A YEAR OF RECORDS

The year 2014 clearly showed the dynamics of the wildlife industry, with anincredible increase of 82% in the turnover of game auctions, from R1,029billion in 2013 to R1,875 billion in 2014. However, that only represents 30%of the total game trade.

Dr Flippie Cloete’s article on live game trade in this edition, highlightseven more records that were achieved:• Highest number of official game auctions (83)• Highest number of animals (28 733) offered on auction• The prices of the majority of species at a historical high, especially dur-

ing the last couple of months• 36 Species fetched new record prices.

It is significant that the higher prices were achieved in spite of highersupplies. The demand is therefore still higher than the supply. Good genet-ics was an incentive for buyers to pay a premium.

What can we expect in 2015? The first big auction is being held as soon as early February, with another

eight auctions by Vleissentraal in March alone. At this stage, they havealready scheduled 76 auctions for the year.

GAME & HUNT already has a record number of advertisements forgame marketing in January, February and March 2015, even more proofthat the wildlife industry is sizzling hot!

The controversy around price movements towards the end of the 2014marketing season evoked a lot of positive reactions, with the majority ofcomments indicating that there was still room for growth, but not forspeculative approaches.

It would appear as if the growth expectations for 2015 are still positive.

WILD & JAG Februarie 2015 7

Twee bekende en gewilde tydskrifte in die

jag- en wildbedryf, WILD & JAG en

Africa’s Bowhunter, word nou uit dieselfde

stal bedryf. ’n Samewerkingsooreenkoms wat

onlangs tussen die twee partye bereik is,

maak beide hierdie titels nou deel van Jan

Louis Ondernemings.

Africa’s Bowhunter bedien boogjagters,

boogskietliefhebbers en wildboere ook reeds

15 jaar lank. Jan van der Walt, besturende direkteur van Jan Louis Ondernemings,

meen hierdie stap hou groot voordele in.
