Kickoff in Syracuse is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. The teams played one of college football's most compelling games a season ago, when Clemson overcame a double-digit fourth-quarter deficit for a 27- 23 win. Quarterback Chase Brice, who had entered the week as the team's third-string quarterback, etched his name in Clemson lore after entering the contest in relief of an injured Trevor Lawrence and guiding Clemson on its 13-play, 94-yard game-winning drive. “What a game. It’s one that I’ll probably never forget," Head Coach Dabo Swinney said following last year's contest. "I’m super proud of our team and staff. They faced a lot of challenges this week, obviously, but you saw our football team grow up today. You saw the heart of our football team today. We kept battling. Trevor got knocked out of the game, and we put Chase in there, who hasn’t played in critical situations before. I was impressed with the moxie of our team. Somewhere, Danny Ford is smiling because that was an old-school win.” That victory against Syracuse in 2018 represented the fifth win of Clemson's active 17-game winning streak, which is presently tied for the school record set previously across the 2014-15 campaigns. The current group will attempt to earn the record outright with an 18th straight victory, which would also put Clemson in sole possession of the second-longest streak in ACC history. At 17 games, Clemson's current streak more than doubles the next longest active winning streaks in the country, held by Appalachian State and Ohio State at eight each. While many observers focused on the departure of seven starters from Clemson's top-ranked scoring defense from 2018, Clemson's current unit is serving notice of its arrival early in the 2019 season. Clemson has forced six takeaways, second-most in the ACC and tied for eighth-most in the country. Clemson has finished positive in the turnover margin in five consecutive games and will attempt to extend that streak to six for the first time since the 1989-90 seasons.

CLEMSON SET FOR PRIME-TIME SHOWDOWN AT SYRACUSE

After opening the 2019 season with consecutive victories at Memorial Stadium, consensus No. 1 Clemson will make its 2019 road debut when it faces Syracuse on Saturday, Sept. 14. Kickoff in Syracuse is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.

NOTESin a sixth straight game, dating to last season, for the first time since the first six games of the 2013 season.

    - Clemson attempting to play a turnover-free game, which would snap Syracuse's streak of 16 consecutive games with a takeaway, the third-longest active streak in the country.

    - Clemson attempting to finish with a positive turnover margin in a sixth straight game, dating back to last season, for the first time since the final five games of the 1989 season and first game of the 1990 season.

    - Clemson attempting to intercept a pass in a seventh straight game for the first time since a nine-game interception streak across the first nine games of the 2016 season.

    - Running back Lyn-J Dixon attempting to score a rushing touchdown in three consecutive games for the first time in his career.

    - Running back Travis Etienne attempting to reach 200 rushing yards in a game for the third time in his career to break the school record for career 200-yard rushing games (two each by Ray Yauger, 1967-69; Terrence Flagler, 1982-86; Raymond Priester, 1994-97; Andre Ellington, 2009-12). Presently, Flagler is the only player in school history to post two 200-yard games in a single season, a feat Etienne can match with another 200-yard day in 2019.

    - Etienne (2,682) chasing No. 9 Woodrow Dantzler (2,761), No. 8 Terry Allen (2,778) and No. 7 Kenny Flowers (2,914) on Clemson's all-time rushing yardage leaderboard.

    - Etienne (40) needing one rushing touchdown to tie or two touchdowns to pass Travis Zachery (41 from 1999-2001) for the second-most career rushing touchdowns in school history.

    - Etienne (42) continuing to chase C.J. Spiller (51), Travis Zachery (50) and James Davis (49) on the school's all-time leaderboard for total touchdowns.

    - Etienne (252) needing 10 points to pass kicker Chris Gardocki (261 from 1988-90) for ninth on Clemson's all-time scoring list. Etienne already ranks fourth on the list among non-kickers.

    - Etienne attempting to average 10.0 yards per carry in a game on at least five attempts for the 11th time in his career to tie Colin Kaepernick for the most by any FBS player since 2000.

    - Etienne (3,261) entering the week 308 all-purpose yards shy of passing Artavis Scott (3,568) to enter the Top 10 in career all-purpose yards in school history.

    - Wide receiver Tee Higgins (15) needing one receiving touchdown to tie Terrance Roulhac (16 from 1983-86), Derrick Hamilton (16 from 2001-03) and Jacoby Ford (16 from 2006-09) for 10th in school history career touchdown receptions. Perry Tuttle ranks ninth with 17 from 1978-81.

    - Quarterback Trevor Lawrence attempting to add to his single-season career-high two rushing touchdowns. He would join Kelly Bryant (2017) as the only Clemson quarterbacks since 2000 to rush for a touchdown in each of the first three games of a season.

    - Lawrence (3,716) needing to throw for 284 yards to become only the 10th player in school history to throw for 4,000 career yards.

    - Lawrence (296) needing four completions to become the 11th player in school history to record 300 career pass completions. Last week, he passed his position coach Brandon Streeter, who completed 294 career passes at Clemson from 1996-99.

    - Lawrence (32) entering the game tied for seventh in school history in career passing touchdowns. He is three touchdowns shy of matching Nealon Greene (35 from 1994-97) for sixth in school history.

    - Lawrence (3,906) needing 94 combined rushing and

WHAT TO WATCH FOR THIS WEEK- Clemson attempting to win its 18th consecutive

game, dating to the start of the 2018 season. It would represent Clemson's all-time longest winning streak, surpassing a 17-game streak across the final three games of the 2014 season and the first 14 games in 2015.

    - Clemson attempting to win its eighth straight true road game and avenge its most recent road loss (2017 at Syracuse). It would be Clemson's fourth road winning streak of eight games or more all-time, joining eight-game streaks from 1947-48 and 1978-79 as well as the school-record 12-game streak from 2015-17.

    - Clemson seeking its 20th victory in its last 21 true road games.

    - Clemson seeking its 33rd victory in its last 36 games away from home.

    - Clemson attempting to win a 13th consecutive ACC regular season game for the third time in school history (20 from 1981-84, 14 from 2015-16). Clemson also won 13 straight Southern Conference games from 1938-41 prior to the formation of the ACC. It would be Clemson's 15th straight victory against ACC opponents, including postseason play.

    - Clemson seeking its 100th win since the start of the 2011 season, the year that began Clemson's active eight-year streak of consecutive 10-win seasons. Clemson is 99-15 since 2011.

    - Clemson attempting to improve to 11-2 all-time in games as the AP No. 1-ranked team. Eleven of Clemson's 12 games played at No. 1 all-time entering Saturday have come during the Dabo Swinney era.

    - Clemson attempting to win a 13th consecutive game by 14 points or more, which would tie for the fifth-longest streak in the AP Poll era (since 1936).

    - Clemson attempting to improve to 6-2 all-time against Syracuse.

    - Clemson attempting to improve to 3-1 all-time in games played at Syracuse.

    - Clemson attempting to win its 51st road opener in program history. The Tigers are currently 50-65-8 all-time in their first road game of the year.

    - Clemson attempting to earn its fifth consecutive victory in a road opener dating back to 2015. Last year's senior class became the first Clemson senior class since 1989 to win every road opener of its career. A five-game winning streak in road openers would pull Clemson within one of its school record of six, set across the 1984-89 seasons.

    - Clemson attempting to win its first ACC road game of the year for a fifth straight season. Clemson's last loss in its first ACC road game of the year came at the hands of top-ranked Florida State in 2014.

    - Clemson entering the game 40-25-1 all-time in its first conference road game of the season since the formation of the ACC in 1953.

    - Clemson attempting to push its winning streak in Saturday games to 32 to extend the longest Saturday winning streak in school history. Clemson's current 31-game run of consecutive Saturday victories is the longest active streak in the country.

    - Clemson attempting to win its 20th consecutive game in the month of September, dating back to 2014. The current streak is already the longest in school history.

    - Head Coach Dabo Swinney entering this week 35-17 in true road games and attempting to win his 36th true road game at Clemson, which would tie Danny Ford (36-15-1) for the second-most road wins in school history. Frank Howard holds the school record with 77 career road wins.

    - Clemson attempting to record multiple takeaways

Three items of note in 280 characters or less:

This week, Clemson will attempt to set a school record with an 18th straight victory, breaking the mark set across the 2014-15 seasons. It would be the second-longest winning streak by an ACC member in conference history, trailing a 29-game streak by Florida State from 2012-14.

Clemson was ranked No. 1 in the most recent AP Poll, marking the 62nd consecutive poll in which Clemson has appeared in the Top 10. Clemson's 62-game streak now moves into the Top 10 (and a tie for ninth) for the longest such streak in AP Poll history.

Clemson has played five turnover-free games since 2018, second-most in the ACC in that time frame. This week, a turnover-free game by Clemson would snap Syracuse's streak of 16 consecutive games with a takeaway, the third-longest streak in the country.

SERIES HISTORY VS. SYRACUSESaturday will represent just the eighth meeting

between Clemson and Syracuse all-time and only the seventh in regular season play.

The Orange won the first meeting at the 1996 Gator Bowl in Jacksonville following the 1995 season by a 41-0 score. Clemson was ranked 23rd entering the game and was coming off a five-game winning streak to close the season. Syracuse was unranked going into the game, but jumped to 17th in the final USA Today poll with the win quarterbacked by Donovan McNabb.

Clemson has won five of six meetings since Syracuse joined the ACC in 2013. The Tigers had won four in a row by at least double digits before Syracuse ended the streak with a 27-24 Friday night win over the Tigers at Syracuse.

Saturday's game will be the eighth consecutive game against Syracuse — every game in the series — in which Clemson has been ranked in the top 25.

Included below is an overview of all seven games contested between Clemson and Syracuse all-time, with home games listed in bold:

LAST MEETING VS. SYRACUSEClemson 27, Syracuse 23(Sept. 29, 2018, Clemson, S.C.)A Travis Etienne two-yard rushing touchdown with

less than a minute left in the game proved to be the difference-maker in the No. 3/2 Clemson Tigers’ 27-23 win over the Syracuse Orange at Memorial Stadium. With the win, Clemson remained undefeated at 5-0 on the year en route to a 15-0 national championship sea-son.

Offensively, the ground game powered Clemson and was led by Etienne, who rushed for a then-career-high 203 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries. Tee Higgins was the Tigers’ leading receiver, amassing 53 yards on four catches, including one for 20 yards on a fourth-and-six that kept the game-winning drive alive on a throw from quarterback Chase Brice, who entered in relief of an injured Trevor Lawrence after starting the week as the team's third-string quarterback.

Syracuse converted on two field goal attempts in the first quarter, with the first being from 35 yards to cap the game’s first drive, and the second a 51-yarder after the Orange recovered a Tiger fumble just over a minute later. But it was the Tigers who found the end zone first in the last minute of the first quarter on an Etienne one-yard rush, bringing the score to 7-6 at the end of the first 15 minutes.

Eric Dungey scored Syracuse’s first touchdown on a one-yard rush midway through the second quarter, and Andre Szmyt made his third field goal of the game, this one from 32 yards, with less than 30 seconds left in the half to bring the score to 16-7 in favor of the Orange at the break.

Greg Huegel then converted on two field goal at-tempts for Clemson, one from 43 yards and one from 37 yards, to cut the Syracuse lead to three points late in the third quarter.

The Orange regained a 10-point advantage early in the final quarter on another Dungey one-yard run, but Etienne broke free for a 26-yard scoring rush on the ensuing drive to bring the lead back to three points. It was Etienne again who scored the game-winning touch-down on a two-yard run with 41 seconds remaining in the matchup.

OTHER MEMORABLE WINS2013: Clemson, ranked third in the AP poll entering

the game, won at Syracuse by a 49-14 score behind the passing combination of Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins. Boyd threw for a then Clemson record 455 yards and five touchdown passes, while Watkins had four catches for 126 yards, including a 91-yard score from Boyd. Clemson finished the game with 624 yards of total offense and averaged 8.1 yards per play in Syracuse's first ACC game.

2014: Clemson defeated Syracuse, 16-6, at Memorial Stadium on Clemson’s homecoming in Syracuse’s first appearance in Memorial Stadium. Clemson’s No. 1-ranked defense held the Orange to just 10 first downs, 88 yards rushing and 82 yards passing for 170 total in just 62 plays, a 2.7-yard average.

touchdown against the same team in consecutive years since 1996-97. In 1996, Rahim Abdullah had a nine-yard fumble return for a score against NC State. The next year he had a 74-yard fumble return for a score against the Wolfpack.

-- NOTES FROM LAST WEEK --

POSTGAME NOTES VS. TEXAS A&M- One year after Clemson’s top-ranked scoring

defense allowed 501 yards at Texas A&M, Clemson held Texas A&M to 289 total yards on Saturday. It included holding quarterback Kellen Mond to 236 passing yards (97 through three quarters) after Mond accounted for 430 yards in the teams’ meeting in 2018.

    - Clemson held Texas A&M to 2.0 yards per carry on 27 carries, the lowest yards-per-carry average allowed by Clemson since holding Boston College to 0.3 yards per carry on Nov. 10, 2018. It’s the 18th time since 2014 that Clemson has held an opponent to 2.0 or fewer yards per carry, second-most in the country. Clemson is 17-1 in those contests.

    - Texas A&M scored its lone touchdown with six seconds remaining. Clemson was six seconds away from holding its opponent out of the end zone for the fourth time in its last 17 games, dating to the start of the 2018 season.

    - Clemson finished plus-one in the turnover margin and has been positive in the turnover margin in five straight games, dating back to last season, for the first time since the first five games of the 2013 season.

    - The 14-point win snapped Clemson’s streak of consecutive victories by 20 or more points at 11, one shy of 2018 Alabama for the longest such streak by any team in the AP Poll era (since 1936).

    - Quarterback Trevor Lawrence completed 24-of-35 passes for 268 yards with a touchdown. He also rushed four times for 11 yards with a rushing touchdown.

    - Running back Travis Etienne rushed 16 times for 53 yards. He also posted career highs with four receptions for 52 receiving yards.

    - Etienne recorded a career-long 27-yard reception in the second quarter, surpassing his previous long of 24 against NC State in 2018.

    - Running back Lyn-J Dixon led Clemson with 79 rushing yards on 11 carries. Dixon led Clemson in rushing yards for the first time since doing so in his collegiate debut against Furman in 2018.

    - Wide receiver Justyn Ross caught a career-high seven passes for a team-high 94 yards and a touchdown. His career high in receptions entering the day was six, set in both College Football Playoff games last season.

    - Ross recorded his first touchdown reception of the season on a 30-yard pass from Lawrence on third-and-11 in the second quarter. The touchdown reception was the 10th of Ross’ career.

    - The touchdown pass to Ross was Lawrence’s 32nd career touchdown pass, tying him with Kyle Parker (32 from 2009-10) for seventh in school history.

    - Lawrence rushed for a one-yard touchdown in the second quarter, giving him a rushing touchdown in back-to-back games for the first time in his career.

    - Running back Lyn-J Dixon recorded his second rushing touchdown of the season on a four-yard rush in the third quarter.

    - Dixon has now recorded a rushing touchdown in back-to-back games for the second time in his career. He previously accomplished the feat against Wake Forest and NC State in 2018.

    - Safety Nolan Turner recorded the first forced fumble of his career in the second quarter. It was recovered by linebacker James Skalski, his first career fumble recovery.

    - The takeaway by Skalski gave Clemson at least one takeaway in each of Clemson’s last six games, dating to last season.

    - Cornerback A.J. Terrell and defensive end Xavier Thomas split a second quarter sack. The half-sack was the first of Terrell’s career.

    - Safety K’Von Wallace recorded his first career sack, dropping Mond for a 10-yard loss in the third quarter.

    - Safety Tanner Muse recorded his second interception of the season and his second in as many weeks. It marks the first time in his career he’s recorded an interception in back-to-back games. His two interceptions this season tie his single-season career high, set in 2018.

    - Muse becomes the first Clemson player to record an interception in each of the first two games of a season since DeAndre McDaniel, now a defensive analyst for Clemson, in 2009.

    - Clemson’s first play from scrimmage was a pass reception by tight end J.C. Chalk. Chalk is the grandson of College Football Hall of Famer Gene Stallings, who coached at Texas A&M from 1965-71. Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney played and coached under Stallings at Alabama.

    - Wide receiver Amari Rodgers made his season

NOTESdebut in the first quarter, 166 days after suffering an ACL injury during spring practice on March 25.

    - Texas A&M scored the first points of the game on a 32-yard field goal in the second quarter. It was the culmination of a 16-play drive, the longest allowed by Clemson since a 16-play drive by Louisville on Nov. 3, 2018, a drive that also resulted in Clemson holding its opponent to a field goal.

    - The Tigers held Texas A&M to under 100 total yards in the first half (92), marking the first time in the last 20 games the Aggies have failed to gain at least 100 yards in the opening half. The last time the Aggies were held under 100 total yards was Oct. 28, 2017 against Mississippi State (33) in a 35-14 loss.

    - At 94 degrees, the temperature at kickoff was the third-hottest in Clemson history and the second hottest at Death Valley, trailing only a 95-degree game against Troy on Sept. 3, 2011. Two of the three hottest games in Clemson history have been against Texas A&M, including a 95-degree game at Kyle Field on Sept. 18, 2004. (Note: The temperature was 96 degrees at the start of the ABC broadcast prior to kickoff.)

    - The game was the sixth all-time meeting between Clemson and Texas A&M.

    - Captains for the contest were offensive lineman Gage Cervenka, safety Tanner Muse, linebacker Isaiah Simmons and guard John Simpson.

    WITH THE WIN

    - Clemson won its 17th consecutive game, dating to the start of the 2018 season, tying Clemson's all-time longest winning streak by matching a 17-game streak across the final three games of the 2014 season and the first 14 games in 2015.

    - Clemson won its 17th consecutive game at Memorial Stadium, dating back to a 56-7 win against South Carolina on Nov. 25, 2016. The 17-game streak is the second-longest home winning streak in Clemson history, trailing only a 21-game Memorial Stadium winning streak from 2013-16.

    - Clemson has now won 38 of its last 39 games at home.

    - The 2018-19 Tigers’ 17 consecutive wins are tied with the 2014-15 Tigers and the 1999-2000 Florida State Seminoles for the second-longest streak in ACC history. The longest winning streak in ACC history is 29, set by Florida State from 2012-14.

10-WIN SEASONS Clemson entered 2019 riding a streak of eight consecutive seasons with 10+ wins. The program's eighth consecutive 10-win season in 2018 tied the Tigers with the 1985-92 Miami Hurricanes and the 2004-11 Virginia Tech Hokies for the fourth-longest streak in FBS history and made Clemson one of only six programs to accomplish the feat. The record for consecutive 10-win seasons is 14, set by Florida State (1987-2000). Alabama is the only other program with an active streak of at least eight straight 10-win seasons. The Tigers have 15 10-win seasons in school history, with more than half coming in the last eight years under head coach Dabo Swinney. The 2018 season was Clemson's fifth with at least 12 wins, with Swinney sitting at the helm for four of them.

A CENTURY MARK FOR THE DECADE Head Coach Dabo Swinney can vividly recall the looks he received when he said Clemson was on the cusp of the winningest decade in program history following a 2010 campaign in which the Tigers finished 6-7. In 2017, that vision became a reality with two seasons to spare when Clemson collected its 88th win of the decade in the ACC Championship Game against Miami (Fla.) to surpass the Tigers of the 1980s (87) for most wins in any decade in school history. With a rivalry win against South Carolina to close the 2018 regular season, Clemson reached triple digits in wins in a decade for the first time in program history. Included below are the schools that have accomplished that feat.

In the 1980s, Clemson had a .767 winning percentage (87-25-4), the nation's fifth-best winning percentage. Clemson did not have a losing season in any year in the 1980s under Danny Ford, who coached every game in that decade. SENIORS CHASING HISTORY The 2018 Clemson seniors left their legacy not only in program history but also in the annals of the sport, recording 55 wins to tie for the most wins by any senior class in FBS history. Throughout the 2018 season, Head Coach Dabo Swinney reminded his players that anything Clemson had done once, they'd done again. The 2019 senior class will have the opportunity for that maxim to once again ring true. The 2019 Clemson seniors are 43-3 since 2016, tied with Alabama for the best mark in the country. The group can tie the 2018 seniors for the best four-

Clemson can become the first school to win five straight with a victory in the 2019 ACC Championship Game.

POWER OVER THE POWER FIVE Early in his head coaching tenure, Dabo Swinney laid out his belief to then-Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips that the Tigers needed to add tough non-conference challenges on top of their tests in ACC play to serve as a foundation for the program's growth. "I had a conversation with Terry Don and said, ‘Terry Don, I know we are not very good right now, but we need to play people because that is going to help me teach and help me develop the culture and the mindset that you have to have to win at the highest level,'" recounted Swinney. "I didn’t think we had that, and that’s what we committed to. That’s what we’ve done." That scheduling philosophy and culture change has resonated in the Clemson program, and since 2013, no team can claim more wins against Power Five Conference opponents than the Tigers.

ESTEEMED COMPANY Head Coach Dabo Swinney's run of excellence in his decade-plus at Clemson has placed him in the company of college football legends. Swinney enters this week with a winning percentage of .797, the 18th-best among any major college football head coaches in history with at least 10 seasons of head coaching experience and only .001 behind Bob Stoops for 17th. Among the legends he has passed are College Football Hall of Famers Bo Schembechler (.775), Bear Bryant (.780) and Henry Williams (.785), as well as Nick Saban (.790), whose Crimson Tide were defeated by Swinney and the Tigers in the most recent College Football Playoff National Championship. Swinney (118) is seven wins away from reaching 125 career victories as a head coach. Presently, only 96 coaches in major college football history have reached that mark. Other active coaches in striking distance of joining that club this season include Mike Gundy (123), Kyle Whittingham (122) and Bronco Mendendall (117). Swinney is three wins from matching the career total of Danny Ford, who won 121 combined games at Clemson (96) and Arkansas (25).

TOP WIN PERCENTAGE IN ACC HISTORY Head Coach Dabo Swinney entered the 2019 season already perched atop ACC history in overall winning percentage with a mark of .795 prior to the start of the season. He has since pushed that percentage to .797 with two wins in 2019.

NOTESEXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS Clemson has equaled or exceeded its postseason AP and USA Today rankings in comparison to its preseason rankings each of the last eight years. That included quite an accomplishment in both 2016 and 2018, as it finished No. 1 by winning the national championship to exceed the school's No. 2 preseason ranking both times. Clemson exceeded its preseason ranking each of the last eight years in the coaches poll, a streak that will come to an end in 2019 by simple virtue of Clemson opening the season atop the 2019 poll. With regard to Associated Press voting, Clemson has exceeded its preseason ranking in the AP poll in seven of the last eight years. The lone exception came in 2013, when Clemson was picked No. 8 in the AP preseason poll and finished No. 8.

Clemson's current 17-game winning streak marks the program's 10th all-time winning streak of at least 10 games and the second-longest streak in team history. With a win this week, Clemson can surpass its 17-game winning streak from 2014-15 for sole possession of the longest streak in school history.

The current streak marks the third time Dabo Swinney has had a winning streak of at least 10 games. Danny Ford had three separate streaks of at least 10 games, including a 13-game streak from 1980 through the last game of the 1981 season.

Frank Howard had a 15-game winning streak from 1947-49 and was part of a 13-game streak from 1939-40. The school's first 10-game winning streak took place under John Heisman from 1899 to 1901.

    20-POINT WINS & 14-POINT WINSObservers will often point to Clemson's 27-23 come-

from-behind victory against Syracuse in late September of 2018 as a turning point in the team's 15-0 national championship season. Following that win, in which redshirt freshman Chase Brice led the team to victory after starting the week as the squad's third-team quarterback, Clemson won 11 straight games by at least 20 points. Per ESPN Stats & Info, Clemson's 11-game streak of 20-point wins across the 2018-19 seasons was one game shy of the 2018 Alabama Crimson Tide for the longest streak of 20-point wins in the AP Poll era (since 1936).

The approach to creating functional depth and rewarding players ready to play has been a key philosophy for Head Coach Dabo Swinney, whose own collegiate playing career was hatched as a walk-on fighting for playing time in Alabama's receiving corps.

“We’re fully committed to playing guys who deserve to play,” Swinney said. “You commit to a guy early in the season, and even if a guy’s only played 10 percent of the snaps, when you get to game eight or nine, they’ve got some good experience.”

However, despite the roster featuring the largest freshman class in Dabo Swinney's tenure at Clemson, the Tigers' youth is not devoid of experience. Last season, the first year of new redshirt regulations allowed Clemson to play a then-school-record 20 true freshmen in 2018. Clemson immediately shattered that record in its 2019 season opener, with 27 true freshmen making their collegiate debuts in that contest.

BEHIND THE NUMBERSClemson's success in 2018 helped rewrite portions

of its school and conference record books, and included in the cumulative figures were a number of telling statistics. According to figures tracked by SportSource Analytics:

    - Clemson owned the "middle eight" in 2018, the section of the game defined as the final four minutes of the first half and the first four minutes of the second

half. Clemson outscored opponents 132-10 in the middle eight in 2018, an average margin of +8.1 points per game. That per-game differential was the largest by any program in the country since 2013.

    - Clemson averaged 10.0 yards per play on more than a quarter of drives in 2018 (25.15 percent), nearly doubling the national average of 12.9 percent and far exceeding the 7.73 percent allowed by the Clemson defense in 2018.

    - Clemson gained 56.6 percent of all of its available yards in 2018 and allowed opponents to gain only 27.9 percent of their available yards. The national average for the season was 44.0 percent.

EXPLOSIVE PLAYS"The explosive play is alive and well in our offense."That was Head Coach Dabo Swinney's exact quote

three games into the 2018 season. Supporting evidence for his claim was found easily in both national rankings and historical context as the season progressed.

Including special teams, Clemson recorded a school-record 19 touchdowns of 50 yards of more in 2018.

Players responsible for 17 of the 19 touchdowns of 50 yards or more returned for Clemson in 2019. Justyn Ross led Clemson with six such touchdowns, followed by four from Travis Etienne, three each from Lyn-J Dixon and Amari Rodgers, and one each by now-departed running backs Adam Choice and Tavien Feaster.

Clemson opened the 2019 season with another explosive performance in a 52-14 win against Georgia Tech. The Tigers racked up 632 yards of offense on only 79, averaging 8.0 yards per play even despite a methodical 11-play, 42-yard clock-killing drive to conclude the game. Clemson amassed 411 of those yards on 49 carries, a rushing average of 8.4 yards. It was Clemson's fourth game with a yards per carry average of eight yards or better since the start of the 2018 season, tied for the most in the FBS.

DOMINANT DEFENSESince the advent of the College Football Playoff

in 2014, Clemson has routinely produced one of the nation's elite defenses.

Clemson has ranked in the Top 10 in the country in total defense in each of the last five seasons and has ranked among the Top 10 in scoring defense in three of those campaigns.

POINTS OFF TURNOVERSSince the start of the 2018 postseason, Clemson's

offense and defense have both been dominant in possessions starting following turnovers. Since the 2018 ACC Championship Game, the Tigers hold a 69-7 advantage against opponents in points off turnovers, with the only points coming in the final seconds of an eventual 14-point win against Texas A&M.

    RETURNING FIREPOWERClemson's eye-popping, record-setting offensive

campaign in 2018 was authored at the skill positions in large part by underclassmen. The group was led in passing by true freshman Trevor Lawrence (3,280 yards), in rushing by sophomore Travis Etienne (1,658) and in receiving by sophomore Tee Higgins (59 receptions, 12 touchdowns) and freshman Justyn Ross (1,000 receiving yards).

Clemson was one of only three FBS programs to produce a 3,000-yard passer, 1,500-yard rusher and 1,000-yard receiver in 2018 and one of only 20 teams (including only nine Power Five teams) to accomplish the feat this decade. If Clemson repeats the feat, it would become the first program this decade to produce a player in all three categories in back-to-back seasons.
