oficina de Arqui-tectura for Museo del Acero, A.C.; Plaza Apartments, San Francisco, de-signed by Leddy Maytum Stacy Archi-tects, with associate architect Paulett

Taggart Architects for Public Initiatives Development Corporation; Salt Point House, Salt Point, N.Y., designed by Thomas Phifer and Partners for Cristina Grajales and Isabelle Kirshner; the Gary Comer Youth Center, Chicago, designed by John Ronan Architects for the Gary Comer Youth Center; the Lavin-Bernick Center for University Life, New Orleans, designed by VJAA, with associate architect Wayne Troyer, architect for Tulane University; and The New York Times Building, New York City, designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop with associate architect FX-FOWLE for Forest City Ratner Companies.

AIA’s weekly newsletter, AIArchitect of January 9, 2009 states, “The selections focus on structures in which forms tread lightly on the earth.” It also says that the recipients of the award “share a commitment to offering sanctuary for building users.”

“The award recognizes excellence in architecture and is the AIA’s highest design award for completed projects,” said AUB’s Vice President for Facilities Samer Maamari. “Also, it further ac-knowledges the dedication of and the quality service delivered by our staff, who worked tirelessly to make this project possible.”

“The Charles Hostler Student Cen-ter brought major enhancement to the AUB campus and has become the heart of student activities on lower campus. The green belt of the AUB campus, with its lush greenery com-bined with the vegetation of the rest of the campus is a stark contrast to the rest of Beirut and viewed by all as a green oasis inside a dense urban fabric; now we have complemented this oasis with a jewel named the Charles Hos-tler Student Center,” Maamari said.

Charles W. Hostler (MA ’55) was an AUB graduate student in international relations from 1953 to 1955. Having lived in Lebanon for a total of nine years between 1953 and 1967, he dreamed constantly of building a student center for the University.

A self-made man who struggled during the Great Depression of the 1930s, Hostler sold newspapers at the age of 13 while still in school. He served as a colonel in the US Air Force during World War II. Active in the international busi-ness scene, in 1989 he was appointed by President George H. W. Bush as US ambassador to Bahrain, a position he held during the 1990-91 Gulf War. Becoming a successful businessman through his business acumen, he later became a philanthropist constantly active in non-profit organizations and civic and educational causes.

The Bench Campaign

The AUB Benches, scattered across upper campus and framed by the wooded terraces, provide the most beautiful vistas of the Mediterranean. Students, alumni, friends, faculty, and staff have long cherished these scenic spots. The “Adopt a Bench” campaign sponsored by the President’s Club ensures the perpetuity of these special memories.

There are still some benches on upper campus waiting to be adopted. It is planned to have more benches on lower campus which, we are sure, will appeal to athletes, engineers, and busi-ness school graduates.

For more information contact [email protected]

Add your name or that of a loved one to the list below.
