Process of creating a gameEvery game has a story. All games are made in different ways, but I’m going to talk about how a complicated sort of violent video game is made. Game companies makes their labels and everything, and then they meet with famous designers to discuss the ideas of gaming, artists and writers that designs storyboards. The storyboards needs to have rough sketches and instructions for each scene of a game. Creating a video game is like creating a film, it is a very long technological complicating process. Each level must be sketched out first. After drawing storyboards, while the writers write dialogues and level scenes, artists create 3D characters both in paper and computer. First paper, because they need a perfect ‘picture’ of what their character should look like. Then, computer, hours of re-editing and textures and colors and trying to make it seem realistic. After that, they try making the characters ‘move’ and have motions. Then, they create the scenery and the background of the characters world. They then create codings a.k.a the computer language that control every part of the game; interactions, movement, background noises, recording sounds, etc. After that, they do a little testing. Reviewing, Marketing, and distribution. Finally, meeting with public relations for promotion and marketing like advertising on tv screens, computers, blogs, etc, to the world.

Investigation

Time allowed: 5 weeks

Client: Younger Viewers: Elementary school, middle school.

Areas of Interaction: The AOI would probably be Approaches to learning, because it’s the impact and the way they think that they have with the world. Their attitude to learning new things, problem solving in challenging games, developing new skills, etc.

Specification and Limitations: The game must be fun, entertaining, exciting, tremendous, extreme and enjoyable.

Unit Question: Can Games Educate?

Page 4: GAME IT PROJECT

Client InterviewWhat category should the game fit in for fourth graders?

Should the game be challenging and exciting or simple and fun?

Should the game have more than one characters?

I think that the best category for it would be educational since its for a school, and the games should be filled with puzzles, mazes, wordings and school things like that. It should be

enjoyable, and try not to make it boring. Because sometimes, 4th graders can think an educational game is sort of boring.

The game should be a mix of each, it should be easy to do but also a little bit challenging and it should be fun and exciting like all the fun games like in coolmath.com It’s all educational and

challenging, but entertaining. So create a game similar like that.

It really depends on the game, if it fits with more than one characters, then yes. If there’s only one character and one obstacle needed, that would also be wonderful.

Client Interview SummaryIn this interview, I found out a variety of lists that my client and students in the fourth grade possible would be interested in. My client likes games that are related to education and school, so I have to keep in mind that “educational” gaming is the topic. In their opinions I found out, since it’s for a school, they would love if the games were filled with puzzles, wordings, mazes, etc. They also told me to create a game that is as enjoyable and entertaining yet educational as coolmath.com. Another thing I observed was that educational games can be boring for some, and that I should try to mix and join in the kinds of games students in this century would like, and after I found about the kinds of games they like for example: Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3. I have to make something similar to those games, but make it more appropriate and educational.

Investigation SummaryFrom my investigation staged, I did a lot of researching on how games should be made, how games are operated, and I did a summary on it based on the process of the game. By creating the summary, it made me realize and learn more of the process of creating a game. Before, this I’ve never actually learned or know how to create a game briefly, so investigating and reserching and watching tutorials online, really helped me. I also investigated the age group, who my client is, my specification, my areas of interaction and my time preparation. My main goal for my game is to be educational and entertaining.

Design 1I think that this game is pretty entertaining, it’s a pretty simple and basic game , and can be played by anyone if they have an interest in it. I am pretty sure that the grade fours would love a game like this with all the chasing like the reality physical game “Tag”, but I am aware with the fact that it’s not entirely educational.

Page 9: GAME IT PROJECT

Design 2Personally, this game in my opinion is pretty simple and basic. I mean who doesn’t know a good game of tic tac toe? This game is taken from the idea of Pacman and world wide maze games. So I’m cautious with the fact that I’m not being entirely creative on this design. I added a little bit of a twist to it, and I think maybe if I added something more like one more obstacle for example a bouncing or tennis ball, it would be funner.

Page 10: GAME IT PROJECT

Design 3In my opinion, I think that this game is more challenging than the two other designs. Mainly, because it’s confusing. The reason I made it confusing is because sometimes I’m really sick of basic simple games, and I think that it will make audiences think about how to solve the ball reaching the other end or get out of the hole without touching anything while the equipment goes around.

Pros and ConsDesigns Pros Cons

Design 1I think that the game really works out,

because it’s fun, challenging and entertaining, and I think it’s something

fourth graders would enjoy.

I wouldn’t really call it an educational game. It definitely has obstacles, but I

would fix it with a tad bit more of a challenge part.

Design 2The Game is pretty well known, and I

added a bit more twist to it. I think that the game is educational and fun, and its

pretty straight forward.

I think that this game may be a bit cliche, and a little bit more for second

graders. It’s a basic game of tic tac toe, maybe a bit too simple.

Design 3It looks fun and educational, because it makes the brain cells working of where to go and what to do and everything, even if it looks challenging, it works.

This game could be a little too challenging to do, I think that if I had to

make that game I need to make an instructions slide, because it’s not pretty

straight forward.

Chosen DesignAfter long hard decision making, I came up with an end that the final design I would create will be design two, because even if it may seem a little too simple, I could improve it a little better. I also need a puzzled, challenging, mazed game. Because, my category is on Educational games, I could improve it by adding other obstacles to it, so it’s more entertaining. The other two games I’m a bit not sure about is Design one, because the first one is not really educational but it’s still entertaining, and design three is a bit of a confusing one.

Visualize experimenting

~In This picture I was learning and reading over the cards that Mr Brian gave us, and I followed the card instructions by experimenting with the codings and the instructions and the

movements and motions of the game.

-~As you can see I was adding a bit of a background for the game, and I was observing some characters and obstacles I could use to create it. It was pretty hard because some of the characters were too basic and too fancy and some others were not really nice, and

some were. So it was sort of a challenging process of it.Tuesday, December 13, 2011

EVALUATION

Page 24: GAME IT PROJECT

Evaluating my performance Investigation: I think that my most important stage was the Investigation, because that was when I did all my researching, observing and investigating skills about how games work, how to create games, etc. It’s my highest part of the process, because I investigated the different Areas of Interactions, the age group, etc.

Plan: Personally for the planning stage, there wasn’t much to do. Other than creating a gantt chart, planning the process of creating a game and taking note of each and every thing I did. So it was one of my weakest points. I wish I could’ve added in more detail so it would be more clearer.

Page 25: GAME IT PROJECT

Evaluating my performanceDesign: In this stage, it was important for me to know how to use the application “Scratch” properly. After playing around with Scratch for a couple of tries, I finally made three design that would definitely give me ideas for finalizing my final product. Learning over the queue cards on different rules and operations was extremely helpful, so that I can use those skills when creating my final game.

Create: My final design, turned out good. It wasn’t as good as I expected, and I wished I added in more levels and more varieties of adventures to do. The pro about it is that it’s educational, and my aim is for my games to be educational, but at the same time fun. I wish that I could’ve done a better design, so that it would be so much better, I’m not entirely pleased with it, but it’s okay.

Page 26: GAME IT PROJECT

Meeting SpecificationsMy specification was that my game had to be educational, appropriate and entertaining. My aim was to make sure the game includes educational points such as wordings, mathematical problems, quizzes, mazes, etc. I don’t want it to be too difficult and too challenging, since it’s meant for a younger age group, for example the grade 2’s. I think my game is pretty educational, although I know it might not be very entertaining, but at least it’s educational and easy to understand.

Page 27: GAME IT PROJECT

Peer Evaluation I think that the game is sort of simple, but at the same time it’s fun. I suggest adding more levels, and creating it more “complicating”, other than it’s entertaining, and I liked the way it was mathematical and had directions of where to go, and how to follow.-
