LADYGOVSHOSTNATIONALLY-RANKEDVANDERBILTINWEDNESDAYTILTJust over 48 hours after returning home from its California trip, Austin Peay will host nationally-ranked Vanderbilt in a 7 p.m., Wednesday contest at the Dunn Center. It will be the Lady Govs second home contest this season, after opening the season at home. The Commodores will be making their first foray outside Memorial Gymnasium where they played their season’s first six games.

TRENDING:TURNOVERSAustin Peay enters the upcoming two-game homestand averaging 16 turnovers per game, a number that might seem unremarkable. However, that mark ranks 79th among the 336 Divi-sion I women’s basketball programs after three regular-season weekends. In addition, it is a dramatic improvement over the start of last season’s campaign that saw the Lady Govs average 24 turnovers per game in their first five outings. Austin Peay continued to lower that number during its recent California trip, committing just 15 turnovers against American, Friday, before surrendering a season-low 10 turnovers against Cal Poly, Saturday.

LADYGOVSLASTTIMEOUTCalPolydef.AustinPeay,79-69•Nov.26,2011Austin Peay mounted a second-half comeback that came too early in a 79-69 non-conference loss to Cal Poly, Saturday, in the Cal Poly Thanksgiving Classic at Mott Gymnasium. Austin Peay trailed by 13 points in the second half, 49-36, after Cal Poly’s Caroline Reeves made a layup at the 16:49 mark. From there the Lady Govs used a 22-8 run over the next 8:44 to take its first lead - 58-57 with 7:39 remaining - of the contest. While Cal Poly bent, it did not break and responded with its own 13-2 run over the ensuing 2:27, capped by a pair of Ashlee Burns three-pointers that pushed the lead to 10 points, 70-60, with 3:28 left. The Mustangs lead would not fall below six points the game’s remainder. Senior guard Whitney Hanley finished the game with 25 points - her third 20-point outing this season - making 11-of-24 (45.8 percent) of her field goals. Senior forward Jasmine Rayner scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

ABOUTVANDERBILTVanderbilt brings an unblemished 6-0 regular-season mark into Wednesday’s contest. After romping through an early slate of mid-major programs – with an average margin of victory of 37.2 points in their first five games – the Commodores downed No. 13/14 Oklahoma in a nearly wire-to-wire 78-66 victory, Saturday. Jasmine Lister led the effort with 25 points and six assists and was named the Southeastern Conference’s Player of the Week, Monday. The win also cata-pulted the Commodores into both national polls for the first time this season. Vanderbilt returns three starters and seven letterwinners from last season’s team that posted a 20-12 record and finished third in the SEC before falling in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

LADYGOVS-COMMODORESLASTMEETINGVanderbiltdef.AustinPeay,95-51•Nov.27,2009•Nashville,Tenn.Trailing by just six at halftime, Austin Peay surrendered the second half’s first 21 points as No. 16 Vanderbilt posted a 95-51 victory in the opening round of the 2009 Vanderbilt Thanksgiv-ing Classic at Memorial Gymnasium. Austin Peay played well in the opening half and enjoyed a seven-point lead, 19-12, with 11:46 remaining. The Lady Govs were helped by junior Ashley Herring’s hot start as she made her first four three-pointers as part of APSU’s first 19 points. The Commodores responded with a 11-4 run to tie the game, 23-23, with 6:30 remaining and continued the run with an 8-2 spurt to take a six-point, 31-25, advantage four minutes later. Both teams would trade baskets the half’s remainder before settling at a 35-29 Commodores lead at the break. Vanderbilt came out of the halftime break on a mission and scored the period’s first 21 points in just 4:32 to build a 56-29 lead and did not look back. Herring led all scorers with 21 points, making 6-of-13 (46.2 percent) from the field. The rest of the Lady Govs were 12-of-42 (28.5 percent) from the field.

NEXTGAME:LADYGOVSSEEKTOCOOLBLAZERSAustin Peay will continue its two-game homestand when it hosts UAB in a 7 p.m., Saturday con-test. UAB (3-2) boasts one of the nation’s stingiest defenses, holding opponents to 50 points per game and ranking 17th nationally in scoring defense while also ranking 12th nationally with a +9.2 turnover margin. The Blazers will test an Austin Peay offense that has been better at managing the ball this season, averaging just 16 turnovers per game and ranking 79th nation-ally in the category.

HANLEYWINSOPENINGOVC“PLAYEROFTHEWEEK”HONORSenior guard Whitney Hanley was named the adidas Ohio Valley Conference “Player of the Week” the league office announced, Nov. 15. Hanley opened the season with a career-high 28 points against Southern Illinois, Friday, and followed that with 21 points at Lipscomb, Nov. 14. However, it was her effort in the closing minutes of both contests that helped Austin Peay secure its first 2-0 start since the 1997-98 campaign. After Southern Illinois tied the contest with 2:27 remaining, Hanley scored seven of the Lady Govs final nine points to pull off the victory. Two days later, she helped the Lady Govs mount a come-from-behind effort, scoring the game-tying basket while being fouled with 56 seconds remaining and making the ensuing the free throw to give APSU its first lead since the opening basket. She would later make two free throws to secure the win.

FIVEFORDIMESFive Lady Govs finished in double figures (Whitney Hanley 28, Jasmine Rayner 13, Nicole Olszewski 12, Meghan Bussabarger 11 and Leslie Martinez 10) against Southern Illinois, Nov. 12, marking the first time that has happened since Feb. 11, 2011 against Tennessee State. Their collective effort sparked the Lady Govs to a 76-point night. For perspective, that effort would have been the second-best scoring effort all of 2010-11, falling just behind the 78-point outburst against Eastern Illinois in the OVC Semifinals.

NON-CONFERENCEHOMESTREAKBUSTEDAustin Peay ended a nine-game non-conference losing streak at Dunn Center with its 76-70 vic-tory against Southern Illinois, Nov. 11. Prior to that win, the Lady Govs last home non-conference win was Dec. 13, 2008 against SIU Edwardsville.

DUNNCENTERASAFEHAVENThe Lady Govs have slowly made the Dunn Center a safe haven during the Daniels era, with back-to-back winning records at home, including a 7-5 mark last season. The Lady Govs are 36-31 (.537) at home during the Daniels era after winning its home opener this season.

ROADUNKINDDURINGDANIELSERAAustin Peay has not enjoyed the road during the Daniels era, registering 10 or more losses in each of her five seasons. The Lady Govs are 21-57 (.269) in true road games during the Daniels era, posting a 1-1 mark so far this season.

HANLEYRECEIVESPRESEASONNODSenior guard Whitney Hanley was the lone Lady Govs player selected to the Ohio Valley Confer-ence’s preseason squad. Hanley, a second-team All-OVC selection last season, was one of 11 players named to the Preseason All-OVC team. She returns after leading Austin Peay in scoring (12.2 ppg), three-point field-goals made (62) and assists (2.8 apg).

WEALTHOFEXPERIENCERETURNSAustin Peay returns just seven letterwinners from last season’s 13-woman squad. However, that septet played a significant portion of the team’s minutes. Led by Hanley’s team-high 983 minutes played in 2010-11, the five returnees accounted for nearly 58 percent (3,825 of 6,600 minutes) of all minutes played last season. In addition, five of the seven started at least one game.

SCORINGPUNCHALSORETURNSAmong the Lady Govs seven returning letterwinners are its four leading scorers from last season’s team. Hanley (12.2 ppg), senior forward Jasmine Rayner (10.5 ppg), sophomore guard Nicole Olszewski (8.0 ppg) and junior forward Meghan Bussabarger (8.0 ppg) combined to average 38.0 of the team’s 61.8 points per game last season.

FRESHMANIMPACT?Austin Peay added five newcomers to replace the six letterwinners lost from last season’s team. Among those fresh faces are four freshmen who each join the Lady Govs after respective heralded prep careers. Freshman Kristen Stainback was tapped for a start in the Lady Govs season opener against Southern Illinois, Nov. 11, becoming the third freshman to start in the season-opening game. She joins Ashley Herring (2007) and Emily Pollock (2008) to do so during the Daniels Era.

LADYGOVSPICKEDFOURTHINOVCPRESEASONPOLLAustin Peay, which returns four starters among seven returning letterwinners, was picked fourth in the preseason OVC poll of head coaches and sports information directors, collecting 142 points. The Lady Govs were picked behind reigning regular-season champion Tennessee Tech, picked to win the conference race in receiving 193 points and 13 of 22 first-place votes. Defending tournament-champion UT Martin was picked to finish second with the nine remaining first-place votes and 187 points. Eastern Illinois was picked to finish third with 159 points.

Five teams participated in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship – Louisville, Vanderbilt, Middle Tennessee, Bowling Green and UT Martin – two teams played in the Women’s Postseason NIT – Cal Poly and Tennessee Tech – and two teams were selected to play in the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI) – Eastern Illinois and tourna-ment champion UAB.

FAMILIARFACERETURNSTOLADYGOVSBENCHBrooke Armistead, the Lady Govs’ all-time scoring leader who later had her jersey number re-tired, was hired as an assistant women’s basketball coach in June. Armistead, who played for the Lady Govs from 2000-04, was a graduate assistant under then-head coach Andy Blackston during the 2004-05 season and was on the bench when APSU captured its fourth consecutive OVC Tournament championship.

LADYGOVSCOACHINGSTAFFHASRING-INGENDORSEMENTThe Lady Govs coaching staff has plenty of OVC Championship experience from their playing days in the league. Head coach Carrie Daniels was a member of APSU’s 1996 OVC Champion-ship team. Assistant coach Jessica Grayson was a member of Austin Peay’s 2003 and 2004 championship squads. Brooke Armistead, the Lady Govs newest assistant coach, brings four rings – three as a player (01-03) and one as a coach (04) – to the bench.

LADYGOVSGOPINKINFEBRUARYAustin Peay will once again partner with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association to heighten breast cancer awareness and raise money for research towards finding a cure for the disease. The Lady Govs will host their “Play 4Kay” event, formerly the WBCA Pink Zone, Feb. 18 against Morehead State. The event honors North Carolina State head coach Kay Yow. Coach Yow’s third recurrence of breast cancer in 2006 was the catalyst to the WBCA Pink Zone. Before her pass-ing on January 24, 2009, Coach Yow, along with her players, the WBCA and The V Foundation, achieved the feat of uniting thousands in the fight against women’s cancers and since then the movement continues to grow and change lives each and every year during the month of February.

OVCTURNSTO16-GAME,UNBALANCEDSLATEIN2011-12With the inclusion of SIU Edwardsville in the regular-season race - it will not be eligible for post-season competition this season - the league’s coaches and athletic directors elected to use an unbalanced schedule for the upcoming season. In women’s basketball, the unbalanced schedule means each of the league’s teams will play its two “rivals” twice this season - Murray State and Tennessee State in Austin Peay’s case. In addition, each team will play four of the remaining schools twice - Morehead State, Eastern Kentucky, UT Martin and Southeast Missouri against Austin Peay. Each school will face the remaining four teams - Jacksonville State, Eastern Illinois, SIU Edwardsville and Tennessee Tech in APSU’s case - just once.

OVCWOMEN’SACTIONMOVESTOSATURDAY-MONDAYFORMATIN2011-12In addition, OVC women’s basketball contests will be played predominantly on a Saturday-Monday format. Last used during the 2002-03 season, both the men and women’s teams will play Sat-urday with the women playing a solo contest the following Monday. Only the regular-season’s final week will see a Thursday-Saturday format scheduled by the league to accommodate the league tournament the following week.

OVCCHAMPIONSHIPBACKATNASHVILLE’SMUNICIPALAUDITORIUMThe OVC Women’s Basketball Championship returns to Nashville’s Municipal Auditorium for the second consecutive season. It is the 18th time in the last 19 seasons the OVC Championship has been held in Nashville and it will be the sixth time Municipal Auditorium has hosted the event. The Lady Govs have won two (1996 and 2004) of their seven OVC Tournament Championships at Municipal Auditorium and have a 9-3 record all time in OVC tournaments played there.

BELMONTTOJOINOVCFOR2012-13SEASONThe Ohio Valley Conference announced in May that Belmont has been admitted to the Confer-ence and will become the league’s 12th member. The move was approved by the OVC Board of Presidents. Belmont will officially become a member of the OVC on July 1, 2012 and its athletic teams will begin competing in the conference in the 2012-13 season.

Carrie Daniels, a member of Austin Peay’s first Ohio Valley Conference Championship basketball team and NCAA participant in 1996, enters her sixth season as head coach at her alma mater. She already has taken the Lady Govs to two NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament appearances in her brief career and is intent on building a program that will compete annually for the OVC’s regular-season and tournament titles.

When she led the Lady Govs to the 2009 NCAA Tournament, Daniels became the first former Austin Peay student-athlete to take an Austin Peay team to a NCAA Championship. One year later, she led the Lady Govs to the NCAA Tournament again, becoming the second head coach in program history to lead a team to multiple tournament appearances.

In addition, Daniels is one of 26 coaches in NCAA Division I history to have played and coached in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship. All told, she has made five appearances in the NCAA tournament – twice as a head coach at Austin Peay, twice while an assistant at Western Kentucky and once as a player at Austin Peay.

Daniels has led the Lady Govs to steadily improving results in Ohio Valley Conference play the past four seasons – from a 3-17 record in her second season (2007-08) to three consecutive cam-paigns where her team has won 10 or more contests (10 in 2008-09, 11 in 2009-10 and 12 in 2010-11). Austin Peay also has proven to be a tough knockout in the OVC Tournament during her tenure, posting an 8-2 record in four appearances.

The Lady Govs 2010-11 effort was a battle to find scoring after the loss of two of the team’s top three scorers from the previous season. Those losses forced Daniels to turn to two juniors – guard Whitney Hanley and forward Jasmine Rayner – to make up over 26 points in lost scoring. The team struggled again in the non-conference portion of its schedule and even early in the OVC slate. However, Hanley and Rayner settled into their roles in time for a February surge where the team posted a 6-1 record and secured fifth place in a close conference race. The Lady Govs car-ried that momentum into the OVC Tournament, winning its first two games with dominant first-half performances. However, the Lady Govs could not overcome the fatigue of playing its third game in as many days and fell to Tennessee Tech in the tournament’s semifinals.

Daniels, now in her 15th season as a coach at the Division I level, entered the coaching ranks after a brilliant collegiate career at Austin Peay, where she was a four-year starter (1991-96) while playing under her maiden name, Carrie Thompson. At the time of her graduation, she was only the second player in school history to compile 1,000 points, 400 rebounds, 300 assists and 300 steals during her career. Daniels is one of of the first 10 APSU women’s basketball players to score 1,000 points, finishing with 1,118 points. Ten years after her career ended, she remains ranked among the career top 25 in 15 statistical categories.

She earned the 1996 Joy Award given to the top senior athlete at Austin Peay, after helping lead the Lady Govs to their first NCAA Tournament appearance as a senior in 1996. Daniels averaged 10.3 points and 3.6 rebounds per game during the 1995-96 campaign. She scored a team-best 14 points in the Lady Govs NCAA Tournament first-round game at Clemson.

In 1995, she received the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics Wilma Rudolph Award, a national award presented to honor student athletes who have overcome great personal, academic, and/or emotional odds to achieve academic success while participating in intercollegiate athletics. She missed most of the 1994-95 season after receiving a medical redshirt for a heart ailment.

A stellar prep player at Scotts-burg (Ind.) High School, Daniels earned All-America recognition from Women’s Basketball News Service after averaging 17 points, 6.3 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game as a senior.

Daniels is married to Billy Dan-iels, a former Austin Peay men’s basketball player. They have a son, Dalton, age 8.
