She has led UH in rebounding in 18-of-21 games this season and in conference she has been consistant also averaging 15.3 and 9.7 boards an outing. Pacific has four players averaging in double figures—leading the way is Kendall Rodriguez who is scor-ing 12.6 points per game and has tallied 50 3-pointers with 56 assists, and 33 steals. Kendall Kenyon is averaging 11.7 points and a team-high 10.8 rebounds with 258 boards overall. Play4Kay InitiativeThe 2013 Play 4Kay initiative (formerly known as WBCA Pink Zone) is an opportunity for a nation of coaches to raise breast cancer awareness and funds for research on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. Since its inception in 2007, the Play 4Kay initiative has raised over $2 million to support women’s cancer research. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund is the official charity of the initiative. It is named after Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women’s basketball coach, who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and passed away on January 24, 2009, after facing her third bout with the disease. With the creation of the Fund, Kay hoped to raise money to further cutting-edge research conducted by the nation’s top doctors and medical experts to allow more and more cancer patients to have access to experimental drugs and clinical trials. Since the majority of these research projects are privately funded, these researchers desperately need our support in order for them to continue to make strides in finding a cure for cancer. Last time out...The Rainbow Wahine basketball team defeated UC Davis, 59-48 on Thursday night in the Stan Sheriff Center. Senior point guard Monica DeAngelis led UH with a game-high 20 point while junior forward Kamilah Martin notched her ninth double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. DeAngelis was 7-of-13 from the floor and tied her season-high with four 3-pointers made. She also had two rebounds and two steals in 38 minutes of action. Martin was 3-of-6 in field goals and 4-of-5 from the free throw line for her 10 points—all scored in the first half. It marked her 38th career double-double and the 64th time in her career that she led UH in rebounds. Senior center Stephanie Ricketts provided solid minutes in the post for the ‘Bows, scoring a career-high seven points on 3-of-3 shooting in the paint with 1-of-2 free throws made. She also added two rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench. Sydney Haydel led UH, tying her career-high with three steals and Shawna-Lei Kuehu tied her season-high dishing out three assists with four rebounds and two steals off the bench. Vicky Tagalicod and Ash-leigh Karaitiana both added eight points apiece with Karaitiana also securing nine rebounds. Early in the first half, with the ‘Bows leading 7-6, UH went on a 10-0 run with a trey by DeAngelis, a jumper by Kuehu and three free throws and a layup by Martin to take a 17-6 lead with 13:12 left. Later after trading bas-kets, the Rainbow Wahine closed the half strong, scoring the last 10-straight points to take a 34-14 lead into the half. DeAngelis led UH with 11 points—including three treys while Martin tallied 10 points and nine rebounds. The ‘Bows struggled at the start of the second half to find their offensive groove again, UH missed their first eight shots of the half and didn’t not score a basket until the 15:37 mark. But UH did just enough offensively to

keep UCD at bay, never allowing their lead to dip below double-digits. The Aggies actually outscored UH in the second half, 34-25 but could not make up the stagger of their 20-point half time deficit. UC Davis edged out the ‘Bows in points in the paint, 22-to-20, but UH led the Aggies in points off of turnovers (17-to-13), second chance points (13-to-4) and bench scoring (19-to-4). UH’s defense held UCD to just 21.7% shooting in the first half and did not allow a 3-pointer in four attempts. For the game, the Aggies made just one-of-eight from beyond the arch—they were averaging seven made per game and lead the confer-ence in 3-pointers made and attempted. Hawai`i also out-rebounded UC Davis, 39-to-26. The Aggies were led by Sydnee Fipps who scored 18 points on 6-of-10 field goal shooting and 6-of-10 from the charity stripe. She also had a game-high five steals.

Beeman Hits 400 Win MarkHead coach Laura Beeman won her 400th overall career game with the win at CSUN on Feb. 2. Beeman now has 402 wins after UH defeated LBSU last week Thursday and UC Davis this past Thursday and now has an overall combined career record of 402-121. Previously, she spent 15 seasons at the helm of the junior college program at Mt. San Antonio College. While at Mt. SAC, she led the Mounties to 10 conference champion-ships and four California Community College State Championships and compiled a 390-110 record. Her total career record as a head coach is 401-121.

Martin Passes the 1,000 Point Milestone; Continues to Lead BWC in Scoring in Conference Games Martin (formerly Jackson) scored 18 points at UC Davis to become just the 17th Rainbow Wahine to hit the 1,000 point milestone and the sixth to do it in just her third year. Currently, she is ranked No. 12 in UH history with 1,079 points. In rebounds, she is also ranked No.2 with 877 total rebounds. Martin’s other trademark--other than being UH’s best rebounder since All-American Judy Mosely--has been her ability to post double-doubles. She got her ninth of the season; 38th of her career and fourth as a member of the Big West in UH’s most recent game vs. UC Davis, when she tallied 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds in the loss. She has now tallied 58 career double-figure scoring games--including the 19 of UH’s 23 games this season. She has tallied 49 career double-figure rebound games and she has been UH’s high scorer in 39 games and high rebounder in 65 games—including 18-of-23 games this season. Kuehu Making Impact Upon ReturnKuehu, a junior wing, made her return to the court after missing six games due to an inury suffered in the season opener at San Francisco. In conference play Kuehu has come off the bench and sparked the ‘Bows averaging 9.0 points per game with a team-high nine blocks and she is tied for third with 13 steals. Most recently at Long Beach State, Kuehu recorded her first double-double of her career, tying her season-high with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Last year, after missing UH’s open-ing exhibition game and the first two games of the season, she averaged 5.1 points and 5.0 rebounds with 11 assists and a team-high 11 steals before having her season end again prematurely. But she is looking forward to a fresh start with the new coaches and new system as a junior.

HEAD COACH

LAURA BEEMANCSU San Bernardino (1992)First SeasonOverall: 12-11 (First season) (JC): 390-110 (16)

Laura Beeman was selected as the new head women’s basketball coach at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa on March 23, 2012. She was formally introduced at a press conference at Les Murakami Stadium. Beeman boasts nearly 20 years of coaching experience on the both the collegiate and profes-sional level. The San Bernardino, Calif., native established herself as one of the best junior col-lege coaches in the nation before enjoying simi-lar success as an assistant coach at USC and with the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks. Beeman, 43, is the eighth head coach since the program’s inception in 1974 and the third female head coach in its history. Beeman spent the last two seasons at USC as associate head coach under Michael Cooper where they re-established the Women of Troy as a PAC-12 power. There she helped quickly revitalize the program with 42 combined wins in the last two years. In her first season, the team finished 24-13 and advanced to the WNIT Championship game. The team ultimately fin-ished with the program’s best record in 17 years. The Women of Troy garnered an 18-win sea-son his past year, including a six-game win streak to finish the regular season. In just two years, Beeman coached nearly a half dozen all-con-ference players, while also helping put together back-to-back nationally ranked recruiting classes.

Beeman and Cooper had previously worked together for the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks in 2008. As an assistant under Cooper that sea-son, she helped lead the Sparks to the Western Conference Finals after a one-year absence from the post-season. While with the Sparks, Beeman coached the No. 1 pick Candace Parker along with veteran All-Stars Lisa Leslie and DeLisha Milton-Jones. Prior to her stint with the Trojans, Beeman made her mark at the junior college level where she enjoyed a phenomenally success-ful 15-year run as the head coach at Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC). There she led the Mounties to 10 conference championships and four California Community College State Championships—including a string of three straight from 2006-08. Beeman was selected conference Coach of the Year four times and was voted the district and regional coach of the year in 2001. She led Mt. SAC to a school-best 37-1 record in both the 2007 and 2008 season. During her tenure with the Mounties, she pro-duced 80 all-conference selections, 24 all-state selections, and 10 all-region selections. Beeman posted a 390-110 (.780) record during her ten-ure at Mt. SAC. As a player, Beeman was an All-American guard at Cal State San Bernardino where she set the career, season and game assist records. She graduated in 1992 with a degree in business administration from CS San Bernardino and later earned a master’s degree in education with an emphasis on counseling from the University of Redlands. She earned a second master’s degree in education with an emphasis in physical educa-tion from Azuza Pacific University.
