to Titirangi Community Arts Council

2010 Emerging Artist AwardsWelcome to Titirangi Community Arts Council’s third Emerging Artist Awards exhibition.

The Emerging Artist Awards are for those that are still nding their ‘art feet’ with two fortunate artists coming away with an arts grant to help further their arts careers.

A panel of 3 respected judges will award two grants to fresh new talent in Waitakere City – one for $1000, including a plaque that the artist will hold for one year, and the other for $500.

This concept was developed to bring out our hidden (emerging) Waitakere talent – the ones that have had little or no exposure to the public - and assist them by guiding them through a number of processes they will need to understand as they emerge: applications for awards, competitions, funding – exhibiting – advertising – building databases of buyers, galleries etc.

Gallery36 and Upstairs Gallery would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the nalists and this years winner and runner up.

This work stems from my involvement with nature and gardens. It explores my interest in natural forms and patterns. This piece represents growth and abundance. I don’t really think about meaning, I enjoy the physicality of making something, meaning comes later. People bring their own thoughts and feelings to it. The motivation is just to make it rather than about ideas and concepts.

I have recently become interested in photography and I am amazed by the world around us. I try to capture the beauty that sometimes people miss in their busy lives, and aim to show them this in my work. I have always been interested in animals which is why I chose to feature one in this work. I used a broken mirror while it was raining to create this piece as I found the effect this created interesting.

My work is inspired by memories of childhood and the fragility of life itself.

As a Niuean artist, I use my cultural identity to inuence my perception on life and the roll we play in it. The piece was inspired by the natural forces of nature, the gift to pro create and the divine roll of motherhood.

My background in art began at Wanganui Community College where I did a three year course, Foundation & Certicate in Craft & Design. Since then I have been lucky enough to get work both in Auckland and overseas where I gained further knowledge and understanding of clay. Recently I am enjoying doing my own work, which has leaned more towards sculpture. Music, people & my environment inspire me.

I have had a strong interest in painting since childhood but began painting more seriously in 2005. Portraits dominated my early works but since moving to Titirangi, the dramatic landscapes and rich history of the region have inspired my work. My work ‘Cornwallis No.1’ is inuenced by the Orpheus shipwreck. I present Cornwallis in a melancholic light. The cloud formations have a foreboding, ethereal quality representative of the tragic history.

I am a Russian born artist who travelled a lot and nally found home in New Zealand. In my art I use realistic recognizable objects presented in a romantic and dreamy way trying to reect eternal, timeless qualities of nature. I am a self taught artist and developed my abilities through careful observation and practice. I take a lot of photographs and always research my subjects before bringing them to canvas. In 2007 I won the Hetty Boere award and a merit award in acrylic. I am grateful for every opportunity to share my vision with other people.

I chose birds as my subject matter because for me they represent a lightness of spirit and the ability to literally transcend the mundane distractions of the every day. Birds can inhabit two worlds, two elements simultaneously. I think owls are particularly beautiful and mysterious birds. I love the way that their eyes suggest that they are keeping an important secret from the rest of us. I hope I have managed to capture some of that expression in this piece.

As I have progressed from interior designer to architectural designer to design lecturer to artist, being creative has always been the central motivation of my life. After years being a “realistic” grown up and focusing on making money from a series of professional design jobs, I nally decided to be more “idealistic”, embrace my childhood dream and dedicate myself to the pursuit of life. I am interested in various art media and inspired by everyday life. When my little girl was standing under winter sun on dry grassy ground and looking up at the green tree tops around her, I really wanted to capture the moment. This piece of work was inspired by that moment - a moment of wonder and hope.

I lead a fairly practical life in the engineering industry, my creative instincts express themselves through model making, photography, drawing and currently sculpture/construction using stainless cutlery. I nd it interesting that the form and beauty of nature also exist in the ordinary and the everyday. The Bellbird - the young bellbird puts his heart and soul into his song. One of a series of birds constructed from stainless cutlery, each component piece retaining much of its original identity.

I studied Art & Design in the UK and have a background of textiles. I am self taught in my glass work and I use my background of Textiles and the amazing place that we live in. Reecting the sands and volcanoes of the rugged west coast beaches, the glass pieces capture the ever changing colours of the sea, sky and bush in owing organic shapes which embody the spirit of the Waitakeres and Aotearoa. As in nature each piece is unique.

I have always loved the many different facets of creativity. Now that my children are all at school I am looking forward to developing my passion for painting further, with a new season ahead. The work: I began to paint a series called ‘Signicant people in my life’ this painting is part of that series. Michelle Bacon was a very dear friend of mine, who passed away last year after her battle with cancer. She inspires me to paint, to grasp hold of life and to celebrate the goodness in every one of us.

I don’t have any formal training, or formal art education all what I have learnt has been a result of a deep interest in art & creativity, also years working with materials as a worker. I have been in 2 exhibitions, Micro Macro (Upstairs Gallery), The Ark (Devonport Artspace). I’m also part of the Pace program which helps new artists to reach the professional level.

Guess I am what you’d call self taught. I have a background in graphic design and have always done art of some kind - clay, screen printing, drawing, etc. If there’s any kind of theme in the things I’ve chosen to paint so far I guess it would be that I like to notice the beauty in everyday things - and have an eye for the ‘quirky’. I am evolving both in style and understanding of what art means to me.... The painting is of my son Lewis and daughter Morgan. It was inspired by a photo that I took in the winter in Whatipu - on one of those days where the light seems almost too bright.

My life has been very interesting and my emotive artwork portrays my internal journey. I express myself through painting my experiences and allow the passions of my feelings to be expressed in raw, vibrant colours. ‘Charge’ is about charging into life with vibrance and passion regardless of what the rest of the world thinks. I like to work with acrylics because they are fast drying which allows me to work quickly to express my emotions.

“I am not interested in portraying something as you see it. It is more intriguing to nd something quirky or grotesque in every situation...to justify that second glance. In this instance I am taking a synical look at the Biblical portrayal of Absolom.”

I am currently completing a Master of Visual Arts at AUT; this work is part of my Masters project entitled ‘The Trouble With Being A Proud Pakeha’. After years of working in lm and fashion, I have nally found my true passion as an artist. My condence was boosted last year when a work of mine was included in the travelling show of the Wallace Trust Awards.

My rst encounter and now life-long passion in wood art began 30 years ago after a day visit to a renowned Polish wood carver living in a forest hut, lled with his amazing creations. Since then I’ve used this type of art to express my visions and now more recently my take on the current struggles of our world and our life on it.

Cardumen - (Spanish) meaning shoal. The long Pacic Coast in my home country Chile, is rich in marine life which inspired me to create this piece. I enjoy a wide range of arts and crafts using traditional techniques with modern materials. Most of my creations come from memorable places I have been; I also love using bright colors in my work to express my feelings.
