Art Creates a City
As the creative culture of Nashville flourishes in 2014, we see our city
thrive in conversation with a larger contemporary dialogue, embracing the diversity of art.
Our major institutions bring color to the palette: OZ Nashville’s bold strokes complement the nuances of existing landmarks such as the Frist Center, Cheekwood, Tennessee State Museum, and the Parthenon. The collection at the Music City Center

showcases regionally grown influence with an international impact. TPAC and the Schermerhorn continue to bring world-renowned acts and musicians into the very heart of our city.
The growth of the Downtown Arts District and the Wedgewood/Houston area leads them to challenge and cultivate each other, creating simultaneous discussions on First Saturday Art Crawls. The Arts Company, The Rymer Gallery, and Tinney Contemporary—5th Avenue’s steadfast trio—are bolstered by longstanding Arcade anchors such as COOP, 40AU, and Blend to foster a diverse range of exhibitions, pop-up events, and art happenings.
Wedgewood/Houston, adding Zeitgeist, David Lusk, and Track One to an already impressive lineup, focuses on forward-thinking and interdisciplinary approaches to art making.
We see a surge in lectures and community engagement projects from visiting artists at our vibrant university scenes and growing opportunities for dance, spoken word, and performance crowds. Community art-making spaces harmonize with community education programs, providing traditional craft, skills, and workspace for those who want to push their practice or start a creative business. As the heart of the Heritage Movement becomes grounded in the artists, entrepreneurs, and visionaries who walk our streets and call us home, there has never been a better time for it.
It’s an exciting time to engage the arts in Music City and so many ways to bring the experience home with you. Let the spotlights included here guide your exploration and open doors. Whether traditional or avant-garde, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

PUBLIC ART
Nearly four years ago, Nashville experienced a 36-hour period of rainfall that broke every
record conceivable. The skies opened up and drenched the city in a relentless deluge, flooding much of the city. Metro Arts decided to honor those stricken by the flood with public art. Six local and regional artists were chosen to interact with specific neighborhoods affected by the flood. The artists participated in community meetings and citizen input sessions that informed their final artwork designs. From this process, six unique artworks were installed in 2013. These artworks are found off the beaten path, tucked into neighborhoods: two alongside the Cumberland River near Shelby Bottoms and Two Rivers Park, one near the Harpeth in Bellevue, one in Bordeaux near Whites Creek, one near Richland Creek, and one in Antioch near Mill Creek. The Watermarks artworks serve as places for reflection, renewal, and healing, and each is worth the trek to see!
For more on these and other public art, visit publicart.nashville.gov.

First saturday art Crawl, downtown
Located on 5th Avenue of the Arts in Downtown Nashville (between Union St. and Church St.) and at the Arcade.
This downtown happening is the oldest and most well known creative crawl in the city, encompassing the galleries along 5th Avenue of the Arts and inside the Arcade. Every month, First Saturday finds throngs of gallerygoers heading downtown to check out the latest exhibits at 5th Avenue stalwarts like Tinney Contemporary, The Rymer Gallery and The Arts Company; university satellites like Watkins Arcade Gallery and Open, and cutting-edge contemporary art spaces like COOP. Live music and food trucks complete the mood.
www.5thAvenueoftheArts.com
arts & MusiC @ wedgewood/Houston
Nashville’s newest art crawl also claims the first Saturday of each month, but this one takes place south of downtown in the industrial warehouses and newly built
galleries in the Wedgewood/Houston neighborhood. The heart of this event can be found in the gorgeous, sprawling white spaces of galleries like David Lusk and Zeitgeist, but its soul resides in the repurposed factories and warehouses that galleries like threesquared, Seed Space, and Ground Floor call home. The Julia Martin Gallery and 444 Humphreys feature rotating exhibits, and the musical events and happenings at spaces like Ovvio and Track One make this a crawl that is well worth the drive.

Franklin art sCene
In Franklin, TN—about 30 minutes south of Nashville—the Franklin Art Scene event claims the first Friday of every month for a crawl which boasts over 30 galleries and artists’ studios sprinkled throughout the lovely architecture in Franklin’s historic downtown core where a number of the stops are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. From blown glass to turned wood to mixed media work, the Franklin Art Scene features fine arts alongside handmade crafts in an atmosphere that suits both the experienced collector and the amateur connoisseur. It’s a free event, but spring for the $5 trolley for the full experience.
